Malawi will soon have real-time weather updates following the construction of a weather radar facility at Kasamba Hills in Mdeka, Blantyre.

Speaking during a tour of the construction site, Minister of Natural Resources Honourable Patricia Wiskes MP said the radar system will enable the country to receive reliable, real-time weather forecasts.

She said this will help the government plan ahead for adverse weather conditions.

“We have been losing a lot of money because we were taken unawares by extreme weather events,” Honourable Wiskes said who was also accompanied by Deputy minister of Natural Resources Honourable Chipiliro Mpinganjira.

Similar facilities are expected to be built in the Central Region and later in the Northern Region.

The radar has the ability to detect weather patterns within a radius of 250 kilometres in all directions.

The project will be handed over to the government in the next 3 months.

Site engineer for the project, Isaac Saint from E-Trading Corporation, said the project includes the construction of a radar tower, a server room, access roads, and supporting security infrastructure.

The weather radar project forms part of efforts to strengthen Malawi’s preparedness for floods, cyclones, droughts and other climate-related hazards that have increasingly affected the country in recent years.

Minister of Natural Resources, Honourable Patricia Wiskes MP, says communities have a role to play in restoring degraded landscapes.

The minister said this during a visit to Msambadzukulu Village Forest in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Jenala, Phalombe District, on Thursday.

The forest is a 3.5 hectare that is protected and managed by the local community.

The minister said such initiatives align with government vision to ensure that there is climate resilience among communities.

In Phalombe the minister also visited the Mulambe Irrigation scheme under TRANSFORM project within the Ministry of Natural Resources.

Using ground water pumped by solar power, the communities in TA Jenala are irrigating 8 hectares land to grow maize and legumes.

Chairperson of the scheme Laison Makupala said once completed, the scheme will help the community to achieve food security in the area.

In Mulanje, the minister who was also accompanied by Deputy minister of Natural Resources Honourable Chipiliro Mpinganjira, Secretary for Natural Resources Dr Misheck Munthali, Directors and Management toured Forestry Department offices at Likhubula and inspecting the Likhubula Mountain Lodge facilities, which are expected to resume operations soon.
