With 12 Points, NCHE Left Him Twice, Now He Graduates as a Medical Doctor from Cairo University, Egypt on Scholarship
Benjamin Rex Malema scored 12 points in his MSCE. Here in Malawi, that usually means one thing: Public University is calling your name.
Back at Karonga CDSS, he was that quiet, determined boy in Form 3 who used to adore other form 4 intelligent students. He was a teenage banter and dreams were quietly being built.
In 2015, he sat for his MSCE and came out shining, one point better than the boy he admired. Twelve clean points. Everyone knew it was only a matter of time before NCHE sent him to university and study his dream programme.
But 2016 came. He applied. Left out.
2017 came. He applied again. Left out.
By then, almost everyone in his class with similar points had gone to college. The first had 11 points. He and his friend had 12.
Yet he remained at home, watching others wear G-college hoodies while he battled disappointment in silence. The pressure nearly pushed him into destructive habits. Confusion turned into quiet heartbreak.
2018 was his final attempt. This time, it was not about prestige. According to him, it was "anything, as long as I go to university." When the results came, he was selected to study Technical Education at The Polytechnic, the current Malawi University of Business and Applied Science ( MUBAS).
It was not his dream, but what what else could he do? it was a door. So he walked in.
One semester later, another door opened, unexpected and divine. A scholarship opportunity through the Egyptian Embassy. He applied.
And this time, heaven answered loudly.
He was selected to study MBBS at Cairo University, a degree he always wanted.
Seven years of discipline, sacrifice, and chasing excellence in a foreign land followed. From the banks of Rukuru River to the streets of Cairo, he traded doubt for determination.
Yesterday, Benjamin Rex Malema graduated.
Not just with any paper, but Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and turned into a Dr.
The boy NCHE left twice is now a medical doctor.
His story is proof that rejection is sometimes redirection. That delay is not denial. And that when God writes your script, no system can cancel it.
Congratulations, Dr. Benjamin Rex Malema.
