MALAWI COMMEMORATES WORLD FOOD DAY
Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale has said it is the wish of the government to end hunger in the country.
Speaking at Chimbiya Primary school in Zomba during the joint commemoration of World Food day and African food day and security Kawale said the focus of government is not to reduce hunger but rather end it completely.
The minister said this is why government including agriculture stakeholders is implementing various interventions aimed at promoting and sustaining food security.
" As a ministry , we are trying our level best and we will ensure that we are food secure. Among others, we are intesfying irrigation farming, providing agricultural loans through National Economic and Empowerment Fund (NEEF) and establishment of more mega farms," said Kawale.
The minister has since urged malawians to take farming a serious business and those close to water sources to embrace irrigation agriculture.
Traditional Authority Nkapita of Chingale Zomba hailed government for constructing two irrigation schemes in the area which he said would help in ending hunger.
" We would like to thank Government for constructing Mlooka and Matoponi irrigation schemes that will improve food security in the area," the chief said.
