At the ongoing Education World Forum (EWF), Minister Msaka took part today in a focused technical dialogue on structured pedagogy and Teaching at the Right Level, meeting with global experts including Ben Piper from the Gates Foundation and Peggy Dubeck from RTI International.

The conversation was a natural fit for where Malawi is right now. Teaching at the Right Level — known as TaRL — is an approach that identifies children who are falling behind and supports them to catch up by teaching them at the level they are actually at, rather than the level they are supposed to be at. A pilot is currently running in 80 schools in Mchinji, and from September 2026 it will expand to 220 schools across Machinga and Kasungu. Lessons from the pilot will shape Malawi's national remediation approach from 2027 onwards.

Malawi is not just learning from the global evidence base — it is contributing to it.

On the margins of the Education World Forum, 🇲🇼 Minister of Education Hon Bright Msaka joined other education ministers from for a high-level roundtable of the Ministerial Taskforce on Ending Violence in, Around and Through Schools.

The roundtable, chaired by UK Minister for International Development and Africa Baroness Chapman, and Minister Sackey, brought together ministers committed to strengthening prevention, response and accountability across education systems. Malawi is a member of this Taskforce — a commitment that reflects a straightforward belief: no child can learn in a place where they do not feel safe.

The discussion builds on Malawi's engagement in last year's Taskforce and looks ahead to the Second Global Ministerial Conference to End Violence Against Children in Manila in November 2026.

The Education World Forum (EWF) got off to a powerful start this morning as African education ministers gathered for a dedicated breakfast focused on foundational learning.

Hosted by the British Council and Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, the session brought together ministers and senior representatives from the Global Coalition for Foundational Learning to share practical experiences and build connections around what it takes to get every child reading and counting in the early grades.

Minister Msaka shared Malawi's experience — including the National Mathematics Curriculum Reform now reaching approximately four million children in Standards 1 to 4, with independent evaluation showing that one year of the reformed curriculum equates to 1.5 years of learning under the previous system. Malawi had something genuine to contribute to that conversation, and it showed.
