SURVEYORS KEY TO MALAWI'S DEVELOPMENT AGENDA
The Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Honourable Chimwemwe Chipungu, MP, on Wednesday, described surveyors and other built environment professionals as critical drivers of Malawiโs socio-economic transformation and development.
Addressing delegates when he officially opened the Mid-Year Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Conference, in Lilongwe, for the Surveyors Institute of Malawi, the Minister underscored that surveying profession remains central to land governance, infrastructure development, urban planning and investment management.
โAs a Ministry, we are aware that the surveying profession and the built environment sector require strong institutions and operational regulatory frameworks in order to function effectively and professionally,โ the Minister said.
Chipungu noted that the conference theme, focusing on governance and sustainable public-private sector development, comes at a time when Malawi is pushing for industrialization, urbanization and agricultural commercialization under the Malawi Vision 2063.
He emphasized that surveyors are not merely service providers but strategic development partners whose expertise is essential in building a modern and industrialized economy.
Vice President of the Surveyors Institute of Malawi, Emmanuel Thawani, said the institution remains committed to enhancing professionalism, ethical conduct and competence among surveyors in the country through continuous professional development initiatives.
The Minister further highlighted efforts to operationalize key regulatory institutions, including the Valuation Tribunal, Board of Valuers, Real Estate Management Council, Land Survey Registration Board and the Malawi Geographic Information Council to strengthen professionalism.
