The Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) and the GIZ Public Finance and Economic Management Programme (PFEM), are strengthening public outreach and awareness efforts to help combat financial crimes in Malawi.

As part of these efforts, GIZ, with support from the German Development Cooperation and the European Union, has provided Public Address (PA) System to help FIA expand its community mobilisation initiatives and stakeholder engagement activities.

FIA Acting Director General Vincent Chipeta emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration and continued partnership with GIZ:

“The support is not just for PR efforts, but it also enhances our training and compliance efforts, and capacity to effectively reach stakeholders with critical information on financial crime prevention.”

GIZ Anti-Corruption Component Lead John Anthony highlighted the role of public participation in protecting Malawi’s economy:

“FIA plays a critical role in safeguarding the integrity and functionality of Malawi’s financial system. By supporting public outreach initiatives, we hope to encourage greater citizen involvement and collective action in the fight against financial crimes.”

FIA is Malawi’s agency responsible for receiving, analyzing, and disseminating financial intelligence to combat money laundering, terrorism financing, and related financial crimes. Strengthening public understanding of these issues is essential in promoting transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in safeguarding the country’s financial system.

GIZ PFEM continues to work closely with oversight, financial, and law enforcement institutions to strengthen transparency, accountability, and effective public service delivery in Malawi.

The Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) has today joined students and stakeholders at the University of Malawi for a symposium hosted by the Law Enforcement Society, in an engagement aimed at shaping the next generation of professionals.

The symposium has brought together aspiring law enforcement practitioners for insightful discussions on integrity, accountability, and the evolving landscape of crime prevention.

FIA’s Director of Compliance and Prevention, Mrs. Anita Mankhambo who is also the guest of honor at the event has emphasized that law enforcement is not just a career, but a calling that demands honesty, resilience, and a strong sense of responsibility.

She has also encouraged the students to remain steadfast in their values, even in the face of challenges and temptations that may arise in the line of duty.

On her part, Head of Department of the Law Enforcement programme, Dr. Tiyesere Chikapa echoed Mankhambo’s sentiments saying the knowledge gained by the students is nothing without integrity.

And President for the Law Enforcement Society, Stacey Phiri said they symposium has offered them a platform to understand industry needs and to think beyond the ordinary.

The theme for the symposium is “Tackling crime in the 21st century: Strategies and Solutions.”

The Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) has been recognised on the implementation of beneficial ownership transparency in Africa.

The recognition was conferred by the Africa Beneficial Ownership Transparency (AfBOT) Network at a regional workshop on Beneficial Ownership organised in Cape Town, South Africa.

The event aimed at providing opportunities for member countries and international partners to continue discussing on progress, opportunities, and challenges in implementation of beneficial ownership reforms across the region.

On his part, Africa Development Bank (AfDB) Director, Mr. Abdoulaye Coulibaly, said collaboration amongst members of the network will help in building a robust system since the network is growing.

The award was received by the FIA’s Senior Compliance Analyst, Mr. Brighton Msiska, who attended the workshop.
