K447 Million CDF funded Chikhuni-Bondi road rehabilitation in Rumphi commences

Rumphi, September 30, MANA: Rumphi District Council has commenced rehabilitation works on Chikhuni-Bondi road utilizing K447 million allocated to the project under Reformed Constituency Development Fund (CDF) in 2026/27 financial year, a development expected to improve access to essential services for communities in the Bondi area.

Group village headman (GVH) Chikalamba whose area is served by the road, said an improved road to Bondi will enhance farming as the area has fertile soils which attract a lot of farming enthusiasts to the area.

“People who farm at Bondi encounter a lot of challenges to transport their produce to the main market at Rumphi after harvesting due to poor road condition. Once completed, such farmers will have easy access to the market to sell their produce,” said Chikalamba.

Women representative for Bumba Area Development Committee (ADC), Brenda Mughogho said the poor road state has also been affecting pregnant women travelling to health facilities forcing others to deliver on the way to the facilities.

Director of Public Works for Rumphi District Council, Silence Chirambo, says rehabilitation works will include construction of box culverts, concrete sections, spot gravelling, installation of pipe culverts and controlling water flow near bridges.

He further said that the council will intensify supervision through its desk officers to ensure that the project meets the required quality standards set by the Council within the agreed timeframe of 120 days and is expected to be completed by December, 2026.

Karonga Councils in dialogue over revenue investments

Karonga District Council Chairperson Atusaye Mwenifumbo has called for dialogue and cooperation between Karonga District Council and Karonga Town Council to resolve issues over council properties, including houses, the plot where district offices are situated, the guesthouse and depot.

Mwenifumbo says the issue should not divide Karonga, stressing that both councils must focus on development and service delivery rather than disagreements over properties and revenue.

Mwenifumbo has suggested the two councils meet on Friday and he has advised to approach the meeting with fairness and mutual respect, saying the process should be guided by the Ministry of Local Government and the interests of Karonga residents.

Meanwhile, Karonga Town Council Chairperson Baleke Maholo disclosed during a Full Council Meeting on Friday that the two councils are expected to discuss the outstanding issues surrounding the properties.

Maholo said the Town Council's main source of revenue is market collections, which generate limited income, and that regaining control of its properties would provide additional revenue streams to support development and service delivery. By George Mponda

CDF sports allocation to boost Likoma talent

Likoma District Commissioner Abubakar Nkhoma says the sports and creative arts allocation under the Reformed Constituency Development Fund (CDF) has potential to improve sports and nurture talent.

Nkhoma said this on Tuesday when Likoma District Council briefed the Constituency Development Committee (CDC) on standard operating procedures for the sports and creative arts allocation under the Reformed CDF.

He said Likoma had previously produced athletes in swimming and other disciplines through the Malawi Schools Sports Association (MASSA), with some representing the district and country at national and international competitions.

CDF Sports and Creative Arts Desk Officer Antonio Manda said the allocation would provide opportunities for different sporting and creative disciplines that have struggled to develop because of limited resources.

CDC Chairperson Harrison Chimwaza commended the council for orienting them on the fund, saying the exercise demonstrated commitment to transparency and helped stakeholders understand how the allocation would benefit communities.

Thyolo DC urges CDF officers to uphold accountability

Thyolo District Commissioner Noel Dakamau has urged the newly recruited Reformed Constituency Development Fund (CDF) officers to maintain professionalism, transparency and accountability in the implementation of development projects.

Dakamau made the call on Tuesday when he opened an orientation workshop for CDF officers from all constituencies in Thyolo.

The training focused on project identification, supervision, procurement and financial reporting, with Dakamau cautioning officers against corruption and negligence and stressing that every Kwacha allocated to CDF must be properly accounted for.

He also urged CDF officials to involve communities at every stage of project implementation to promote ownership and sustainability, while ensuring that projects are properly supervised and comply with procurement procedures.

One of the participants, a public works supervisor Witness Chiponde said the training was timely and useful, saying it has enhanced their knowledge and skills in contract management, quality control, teamwork and responsible management of public resources. Limbikani Charles -Thyolo
