During the second day of the National Youth Symposium on Public Debt, young people presented the Youth Position Paper on Public Debt to the Government, development partners and civil society organizations. Developed by young people from across Malawi, the paper puts forward seven concrete recommendations and calls on the institutions present—including the European Union—to provide a response within the next 30 days.

The EU-Malawi Youth Sounding Board (EU-YSB) contributed to the organization of the event through its representatives Lonjezo Emmanuel Sibweza, Bernadette Mponda Twambilire Gondwe and Martin Nsondole

Receiving the Youth Position Paper on behalf of the European Union, Chargé d'Affaires, Else Boonstra, highlighted that public debt is not just an issue for experts—it affects every citizen, especially young people who will inherit the consequences of today's decisions. Hope is growing in the rice and soybean fields of Salima District.

Farmers from Thembwe and Funde Soya and Rice Cooperatives are preparing for the upcoming harvest season under the Ulimi ndi Chilengedwe m’Malawi (UCHI) Strengthening Agricultural Commercialisation Project.

Through post-harvest management trainings, improved farming practices, women’s participation, and strengthened farmer cooperatives, communities are gaining the skills and confidence needed to transition from subsistence farming to commercial agriculture.

At Funde Cooperative alone, 20 lead farmers are supporting 401 farmers through knowledge sharing and practical agricultural guidance.

The project is also promoting women’s leadership in agriculture while integrating nutrition education and financial inclusion support to strengthen resilience and improve livelihoods.

UCHI is a five-year agricultural and food systems project in Malawi, funded by the European Union in Malawi and implemented by UNDP Malawi in partnership with Malawi Government.

The EU Youth Sounding Board in Malawi is proud to support the first ever National Youth Symposium on Debt Transparency and Management, a youth-led event focused on strengthening meaningful youth participation in fiscal governance, public debt accountability, and policy engagement.

Join us for an Erasmus+ Information Session for Malawi to learn about the opportunities offered by the Erasmus+ programme.

The session will take place at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) in Lilongwe, Malawi. It will also be accessible online for those who cannot make it in person.

Speakers include topic specialists from the European Commission and Erasmus National Focal Points, plus testimonials from local organisations that have already benefited from the Erasmus+ programme.

The EU Youth Sounding Board (YSB) Malawi has officially begun its field advisory journey, supporting two flagship EU-funded initiatives: the BOMA LATHU Programme and the UCHI Project.

Working alongside implementing partners, YSB members helped strengthen Civic Education Hubs, advocated for greater youth representation in local governance, and participated in due diligence assessments of Farmer Organizations to better understand how to increase youth participation in commercial agriculture.

The impact was immediate. In some districts like Nkhata Bay, YSB advocacy resulted in the election of a young person as Hub Secretary, while in Karonga, the Board successfully championed the inclusion of the District Gender Affairs Department in the District Civic Education Hub—strengthening gender equality and inclusive decision-making.
