Yesterday, the EU attended the Social Protection for Gender Empowerment and Resilience (SP-GEAR) coordination meeting. The meeting brought together several MDAs and District Councils involved in the implementation of the programme. Speaking at the meeting, the EU Head of Cooperation Mr George Dura thanked Government for their leadership and ownership of the programme through the last two and a half years.

He urged GoM, CSOs and UNICEF to fast-track the remaining project activities and ensure sustainability through a seamless integration of the social protection frameworks piloted by SP GEAR into the institutional integration into GoM strategies, District Development Plans and CDF district plans. “We commend the Government of Malawi's commitment to ensuring that key milestones such as the Cash+ approach, social service linkages, the SCTP redesign, the SP Financing Strategy, the HGRM architecture, and public expenditure tracking are permanently embedded within national budgets, policies, and plans." Mr Dura concluded.

As the Programme enters the final six months, the EU and Ireland in Malawi remain deeply committed to collaborating with all partners to consolidate our gains, secure a responsible exit and ensure a lasting legacy for social protection and women’s economic empowerment in Malawi.

EU allocates €15 million in humanitarian assistance in response to Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda

The funding aims at supporting emergency operations in the affected areas as well as preparedness and prevention efforts. Safeguarding public health remains the Commission’s absolute priority as diseases do not stop at borders and cooperation is essential.

The exchanges served to discuss the different priorities of the Ministry and the collaboration that the EU has been and will continue providing. Gender and equality are key pillars of the European Union's external action globally, permeating all its programs and activities, and the EU will continue supporting the Ministry's efforts. Today, Ambassador Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi met with Ms Bertha Bangara Chikadza, President of the Economics Association of Malawi - ECAMA and her team. This was an opportunity to better understand the economic dynamics at play in Malawi, notably regarding the current challenges stemming from the situation in the Middle East in the shape of higher fuel and fertiliser prices. We really appreciate Ecama’s insights and look forward to continuing the dialogue.

On 01 June, H.E. Ambassador Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi met with the Minister of Natural Resources, Hon. Patricia Wiskes, MP, in a courtesy visit. A very useful and interesting conversation where both parties exchanged about the environmental difficulties and opportunities in Malawi, notably addressing deforestation, as well as the challenges posed by climate change.

The European Union remains a central partner of Malawi in those domains, including through its flagship programme Ulimi ndi Chilengedwe (UCHI). The EU support aims to restore degraded landscapes, foster sustainable land-use planning and land registration and contribute to improved forest management and agricultural productivity”.

UN peace operations remain one of the most important multilateral instruments for responding to a broadening range of threats. They remain among the most impactful multilateral instruments for sustaining peace and security – by protecting civilians, preventing escalation of violence, or ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches the most vulnerable.

The EU and its Member States deploy around 4,000 military, police, and civilian personnel to UN peace operations. The EU is also a security provider with 21 ongoing civilian and military missions and operations around the world, working hand-in-hand with the UN on the ground.

Today, we pay a special tribute to Malawian peacekeepers who continue to serve with professionalism and commitment in UN peacekeeping missions. Through their contribution to global peace and security, they make Malawi proud.

On the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, we recognise and appreciate the dedication, courage, and service of peacekeepers working in some of the world’s most challenging environments.

On Africa Day, we commemorate the foundation of the African Union and celebrate the people and culture of African countries.

The theme for 2026 is Unity, Integration, and Development, topics that resonate strongly with the European Union own ethos.

As partners, as a “union of Unions”, the AU and the EU continue to deepen their cooperation in a plethora of domains, from the collaboration between the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) and the European Parliament (EP) to continent-binding infrastructure and digital projects through the Global Gateway strategy.

Sky’s the limit: in March this year, the 2nd EU–AU Space Dialogue took place, where the Unions discussed cooperation in the space sector, as both sides recognise the value of space-based services in addressing global challenges, from climate monitoring to food security.

Today, more than ever, we reaffirm our shared commitment to working together to support peace, inclusive growth, and resilience through long-term dependable partnerships that create opportunities and improve lives for present and future generations.
