𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠?

At the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), we are reading the 2026 Perceptions of Electoral Integrity (PEI) Report an independent global assessment of election quality which shows that Malawi is among the countries that recorded the most notable improvements in electoral integrity following the 2025 General Election. Malawi's PEI score increased from 59 in 2025 to 69 in 2026, placing it alongside the Philippines, Poland, Gabon and Egypt as the countries that made the biggest gains compared to their previous elections.

The Perceptions of Electoral Integrity (PEI) is one of the world's most respected measures of election quality. Produced by the Electoral Integrity Project (EIP), the index is based on assessments by independent election experts who evaluate every stage of the electoral cycle from the legal framework and voter registration to campaigning, polling, vote counting, results management and the performance of electoral management bodies. Their assessments are aggregated into an overall score ranging from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating greater electoral integrity.

No election is perfect, and there is always room for improvement. However, independent assessments such as the PEI provide an opportunity to reflect on progress, identify areas requiring attention and benchmark performance against international standards. The report's findings are therefore encouraging, not only for the Malawi Electoral Commission but also for all stakeholders who contributed to the successful conduct of the 2025 General Election.

Definitely NOT a MEC Constituency or National Tally Centre!

Nice try... but counting ballots does not require people to be "spirited."

For the record, before a venue is designated as a tally centre, it must meet several requirements. It must be secure for the safe custody of election materials, have permanent structures, be easily accessible from all parts of the constituency, and have reliable mobile phone network coverage to facilitate the transmission of results. Preference is also given to public facilities such as schools, Teacher Development Centres, community halls, social halls, and government or local authority offices.

Equally important, a Constituency Tally Centre cannot be established in military units, police stations, residential buildings, political party premises, hospitals or health centres, places of worship, or premises where alcoholic drinks are ordinarily sold or consumed.

We'll stick to counting ballots, not shots—because every ballot counts.
