COSOMA RECEIVES TWO NATIONAL AWARDS FOR ACCESS TO INFORMATION AND INSTITUTIONAL EXCELLENCE IN PROCUREMENT

The Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA) has received two national recognitions for institutional excellence, reinforcing its commitment to transparency, accountability, good governance and effective service delivery.

COSOMA was recognised by the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) as an Access to Information Better Performing Institution for 2026. The award was presented during the Media and Access to Information (ATI) Awards held in Lilongwe on Monday, 28 September 2026. The recognition highlights COSOMA’s continued commitment to promoting access to information, transparency and responsiveness in its engagement with members, stakeholders and the general public.

Adding to this achievement, COSOMA received the Good Procurement Practices Award from the Malawi Institute of Procurement and Supply (MIPS) during the MIPS Annual Conference, held in Mangochi on 1 October 2026. The MIPS recognition acknowledges COSOMA’s commitment to strengthening procurement practices, promoting compliance and professionalism, and ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.

The two awards represent important milestones in COSOMA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional systems and uphold high standards of governance and public service. COSOMA extends its appreciation to MHRC and MIPS for the recognition and commends the Board, Management and staff for their continued commitment, professionalism and collective contribution to these achievements.

As COSOMA continues to serve and support Malawi’s creative sector, the Society remains committed to transparency, accountability, integrity and excellence in service delivery.

COSOMA PARTICIPATES IN TOURISM PARADE

Today, COSOMA joined other stakeholders in the Tourism Parade, celebrating Malawi’s rich cultural heritage, creativity and the vibrant potential of the country’s creative and tourism sectors.

The parade provided an opportunity for COSOMA to showcase its commitment to protecting, promoting and supporting Malawi’s creative works and the creators behind them.

From music and dance to visual arts, literature, film and other forms of creative expression, Malawi’s cultural identity is strengthened by the talent and creativity of its people. COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT: COURT IMPOSES MK2.5 MILLION FINE

The Blantyre Magistrate’s Court, before His Worship Mchilima, Senior Resident Magistrate, has convicted Winston Makawa, 46, of Ntcheu, on his own plea of guilty to four copyright-related offences under the Malawi Copyright Act, 2016.

The offences were:
1. Possession of infringing copies of works other than for private or domestic use, contrary to Section 113(a)
2. Possession of machinery with intent to use such devices to produce infringing copies, contrary to Section 113(b)
3. Reproduction of protected works without a valid transfer of rights or authorisation, contrary to Section 88(1)(a)
4. Distribution of infringing copies of works, contrary to Section 88(1)(b)

The court imposed a total fine of MK2.5 million, with prison terms ranging from 12 to 18 months IHL for each count in default of payment. The court further ordered the confiscation of the machinery used in the commission of the offences.

Mr. Makawa, who was reproducing and distributing infringing books, has so far paid the fine to the court.

MRA Engages Creative Artists on Tax Obligations

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has held a stakeholder engagement meeting with creative artists at Lilongwe Hotel to discuss tax obligations within Malawi’s creative industry.

MRA emphasized that the engagement was not about introducing new taxes but rather about providing information, clarifying existing tax requirements, and strengthening understanding between the authority and stakeholders in the creative sector.

Key issues discussed included the formalisation of the creative sector, applicable tax schedules, and relevant tax obligations for different areas of the creative industry.

The meeting brought together stakeholders from across the creative sector, including government institutions such as the Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA), the Copyright and Intellectual Property Rights Centre (CRIPC), and the Department of Arts, as well as rights-holder associations, including the Musicians Union of Malawi (MUM), the Visual Artists Association of Malawi (VAAM), and other sector representatives.

The engagement provided an important platform for dialogue, awareness, and collaboration towards a more informed and formalized creative industry in Malawi.

Creative sector stakeholders have also called for continued engagement and information-sharing on the tax regime applicable to the creative industry to promote greater understanding and compliance.
