🇬🇧 Enabling Women and Girls right to choose her own future.

The UK has announced a new £254 million package of support to expand access to voluntary family planning, maternal healthcare and life-saving reproductive health commodities worldwide. The investment is expected to help avert 14 million unintended pregnancies and prevent more than 35,000 maternal deaths by 2028

In Malawi, the Government of Malawi recently unlocked match funding through the UNFPA compact leveraging UK and partner funding to go further and reach more women and key populations with essential commodities and services. We are working closely with health partners and communities to improve maternal and reproductive health services, this investment will help ensure more women and girls can access the information, services, and choices they need to make informed decisions about their futures.

Supporting women's sexual and reproductive health and rights is not only about health. It helps girls stay in school, enables women to participate fully in society and the economy, and contributes to healthier families and communities. Together, we can help ensure that every woman and girl has the opportunity to thrive.

🇲🇼🇬🇧 Renewable energy, TVET and green skills are at the heart of a growing UK-Malawi partnership.

Through the British Council's Going Global Partnerships programme, Exeter College and partners in Malawi are working together to strengthen technical and vocational education and equip young people with the skills needed for a greener future.

During a recent visit to Malawi, Exeter College's Group Executive Director of Partnerships and Apprenticeships, Mike Blakeley, met stakeholders from Mzuzu Technical College, Mzuzu University, Lilongwe Technical College and the Ministry of Labour to explore opportunities for collaboration in renewable energy, workforce development and technical education.

Discussions focused on advancing the Green Skills agenda, including the development of a Centre of Vocational Excellence for Renewable Energy and efforts to ensure skills training keeps pace with the needs of Malawi's future workforce.

The partnership will continue through an upcoming visit by Malawian delegates to Exeter College, creating further opportunities for learning, knowledge exchange and collaboration between TVET institutions in the UK and Malawi.

Together, the UK and Malawi are helping build the skills, expertise and partnerships needed to support sustainable economic growth.

Breaking barriers and powering possibilities for girls in renewable energy! 🇬🇧🇲🇼

Tabitha Zulu is proving that women can thrive in technical fields through her studies in Solar Photovoltaic Installation at Mzuzu Technical College’s Renewable Energy Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE). What started as an unexpected opportunity quickly became a passion as Tabitha discovered the potential of renewable energy in transforming communities and creating sustainable livelihoods. Today, she can install household solar systems, repair faulty systems, and work on solar-powered irrigation projects. Through the partnership with the EU-funded Zantchito Skills for Jobs Technical Assistance project, implemented by the British Council, students like Tabitha are looking forward to accessing the CoVEs fully equipped workshops that will strengthen practical learning and innovation.

For Limbikani, a student at the Marine Transport Energy Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) at Salima Technical College, TEVET skills are more than qualifications—they are a pathway to independence, income and a better future. Through the EU-funded Zantchito Skills for Jobs Technical Assistance Project, implemented by the British Council, Malawi is strengthening skills development and connecting young people to industry-relevant training.

Connecting Borders Through Data: How UK Support is Making Trade Faster and Smarter 🇬🇧🇲🇼

Through the UK-funded Malawi Trade and Investment Programme (MTIP), Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) and Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) are electronically exchanging customs data, helping border officials identify risks before goods arrive and speeding up the clearance process at the Songwe border. Since the launch, the system has already exchanged over 27,600 customs declarations from Tanzania to Malawi and 8,950 declarations from Malawi to Tanzania.

The impact has been significant and the number of import declarations processed at Songwe increased by 156%, taxes collected rose by 131%, and additional revenue recovered through enhanced customs checks increased by 509%. The system has also enabled advance risk analysis, helping reduce clearance times while strengthening revenue collection.

By supporting digital customs systems and cross-border data sharing, UK support is helping to make trade more efficient, transparent and secure. Building on this success, MTIP is now supporting the development of a similar customs data exchange system between Malawi and South Africa to further facilitate regional trade with one of Malawi’s largest trading partners.

From Days to Hours: How UK Support is Modernising Trade Services 🇬🇧🇲🇼

Through the UK-funded Malawi Trade and Investment Programme (MTIP), businesses across Malawi can now access export trade services online through the Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry Single Digital Portal. What once required multiple visits, paper forms and lengthy processing can now be completed digitally, making trade faster, easier and more transparent.

The portal enables traders to process documents and payments electronically and is integrated into Malawi's wider digital trade ecosystem. The impact is already being felt. Processing times for Certificates of Origin have fallen from 48-72 hours to just 2-12 hours, while nearly 64% of users report lower transaction costs following digitisation. The platform is helping businesses save valuable time, reduce transaction costs and access trade services from anywhere in the country.

By digitising trade services, UK support is helping create a more efficient and business friendly trading environment, allowing Malawian firms to focus less on paperwork and more on growing their businesses and accessing new export markets.

From the forests of Nkhata-Bay to the University of Glasgow: meet Sylverio Mwandira.

Sylverio is an Assistant Forestry Officer at Nkhata-Bay District Forestry Office, under Malawi's Department of Forestry. He's now heading to Scotland to study an MSc in Environmental Risk Management, supported by a Commonwealth Scholarship.

In his own words: "My work experience has given me direct insight into the increasing frequency of climate-related hazards and their impacts on local communities... I aim to deepen my expertise in risk assessment and environmental modelling, enabling me to design nature-based solutions to reduce vulnerability to cyclones, floods and droughts."

Sylverio hopes to use this knowledge to improve disaster preparedness and build long-term climate resilience for communities across Malawi.

From lecturing on renewable energy at MUBAS, to a PhD in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Strathclyde: meet Chimwemwe Chisembe.

Chimwemwe is a lecturer in Applied Physics, with a strong focus on renewable energy, at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS). He's now heading to Scotland to pursue a PhD in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, supported by a Commonwealth Scholarship.

In his own words: "This award has made my dream come true. I have always aspired to pursue doctoral studies to deepen my skills and knowledge, with the ultimate goal of contributing significantly to Malawi's development through research within the energy sector."
