Under the motto “Divided by History, United by Choice”, the Embassy celebrated 36 years of German Unity 🇩🇪 at the Ambassador’s Residence, welcoming the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs George T. Chaponda, M.P. as Guest of Honour.

The Hon. Minister underlined that as value partners, Germany and Malawi 🇩🇪🇲🇼 share a deep and unwavering commitment to Multilateralism, to the rule of law ⚖️ and the purposes and principals of the UN Charta 🌍,

Invited guests cherished Germany’s ongoing support through Development Cooperation, which continue to make a big impact on the lives of many Malawians. 🇲🇼

The Ambassador made clear that Germany will continue to stand by Malawi’s side. 🤝

Discussing how to strengthen Cooperation between Malawi and Germany
Ambassador-designate to Germany, Dr Evans R. Matabwa visited his German opposite number, Ambassador Ute König in our embassy in Lilongwe before departing for Berlin.

They discussed development cooperation with regard to the upcoming government consultations in Lilongwe this month and exchanged views on fostering economic growth opportunities in agriculture, mining and tourism.

🌍 Think you know how big Africa is? Your world map may have misled you.

🗺️ The United Nations​ General Assembly has backed the African-led “Correct the Map” initiative — encouraging the use of equal-area maps, including the Equal Earth projection, when representing the relative size of continents.

🇩🇪 Germany was among the 164 countries that voted in favour of the resolution.

Why does that matter?

Many of the world maps we are most familiar with distort land area, making regions closer to the poles appear disproportionately large. Equal-area projections offer a more accurate picture of the relative size of continents — including Africa.

‼️ The initiative is about more than cartography. It is about representation, visibility, and seeing our world in its true proportions.

Democracy cannot be taken for granted. It must be safeguarded and practised anew every day.

Germany has experienced this first-hand throughout its history; its first democracy was established in 1919. However, it came to an end in 1933. This was followed by a period of dictatorship, war and the division of Germany, symbolised by the Berlin Wall. Places such as Niederkirchnerstrasse in Berlin serve as a reminder of this history.

In 1990, 36 years ago, reunification was achieved through free elections. This was driven by the peaceful revolution of the people in the GDR and made possible by international diplomacy.

Divided by history. United by choice.

Advancing the Rights and Dignity of Older Persons in Malawi

As the world commemorates the International Day for Older Persons under the theme “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives,” we celebrate older people and their contributions to society, while reaffirming the importance of dignity, inclusion and protection throughout the life course.

With a new grant from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through HelpAge Deutschland e. V., the Malawi Network Of Older Persons' Organizations (MANEPO) is supporting the implementation of Malawi’s Older Persons’ Act, 2024. ⚖️

The programme will strengthen access to justice for older persons and improved complaint-handling services, increase awareness of their rights, and support older persons to participate in decisions that affect their lives.

This initiative builds on Germany’s continued support to MANEPO since 2023, including efforts to improve access to age-friendly health services for older people. 🏥

As part of the programme's launch, Andrew Kavla, Human Rights Commissioner and Executive Director MANEPO together with HelpAge Deutschland's Dr. Jürgen Focke paid a courtesy visit to the German Embassy. 🇩🇪🤝🇲🇼

Together, we are working towards a Malawi where all older persons are heard, respected, protected and able to live with dignity. ❤️

Health starts with knowledge, access, dignity and choice. 📚🚰✨🗳️

It starts with a girl who understands her body. 👧🏽❤️ - It starts with a boy who knows how to support his peers. 👦🏽🤝

We end this where health often starts or stalls: with a period, and whether a girl has what she needs to manage it with dignity.

For many schoolgirls in Malawi, that's not a given. Without access to safe menstrual hygiene materials, and surrounded by stigma instead of straight answers, periods can mean missed classes and lost confidence.

For every girl, understanding menstruation and accessing safe menstrual hygiene materials is key to health and well-being. 🩸🧼

🤝Together with CARVE Africa, the GIZ Malawi German Health Programme helps building a future where periods are understood, supported, and free from stigma. ♻️🩹💬

This project has reached out to 44 communities and 2800 young girls in school with Menstrual Health and Hygiene messages. Alongside the education work, Banja La Mtsogolo and the Family Planning Association of Malawi have provided youth-friendly SRHR services during outreach services.

It's a fitting place to close with proof that when young people get real information and real support, health really does start here.

Through the N’zatonse Project, a consortium led by PSI International is bringing essential sexual and reproductive health services 🩺 closer to communities through mobile outreach 🚐 — including to people living in hard-to-reach areas.

As we mark , we’re reminded that bringing services closer to people can make a real difference. Because — with access to information and services that leave no one behind.

Health starts with being heard 👂

Mary did everything she could to access care. She walked three kilometres to the clinic and waited her turn, even as others paid to skip ahead of her. When she reached the front, she reported being asked to buy a mask and a health passport she could not afford, and was given a prescription for medicine that was not available at the facility.
She left and decided not to return.

Mary's experience highlights some of the challenges patients can face when seeking care. A recent Patient Satisfaction Survey set out to better understand these experiences across health facilities and to measure patients’ satisfaction with SRHR services.

Supported by GIZ Malawi's German Health Programme and Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES), the survey included 665 patient exit interviews, 53 in-depth interviews and 40 mystery patient visits across 40 health facilities in four districts. Only 27% of respondents reported being unreservedly satisfied with the care they received.

Reaching a health facility is an important first step. What happens once patients arrive—whether they feel 👂heard, 💬 informed, 🔐respected and safe—can also shape their experience of care and their willingness to return. Young people and other vulnerable groups require deliberate attention.

Behind every health facility are health workers doing demanding and essential work every day—often under significant pressure and with limited resources. Their dedication, compassion and commitment to serve their communities are central to strengthening the quality and experience of care. The survey findings are now helping health workers, facility teams and district managers identify areas for improvement and strengthen the patient experience.

Access opens the door. A positive experience can help keep it open.
