The arrival of a MK141 million tractor and implements at Kalikutupe Producers and Marketing Cooperative, in the area of Traditional Authority Kaluluma in Kasungu, marks a turning point for local farmers.

For Ivy Chisi, a longtime member of the group, this mechanisation means expanding her farming area from 2 hectares to 6 hectares, a development that will significantly boost her harvests and farm income. She believes that increased production and earnings will help transform her socio-economic life.

This transformation extends to the 751 other members of the cooperative, who will also expand their farming areas as the tractor replaces the strenuous hoe cultivation.

The soybean producing cooperative is receiving a MK280 million matching grant from AGCOM 2, part of which will also be used to finance the construction of a modern warehouse.

This investment will strengthen storage capacity, improve market access, and enhance the overall sustainability of the cooperative.

"By easing labour demands and increasing land under production, this mechanisation is set to open new opportunities for farming households and strengthen the socio-economic development of this community," says Steven Nyirenda, vice chairperson of the cooperative.

Officials from the World Bank, the Multi-Donor Trust Fund, the Ministries of Agriculture and Finance and other stakeholders on Tuesday visited the Lilongwe-based 59-member Hortspice Cooperative as part of the ongoing AGCOM 2 Program mission.

Hortspice Cooperative specializes in growing and processing spices such as ginger, turmeric, garlic, and chia seeds.

Daniel Kalunga, chairperson of the cooperative, says the group received a matching grant from AGCOM Program, which was used to construct a factory and procure processing machine, farming equipment including boom sprayers and mini tractors, to boost production.

During the tour, Pearson Soko, Director of Agriculture Extension Services in the Ministry of Agriculture, commended the farmers for their contribution to the realization of MW2063 Vision through commercialization and the establishment of a factory within their community. He noted that the cooperative’s achievements demonstrate the possibilities farmers can unlock with strategic support from Government and its partners.

Speaking on behalf of the donors, Ortega Aparicio Alvaro from the European Union expressed pride in seeing the tangible results of the AGCOM Program.

While acknowledging the challenges faced by the farmers, Alvaro commended their efforts in commercialization and market expansion, both locally and internationally.

He further encouraged the cooperative to continue investing whenever new market opportunities arise.

The 51-member Goliati Public Service Pensioners Association (PUPESA) is set to transform into a cooperative and begin enjoying its benefits, following a Cooperative Member Education Training currently underway at Goliati TDC in Thyolo, with support from the AGCOM 2 program.

Chairperson of the group, Steven Phiri, noted that they have been missing out on many opportunities by not being a cooperative, but expressed confidence that things will improve once they become one.

“The training has been an eye opener to us, above all, becoming a cooperative according to what we have learnt, is the way to go”, he says.

Ruth Mtengambiri, a member of PUSEPA, notes that the training has assisted the members in understanding the history of cooperatives, their objectives, and how they are established and financed.

Thyolo District Agribusiness Officer, Joram Jester, indicated that eight farmer groups are currently benefiting from the AGCOM 2 Program in the district. He expressed confidence that the training will strengthen group management, enhance market access, and foster collaboration with various stakeholders.

Nearly 129 office bearers from 43 cooperatives across the country are undergoing Bookkeeping, Accounting, and Procurement training in Mzuzu, Blantyre, and Lilongwe, which, among other things, aims to equip participants with step-by-step skills in identifying, recording, posting, and summarising farm transactions into financial statements.

Chairperson of Nthola-Erora Cooperative, Hastings Gondwe from Chitipa, has expressed confidence that the training he is attending at Mzuzu RTC will enable the cooperative's officers to effectively manage the MK292 million grant they are receiving from AGXOM 2.

Gondwe says that the knowledge gained from the training will strengthen record-keeping, enhance transparency, and standardize procurement processes at the Kilombero rice-producing cooperative.

He noted that the grant, which will be used to procure a tractor, planter, and harvester, as well as to support the construction of a rice drying bay and a warehouse, will significantly boost production and productivity at the cooperative.

Rachel Chisambo, treasurer of a groundnut-growing cooperative in Rumphi, who is also attending the training, says the training is filling knowledge gaps, such as budgeting and tracking farm expenditures to determine if the business is making a loss or a profit.
