Yesterday, the EU Head of Cooperation, Mr George Dura, joined representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Blantyre and Lilongwe City Councils, CEPA and Waste Advisors, academic and other partners, including farmers at the POSSIBLE (Promoting Organic Systems of Soil Improvement to Build a Lasting Economy) Research Dissemination Workshop.

As the POSSIBLE project nears completion in July 2026, it has already generated valuable evidence on soil health, organic inputs and sustainable agriculture through practical research under real farming conditions in Blantyre and Lilongwe. The project’s results can continue to inform policy deliberations and frameworks in Malawi on soil health, sustainable agriculture and resilient food systems.

The European Union is proud to support partnerships that help turn research into dialogue, and dialogue into lasting impact, while contributing to broader EU support for food systems transformation in Malawi through upcoming EU programmes like Agri-catalyst, which will focus on the rice, soy-bean and coffee value chains.

The European Union, represented by the Head of Cooperation, Mr George Dura, together with the Malawi Government, World Food Programme Malawi, and other partners, held the final Steering Committee meeting for the EU-funded Tsogolo la Thanzi (TSOLATA II) – Healthy Future School Meals Programme.

Over the past three years, TSOLATA II has provided nutritious school meals to more than 440,000 primary school learners and over 17,000 pre-primary children across seven districts in Malawi. At the same time, the programme has created market opportunities for around 20,000 smallholder farmers, demonstrating how school feeding can improve education, nutrition, and rural livelihoods together.

As the programme enters its final phase, discussions focused on how to sustain these achievements beyond donor support. Strong Government and community ownership, sustainable financing, and closer collaboration across the education, agriculture, health, gender, and finance sectors will be essential to support Malawi's ambition of expanding home-grown school feeding nationwide.

The European Union remains committed to working with the Government of Malawi and partners to strengthen education systems, improve children's nutrition, and support sustainable development for communities across the country.

Ambassador Daniel Aristi had the pleasure of welcoming back from Brussels and engaging with Ms. Amina Tshephang Alidi, the first-ever Malawian Sakharov Fellow; a youth advocate, and community development practitioner whose work bridges grassroots realities with national and global human rights spaces.

A previous member of the EU Youth Sounding Board in Malawi, Amina has spent the past years championing gender equality, meaningful youth participation, and community-driven development through evidence-based advocacy and inclusive leadership.

The European Parliament's Sakharov Fellowship offers up to 14 human rights defenders selected from non-EU countries the opportunity to follow a two-week intensive training in Brussels and at another location in an EU Member State. The empowering programme for human rights defenders has been organised annually since 2016 further to an initiative taken by the Sakharov Prize Community at the 25th Anniversary Conference of the Sakharov Prize.
