GREAT NEWS FOR MALAWI

The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has successfully attained the Southern African Development Community Accreditation Service (SADCAS) accreditation for its Temperature Calibration Laboratory.

The accredited scope includes calibration of:
✅ Thermometers (liquid-in-glass, platinum resistance and mechanical dial gauge)
✅ Thermocouples
✅ Temperature installations such as ovens, furnaces, refrigerators and freezers
✅ Realization of the ice point

In addition, the MBS has maintained its accreditation status for:
⚖️ Calibration of weights and scales (Mass Laboratory)
🧪 Calibration of pipettes and glassware (Volume Laboratory)

This achievement demonstrates the MBS' continued commitment to providing internationally recognized, accurate and reliable calibration services that support industry, trade, health, agriculture, research and consumer protection.

The accreditation strengthens confidence in measurements and contributes to the growth of Malawi's quality infrastructure.

MBS Stops Uncertified Toilet Paper Production in Lilongwe

During a market surveillance exercise in Kanengo, Lilongwe, on 04th June 2026, the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) officers discovered that Fytu Investments was manufacturing toilet paper without MBS certification following the relocation of its operations from Area 49 to Kanengo.

The inspection further revealed that the facility was operating under very unhygienic conditions, posing risks to the quality and safety of the products.

The MBS has immediately stopped the company's operations and imposed a fine of MK2.4 million.

The MBS remains committed to protecting consumers by ensuring that all products on the market comply with national standards and quality requirements.

MBS Impounds Expired Soya Chunks in Limbe

The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) on 01st June 2026, has impounded 300 bales of expired Meru Soya Chunks from Price Worthy Wholesalers in Limbe, Blantyre, during a routine market surveillance exercise.

The Meru Soya Chunks were found on sale despite having expired and were immediately removed from the market. The Price Worthy Wholesaler has been fined MK3 million for the offence.

The MBS continues to conduct market inspections across the country to protect consumers from unsafe products and ensure compliance with standards.

 Always check product expiry dates before purchasing.
