Malawi Police Service The Malawi Police Service is a government department under the Ministry of Homeland Security The Malawi Police Service serves from 34 Police Stations.

The Malawi Police Service is a government department under Ministry of Internal Affairs and Public Security. Historically the Service started as an organized Nyasaland Police Force on 5th October, 1921 It had its headquarters in Zomba, situated at the present Police College. Police stations were also established in Zomba, Blantyre, Mulanje and Mangochi The statement of common purpose and values emphasize the objects of the Malawi Police Service. It also clarifies how these objects shall be fulfilled by members of the Malawi Police Service. The Malawi Police Service is currently operating from Lilongwe district as its National Headquarters It has four Regional Headquarters which are Southern, Central, Eastern and Northern.

PREPARATIONS FOR 2026 INTER-SECURITY AGENCIES SPORTS FESTIVAL PROGRESSING WELL

Chairperson of the Joint Organising Committee, Colonel Alfred Matambo says preparations for the 2026 Inter-Security Agencies Sports Festival are progressing well.

The five-day festival, scheduled for 12 to 16 October 2026 at Bingu National Stadium, will bring together officers from the Malawi Defence Force, Malawi Police Service, Malawi Prisons Service and Department of Immigration.

The festival will feature various sporting disciplines, including football, netball, basketball, chess, tug of war, and many others.

Colonel Matambo says the festival will provide an opportunity for officers to interact, strengthen co-operation, and promote their overall well-being through sport.

He added that organisers had an initial budget of K212 million to successfully host the event and currently face a K41 million deficit.

The organising committee has, therefore, appealed to the corporate world and well-wishers for support.

The festival will be held under the theme: “Strength in Unity: Promoting Unity, Wellness, Teamwork and National Development through Sport.”

Five arrested over St. Lawrence Catholic Parish robbery.

Police in Blantyre have arrested five (5) suspects in connection to the robbery case that took place on 26th September, 2026 at the Parish Priest's house at St. Lawrence Nkoka Parish at Manase, Blantyre.

The suspects attacked the guards before breaking into the parish priest's house where they went away with a Samsung Smart TV, HP Laptop, Samsung A04 cell phone and Techno Spark 5 Air.

They also stole a Toyota Rav4 motor vehicle which was later recovered at Manje area where it was abandoned.

Meanwhile, Police have recovered a Samsung Galaxy A04 cellphone which has been positively identified by the owner.

The suspects have since been identified as Precious Chiwalo, aged 45 who hails from Mphapha Village, Traditional Authority Lundu in Chikwawa District, Chancy Mathewe, 27 years, from Gunda Village, Traditional Authority Nanseta in Thyolo District, Samuel Hussein ,22, from Katseche Village, Traditional Authority Lundu in Chikwawa District, Mike Makwinja, 32, Mwitere Village, Traditional Authority Chimaliro in Thyolo District and Petrol Sanena, 39, Kweluza Village, Traditional Authority Changata in Thyolo District.

The suspects will appear before court soon as investigations are still on going to recover the remaining stolen items.

Police remains committed to safeguarding public safety, protecting citizens' rights and maintaining peace and order across the region.

62 illegal muzzle loaders out of circulation

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has taken 62 illegal muzzle-loading fi****ms out of circulation in the Northern Region following their voluntary surrender during the Fi****ms Amnesty Month observed in September.

Of the 62 fi****ms surrendered, 58 were handed over in Rumphi district, while four were surrendered in Nkhata Bay district.

Police records indicate that muzzle loaders are commonly used for game poaching in National parks and Game reserves.

The African Union designates September each year as Amnesty Month. The initiative encourages civilians to voluntarily surrender illicit small arms, light weapons and am******on.

The Amnesty provides an opportunity for people to surrender illegal fi****ms without fear of arrest or prosecution. It is part of the broader efforts in reducing the circulation of illicit fi****ms and promoting safer communities across Africa.

The MPS commends all those who have voluntarily surrendered the fi****ms. Their action is a positive step towards making communities safer and protecting the country's wildlife.

The surrendered fi****ms are earmarked for destruction on July 9 next year, which is observed globally as the Gun Destruction Day.

The MPS also urges members of the public to report anyone suspected of possessing illegal fi****ms. The information provided by the public can help the MPS in preventing gun-related crimes and keeping the communities safe.

Blue Eagles secure K250 million Standard Bank sponsorship

Blue Eagles Football Club have secured a one-year sponsorship package worth 250 million kwacha with Standard Bank Malawi.

The sponsorship will support key areas of the club, including branded playing kits and team naming rights, among other activities.

Speaking at the official unveiling of the sponsorship at National Police headquarters, Area 30 in Lilongwe, Standard Bank Chief Executive Philip Madinga says the bank has chosen to support the Police-sponsored side because the club's values resonate with those of the bank.

Madinga says the sponsorship is also expected to motivate the team to improve its performance on the pitch.

As part of the agreement, Blue Eagles will be known as Standard Bank Blue Eagles FC throughout the one-year sponsorship period.

Meanwhile, in his acceptance speech, the Chief Guest who is also the club's patron and Inspector General of Police, Richard Luhanga, has hailed Standard Bank for the sponsorship.

Luhanga says the financial support will help ease the club's financial pressure during the season and beyond. He also urged the players to aim high and focus on winning the league.

On his part, Malawi National Council of Sports Board Chairperson Jim Kalua says proper investment is key to the development and success of sport in the country.

Kalua has also thanked Standard Bank for its continued support towards sports development in Malawi.

Police, MACRA collaborate in curbing technology-enabled crimes

The Malawi Police Service (MPS) and the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) have collaborated to combat growing use of digital platforms for fraud, impersonation, misinformation, disinformation and other cyber-related crimes.

Speaking during a joint engagement between the two institutions in Lilongwe, Inspector General of Police, Richard Luhanga said MPS is committed to combating crimes in the cyberspace.

Luhanga added that MACRA plays a key role in addressing digital crimes. "Mobile money fraud, disinformation, fake news and the incorrect use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) have caused a lot of problems in the digital space. The two institutions are crucial in working together towards curbing these crimes and making the digital and telecommunications space safe for everyone," emphasized Luhanga.

On his part, MACRA Board Chairperson's representative, Associate Professor Innocent Kafodya said MACRA's mandate to execute its duties is limited, hence the need to join hands with Police. "We believe that by engaging the Police Service, we will be able to combat cybercrimes, which are rampant because of the digitalization of services," said Kafodya.

Kafodya further said the collaboration will improve investigations, help trace perpetrators and bring cybercrime offenders to justice.

Meanwhile, MACRA Director General, Dr Mayamiko Nkoloma attributed some digital challenges to low levels of digital literacy, stressing the need for continuous public awareness on the responsible and safe use of digital platforms.

On 26 September, ONE NICO Pa Ground came to life at Bangwe Police Station, where NICO Holdings staff joined forces with the men and women of the Malawi Police Service to give the station a much-needed transformation.

The contribution, valued at approximately K45 million, included the repainting of the station’s interiors, including the cells, the replacement of electrical sockets and fittings, and the installation of 16 complete workstations, each comprising an office desk and chair. We also donated five desktop computers and a high-volume printer to support the station’s day-to-day operations.

The initiative was inspired by the spirit of Kuthandiza Otithandiza, recognising the important work done by those who serve and protect our communities, often with limited resources.

What made the day particularly meaningful was the spirit of partnership. The ONE NICO team worked alongside the Bangwe Police team throughout the exercise, with professional contractors handling the electrical work and providing technical guidance on the refurbishment. We worked together, shared ideas, solved problems and, at 11am, even broke bread over brunch.

That sense of togetherness is at the heart of ONE NICO Pa Ground, a Group-wide initiative through which we are taking our commitment beyond our businesses and into the communities we serve and where our customers live. It is our way of saying thank you for their continued support, while demonstrating our care for the communities that make our business possible.

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Richard Chakupaleza Chikoko Luhanga, says the previous situation in which the Msundwe Police Unit was attacked and destroyed by a mob should not be repeated.

Luhanga says mob justice is unlawful, urging people to report suspected offenders to the Police and allow the law to take its course.

He has assured people in Msundwe that the Malawi Police Service will deploy more than 70 police officers to the area to help maintain law and order.

Luhanga has also condemned corrupt practices, urging police officers and members of the community to reject corruption and uphold integrity.

He has further condemned sexual exploitation of underage children, su***de and irresponsible drinking, urging the community to refrain from such behaviours.

Speaking during the official handover of the keys to the building, the Board Chair for Creck Mr Gideon Kalumbu says they decided to support the construction of Msundwe Police Unit as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility, giving back to the community where they operate and conduct their business.

Kalumbu says security is paramount to the country’s development, adding that supporting the construction of the Msundwe Police Unit will contribute to a safer and more secure area.

The construction of the Police unit is pegged at 380 million kwacha.

The construction has been completed with support from Creck Hardware and General Suppliers.
