Office of the Director of Public Officers' Declarations-ODPOD Promoting Public Confidence in the Public Service

The Office of the Director of Public Officers Declaration says 95 percent of political and elected public officers who took office after the 2025 elections have submitted their asset declarations.

The development follows the expiry of the three-month deadline set for public officers to declare their assets.

In an interview with MIJ Online Tiyamike Phiri, Spokesperson for the Office said the institution is verifying the submitted declarations to ensure accuracy, while strengthening compliance through improved monitoring and communication systems.

Phiri said office is also working with other oversight bodies to verify submissions.

Today marks another milestone in strengthening public service delivery and accountability.

GIZ has generously donated a heavy-duty photocopier to the Office of the Director of Public Officers Declarations (ODPOD). The donation was officially received on behalf of the Director of ODPOD by Mr. Justice Nyirongo, Principal Declarations Officer for Policy and Planning.

The machine will greatly support the printing and photocopying of declarations documents, improving efficiency in the office’s day-to-day operations.

GIZ continues to be a valued and long-standing development partner to ODPOD, supporting efforts to enhance efficiency and transparency in public service operations.

April 1st marks the official opening of the Declaration Period, running through to April 30th—a time dedicated to reinforcing accountability and transparency in public service.

Throughout this period, all listed public officers are expected to declare their assets, liabilities and business interests fully and accurately. This process plays a critical role in promoting integrity, preventing conflicts of interest, and strengthening confidence in public institutions.

ODPOD therefore strongly urge all concerned officers to comply within the stipulated timeframe and submit their declarations on or before 30th April. Your cooperation ensures a more trustworthy and credible public service for all.

The Office of the Director of Public Officers’ Declarations has successfully concluded a series of Asset Declarations orientation workshops for staff of the Reserve Bank of Malawi across all its three branches — Lilongwe, Blantyre, and Mzuzu.

The workshops formed part of the Office’s ongoing awareness drive aimed at strengthening compliance with asset declaration requirements and promoting a culture of transparency and accountability among public officers.

Throughout the sessions, staff were guided on the legal framework, declaration processes, and the importance of timely and accurate submissions.

The interactive engagements provided an opportunity for participants to seek clarification and deepen their understanding of their obligations.

Public officers are reminded that the declaration period runs from 1 April to 30 April every year, and all required submissions should be made within this time frame.

The Office commends the Reserve Bank of Malawi for its commitment and cooperation, which contributed to the success of the nationwide orientation programme.

As part of its efforts to strengthen media relations, the Office of the Director of Public Officers’ Declarations (ODPOD) engaged investigative journalists from various media houses across Malawi.

The meeting organised by Continued Journalism Education (CJE) with funding from International Centre for Asset Recovery (ICAR) focused on enhancing collaboration in the fight against corruption.

The discussion centred on how the media and the Directorate can continue building a strong working relationship that promotes transparency, accountability, and responsible investigative reporting.

ODPOD highlighted the role of public officers’ asset declarations in promoting integrity in public service while the journalists showed keen interest to learn more about how they can access information from the Directorate.

Both sides emphasised the importance of access to credible information, ethical reporting, and continued dialogue to ensure that investigative journalism contributes meaningfully to exposing corruption and promoting good governance in Malawi.

The meeting marks a step forward in fostering cooperation between governance institutions and the media, recognizing that a free and responsible press remains a key partner in safeguarding public resources and strengthening democratic accountability.

The Office of the Director of Public Officers’ Declarations (ODPOD) has intensified its Asset Declarations awareness drive, engaging members of staff at the Reserve Bank of Malawi in Blantyre.

The engagement follows successful sessions with the Bank’s Lilongwe Office and forms part of a nationwide initiative aimed at strengthening understanding of asset declaration requirements among public officers ahead of the April declaration period.

The awareness sessions are designed to promote transparency, accountability, and compliance with the country’s asset declaration framework.

The Blantyre meeting provided staff with an opportunity to appreciate the importance of timely and accurate asset declarations, while also addressing questions and clarifications on the process.

The awareness drive will conclude with a final session for Reserve Bank staff in Mzuzu, reinforcing the Office’s commitment to ensuring that public officers across Malawi are well-informed and compliant.

The Office of the Director of Public Officers Declarations ODPOD is orienting Listed Public Officers (LPOs) of the Reserve Bank of Malawi across the country on Asset Declarations regime and compliance ahead of the official declarations period scheduled from 1 April to 30 April.

The orientations which form part of ongoing efforts to strengthen compliance and promote ethical standards within public institutions are equipping the banks employees with a clear understanding of their legal obligations and the procedures involved in declaring assets, liabilities and business interests in line the declarations law,

Opening the first session in Lilongwe on Monday, Reserve Bank of Malawi General Counsel and Bank Secretary Mr. George Chioza, said the partnership between ODPOD and the Bank plays a critical role in strengthening the Banks governance culture and reinforcing its collective commitment to transparency and integrity.

ODPOD Director Mr. Micheal Chiusiwa said the participants are guided through the declaration process, highlighting key requirements, timelines and common errors to avoid.

By engaging the central bank’s workforce ahead of the declarations period, the ODPOD seeks to foster a culture of openness and reinforce the importance of timely and accurate submissions between 1 and 30 April each year.

Our Monday morning was filled with warm engagement and laughter as the Member of Parliament for Mulanje West, Hon. Patricia Kaliyati, visited ODPOD to personally submit her completed declaration form, in compliance with the Declarations of Assets, Liabilities and Business Interests law.

📌 Reminder: All Members of Parliament sworn in on 27th and 28th October have 9 days remaining until the 28 January deadline to declare their assets, liabilities, and business interests.

They are required to declare their assets, liabilities and business interests, and submit the information to the Director of Public Officers’ Declarations no later than three months after taking Oath of Office.

As the Civil Service winds down for the festive holidays, the Office of the Director of Public Officers’ Declarations (ODPOD) brought staff together in Lilongwe for an HIV / AIDS and Team Building Workshop.

The workshop focused on Ending AIDS as a public health threat, equipping officers with knowledge to promote prevention, care, and support both in the workplace and at home with Dr Anthony Chafunya as a lead facilitator.

There were also sessions on managing stress and depression which encouraged staff to prioritise mental well-being, especially during demanding work periods, while gender mainstreaming discussions reinforced the importance of equality and inclusion in public service delivery.

In line with ODPOD’s mandate, the workshop also addressed ethics and integrity with officials from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) highlighting the Directorates role in maintaining professional and personal ethics and preventing corruption in general.

Participants were further updated on the activities of the Institutional Integrity Committee, strengthening collective responsibility for accountability and good governance.

All in all, the workshop provided a valuable space for learning, reflection, and team bonding as ODPOD staff prepare to enter the year 2026 renewed, informed, and committed to integrity, health, and professionalism in public service.

The Office of the Director of Public Officers’ Declarations (ODPOD) has received a donation of network infrastructure equipment from its cooperating partner, GIZ.

The equipment will enhance ODPOD’s network capacity and reliability, thereby improving connectivity for key institutional systems, including the Online Declarations System currently under development, the Records Management System, and other operations that depend on the Local Area Network (LAN) and internet connectivity.

The equipment includes Cisco network switches (48-port, 24-port, and 16-port), a FortiGate 90G firewall with Unified Threat Protection (UTP), Cisco SFP modules, wireless access points with protective cages, CAT 6 cabling (305 meters), and a data cabinet.

Speaking during the handover, ODPOD's Deputy Director, Mr. Beyani Munthali, noted that the enhanced connectivity will enable ODPOD to finalize the Online Declarations System and streamline internal processes, thereby strengthening efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance in law enforcement.

“We are grateful to GIZ through the Strengthening Public and Economic Management PFEM-Tikuze Malawi Project for its continued partnership and Commitment to good governance”. He added.
