Standing with Malawi in the fight against HIV, TB and Malaria

This week, government officials, development partners, civil society and health professionals gathered in Lilongwe for the National Dialogue on Global Fund Grant Cycle 8 โ€” a crucial moment to shape the next chapter of Malawi's health story.

On behalf of Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, as the newly elected Chair of the Health Development Partners Group (HDPG), Health Adviser Dr Rashid Zaman represented development partners at the dialogue.

He called for investments that deliver the greatest impact, equity and value โ€” prioritising interventions that reach the most vulnerable and strengthen Malawi's own health systems for the long term. ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ผ

Transforming learning starts with transforming what happens in the classroom. Hear from Ameera, an engineer in the making benefiting from Malawi's National Mathematics Curriculum Reform in partnership with the Malawi Government, The UK and Prevail Fund.

Together, we are strengthening foundational numeracy and improving learning outcomes for every child.

In response to the bilateral funding figures published this week, the Acting High Commissioner and Development Director Ben Nicholson has said the following:

โ€œ The United Kingdom remains a long-term friend and trusted partner of Malawi. Our support continues to be shaped by Malawiโ€™s own priorities: restoring economic stability, unlocking finance, strengthening institutions, building climate resilience and creating the conditions for long-term growth. The future UK-Malawi partnership is one of collaboration, investment and shared ambition.

The bilateral funding figures published this week are baseline allocations for flexible and adaptive support, not the full UK offer. UK support will increasingly come through direct UK expertise and finance via multilateral institutions, climate finance, British investment and partnerships with private philanthropy.

UK-attributable multilateral support to Malawi is estimated at least ยฃ40-50 million per year through institutions including the World Bank, IMF, Global Fund, Green Climate Fund and African Development Bank.

The UK will continue to support the Government of Malawi with credible reforms that can restore macroeconomic stability, strengthen public finances, improve debt sustainability and rebuild investor confidence. Stronger public finances are essential for better schools, clinics, jobs, food security and resilience.โ€ END

โ€ข Energy and investment: Through British International Investment, the UK is backing the Mpatamanga Hydropower Project, a 365MW renewable energy investment that could increase Malawiโ€™s generation capacity by around 60%, supporting jobs, growth and energy security.

โ€ข Critical minerals: UK technical expertise is helping Malawi develop its minerals sector responsibly, including opportunities linked to rutile, graphite and rare earths, so Malawi can attract investment on fairer and more transparent terms.

โ€ข Debt and fiscal reform: The UK is supporting Malawiโ€™s reform programme through work with international financial institutions on economic stability, public financial management and debt sustainability. This support is designed to help Malawi unlock more affordable finance and move from repeated crisis management towards stronger economic foundations.

โ€ข Climate finance: The UK is helping Malawi access larger pools of international climate finance for agriculture, energy, infrastructure, health and resilience. Building on existing work, we will support the Government of Malawi to establish a dedicated Climate Finance Unit, helping coordinate priorities, develop stronger proposals and unlock more funding from multilateral climate funds and other partners. UK support has already helped Malawi secure a $37 million Green Climate Fund grant.

โ€ข Health: The UK remains a committed partner in strengthening Malawiโ€™s health system, including through the Health Sector Joint Fund and wider partnerships. UK health work has helped attract $40 million from the Beginnings Fund for maternal and newborn survival, alongside continued work on research, digital health, disease prevention and health system resilience.

โ€ข Education: More than twenty UK-Malawi higher education and research partnerships are active. UK-supported foundational learning work, delivered with the Government of Malawi and private philanthropy, is helping improve numeracy outcomes (doubling number of 10 year olds achieving expected level of numeracy) and strengthen the education system for the long term.

โ€ข Resilience: The UK is helping Malawi move from repeated emergency response towards better preparedness, including disaster risk financing, early warning, anticipatory action and stronger national systems. The aim is to help Malawi anticipate, withstand and recover from future shocks.
