Government Launches Periodic Maintenance of M001 Road

The Government of Malawi has launched periodic maintenance on the M1 Road between Lilongwe and Blantyre, reinforcing its commitment to upgrading national infrastructure and improving safety along this vital transport corridor.

Speaking during the event held at Lobi/Thete Turn-off in Linthipe, Dedza District, Minister of Transport and Public Works (MoTPW) Honourable, Jappie Mhango described the M001 as Malawi's principal transport corridor and one of the country's most valuable national assets as it links major cities, facilitates domestic and regional trade.

“The periodic maintenance works we are commencing will restore the riding quality of the road, improve safety, reduce vehicle operating costs and extend the lifespan of this strategic national asset. It is Government's firm commitment that every road user should enjoy a safer, smoother and more efficient journey along this corridor,” he said

Board Chairperson of the Roads Authority (RA) Eng. Dr. Witness Kuotcha, said the M001 is a gateway to the region and the world as it facilitates the movement of goods to and from our neighboring countries and beyond, through the ports of Dar es Salaam, Beira, Nacala and Durban, driving regional integration, trade, and economic growth for Malawi.

The periodic works will involve reconstructing the pavement layers and re-surfacing. Shoulder widening and resealing of selected sections and replacement of vandalised culverts, centre and edge line marking and installation of road signs.
The Contractors which include Master / China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC); DEC/ACH/Mungo JV and Mkaka – PBM Joint Venture are already on site and have started mobilizing, clearing and grubbing, clearing potholes, and constructing diversions.

The Roads Fund Administration (RFA) and the Roads Authority (RA) today held a joint media briefing at Chingeni Toll Plaza to provide the public with an update on toll revenue collections, utilisation of toll funds, and ongoing maintenance works on the M001 Road.

Between April and June 2026, toll collections reached MK1.77 billion, representing a 56% increase from the same period last year. The revenue is being channelled directly into maintaining the tolled road, with contractors already on the ground carrying out rehabilitation and resurfacing works on priority sections of the M001.

James Dzonzi, Finance Manager for the Roads Fund Administration, said: "Every kwacha collected through toll fees is ring-fenced and dedicated exclusively to maintaining the tolled road. While toll revenue has increased significantly, it must be complemented by fuel levy resources to deliver the level of road rehabilitation that Malawians expect."

Eng. Derrick Manda, Chief Maintenance Engineer at the Roads Authority, said: "The resources generated through toll fees are already being translated into action on the ground. We have contractors mobilised and carrying out rehabilitation, resurfacing and other targeted maintenance works on priority sections of the M001 to improve safety."

The government is rehabilitating 55km of the Nsipe-Liwonde Road, including the construction of 4 concrete bridges, one of which is the road over rail bridge at Balaka, and the construction of several circular and box culverts. The Roads Authority advises all motorists that traffic on the M001 Road at Mpasadzi Bridge in Kasungu will be temporarily stopped on Sunday, 26 July 2026, to allow for controlled rock blasting as part of the bridge reconstruction works.

💥 Blasting: 2:00 p.m.
⏱️ Expected Duration: Approximately 30–45 minutes, subject to safety inspections and clearance of the carriageway.

The Roads Authority is pleased to announce the appointment of Eng. Chisomo Dan Kauma as Acting Director of Major Projects, effective 2 July 2026.

A seasoned Professional Registered Civil Engineer with over 15 years of experience, Eng. Kauma brings extensive expertise in transport infrastructure, project management, engineering design, construction supervision, and strategic planning. He has successfully led and contributed to the implementation of major infrastructure projects financed by development partners, including the World Bank and the African Development Bank.

As he assumes this important responsibility, we are confident that his leadership and wealth of experience will contribute significantly to the successful delivery of the Authority's major road infrastructure programmes.
