We're back!

The World Cup is back. So is Norway.
Later tonight, the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off. For the first time since 1998, Norway has qualified. The Embassy will be cheering our national team on every step of the way, and we hope all of Malawi does as well.

Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard are names that excite any football fan. But the strength of Norwegian football runs deeper than its stars. It is built on local clubs, dedicated volunteers, and a belief that the pitch should be open to everyone. Football serves as a meeting place where people of all backgrounds come together as teammates and members of the same community. It is this spirit of inclusion and collective effort that lays the foundation for success.

Today, Norway and Malawi marked an important step forward in our long-standing partnership in the energy sector, with the signing of a new cooperation agreement between the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate and Malawi’s Department of Water Resources.

Through this collaboration, we aim to strengthen institutions, improve water resource management, and support sustainable and climate-resilient energy development.

Reliable energy and responsible management of natural resources are key to economic growth, job creation, and better livelihoods.

As global aid budgets tighten, partnerships like this become even more important. Long-term institutional cooperation helps build lasting capacity, strengthen national ownership, and deliver sustainable results over time.

We are proud to support Malawi in building strong institutions and delivering results that benefit its people.

Welcoming partners advancing environmental cooperation 🇳🇴🤝🇲🇼

We are pleased to welcome Henrik Lunden, Senior Advisor at Norad, and Frank Eklo, Programme Director at the Norwegian Environment Agency, to Malawi this week.

Their visit comes at an important moment in Norway’s cooperation with Malawi in the environment and energy sectors, including upcoming events linked to the Energy for Development (EfD) initiative and the signing of new agreements with Malawian partners.

Through initiatives like EfD, Norway supports Malawi in strengthening institutions, building expertise, and promoting evidence-based policymaking for sustainable management of natural resources and energy systems.

We look forward to engaging discussions and important milestones in the days ahead!

Stay tuned as we share more from the upcoming launch and signing events.

This week, Ambassador Anne Sofie Bjelland had the honour of presenting her Letters of Credence to His Excellency Mr Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia, at State House in Lusaka.

Norway and Zambia enjoy longstanding and friendly relations, built on mutual respect, shared international engagement and a common interest in peace, sustainable development and democratic values.

Ambassador Bjelland also had a constructive meeting with Permanent Secretary Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen at Zambia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, where they discussed Norway-Zambia relations and opportunities for continued dialogue and cooperation.

As Norway’s Ambassador to Zambia, side-accredited from Lilongwe, Ambassador Bjelland looks forward to strengthening the dialogue with Zambia and continuing cooperation in areas of common interest, including climate action, green economic development, investment, regional stability and multilateral cooperation.

Together for a Period Friendly World.

On World Menstrual Hygiene Day, the Embassy joins the global call to ensure that no girl or woman is held back by her period. Menstrual health is not only a matter of hygiene; it is a human rights issue, central to dignity, equality, and opportunity.

Norway has long championed sexual and reproductive health and rights worldwide, including efforts to break the silence, stigma, and barriers around menstruation. Through global partnerships Norway works to ensure access to accurate information, safe menstrual products, and adequate sanitation for all.

These efforts contribute, directly and indirectly, to improving school attendance, safeguarding girls’ health, and empowering women and girls to fully participate in society. When girls can manage their periods safely and with dignity, they are more likely to stay in school, complete their education, and pursue opportunities that uplift their communities.

A period-friendly world is one where menstruation is normalised, resources are accessible, and every girl and woman can thrive. Together, let us continue to break taboos and advance equality.

Norway steps up as Ebola spreads.

Norway has contributed USD 5.4 million to WHO's Health Contingencies Fund, following an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

A fund that can respond immediately, before a situation escalates, is one of the most important tools the global health community has. Norway is the largest contributor, covering over 46% of the fund's financing in 2025.

Health authorities are working together to ensure the outbreak is under control. Norway is proud to support that effort, and to play its part in keeping communities across Africa healthy and safe.

Norway's Constitution Day is a special occasion for Norwegians all around the world.

On 17 May 1814, Norway adopted its Constitution, a moment Norwegians have celebrated ever since, with children's parades, flags, and national costumes.

The Constitution remains one of the world's oldest written constitutions still in use today. It continues to serve as the foundation for Norwegian democracy.

In Lilongwe, the Embassy joined Norwegians and friends of Norway for a joyful celebration.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our National Day celebration!

The evening brought together hundreds of friends and partners from across government, civil society, the private sector, the international community and the media. A special thank you to our Guest of Honour, Hon. Minister of Defence Feston Kaupa, for joining us in the celebrations.

In her speech, Ambassador Bjelland reflected on the values at the core of every May 17th: freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. Values shared by Norway and Malawi, and increasingly important to reaffirm as they face growing pressure around the world.

Hon. Minister Kaupa delivered a warm address highlighting the deep and enduring partnership between Malawi and Norway. He expressed heartfelt gratitude for Norway's steadfast support over the years.

Thank you all for making it a memorable evening. Here's to continued friendship between Norway and Malawi!

This week, the Embassy is pleased to welcome Satu Santala, Managing Director of the Nordic Development Fund (NDF), to Malawi.

NDF is a Nordic climate and development finance institution. More than 60% of its portfolio is invested in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Today’s programme included a visit to Green Impact Technologies, a youth-led Malawian start-up turning market food waste into biogas and organic fertiliser. The initiative creates opportunities for women and young people, and has reached more than 2,000 farmers through partnerships with agro-dealers.

Ambassador Bjelland praised the project as a strong example of renewable energy, entrepreneurship and local capacity working together in practice. She underlined Norway’s commitment to partnerships that bring together the private sector, development finance and local expertise for lasting impact.
