DMAP ICT equipment boosts NSO digital transformation efforts

Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Dr. Shadreck Namalomba, has said the ICT equipment donated to the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Digital Malawi Acceleration Project (DMAP) will significantly improve the institution’s efficiency and enhance public service delivery.

Dr. Namalomba made the remarks on Thursday during an inspection tour of NSO offices in Zomba, where he appreciated the impact the newly acquired equipment is already making in supporting the institution’s digital transformation agenda.

The Minister noted that the equipment has strengthened NSO’s operational capacity, particularly in the development of its new website and the processing of key national statistical data.

He further encouraged NSO to integrate its digital systems with the BOMALATHU e-Service Platform, a government one-stop digital services portal aimed at improving access to public services.

He also urged the institution to host its systems at the National Data Centre, another flagship initiative under DMAP designed to improve data security, reliability, and interoperability across government institutions.

“We have advised them to ensure their systems integrate with others and align with the BOMALATHU platform for seamless interoperability,” said Namalomba.

The Minister reiterated the government’s directive for all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to embrace digital technologies as part of efforts to modernize public service delivery and improve operational efficiency.

NSO Commissioner for Statistics, Shelton Kanyanda, described the donation as timely, saying it has come at a critical moment when the institution is implementing reforms aimed at enhancing digital service delivery and data management systems.

“We are developing a new website, and this work is being done using these computers. As you also know, we conduct inflation analysis and compile national statistics, and these computers are supporting that work,” said Kanyanda.

He added that the equipment will improve productivity among staff and strengthen the institution’s capacity to generate timely and accurate statistical information that supports national planning and decision-making.

Under the Digital Malawi Acceleration Project, NSO received 30 desktop computers and five printers as part of a wider nationwide distribution exercise targeting ministries, departments, and agencies.

In total, DMAP has procured and distributed 2,700 computers, 823 printers, and 30 tablets to public institutions across the country to strengthen digital operations, improve efficiency, and support the government’s digital transformation agenda.

Digital Malawi Project transforming higher education through MAREN internet connectivity

Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Dr. Shadreck Namalomba, has commended the Malawi Research and Education Network (MAREN) for expanding internet connectivity to higher learning and research institutions, describing the initiative as a game-changer in the country’s education sector.

He made the remarks yesterday during a tour of the Malawi Research and Education Network (MAREN) facilities at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) in Zomba, one of the beneficiaries of the Digital Malawi Project.

Namalomba emphasized the critical role of reliable internet connectivity in improving the quality of education and research in institutions of higher learning.

“The Digital Malawi Project, through MAREN, is transforming lives because students can now access online learning materials, research journals, and other academic resources with ease. Gone are the days when accessing scholarly materials required spending huge sums of money on books or waiting for long periods. Today, with just a click, students and researchers can access the information they need,” said Namalomba.

The Minister further urged MAREN to ensure uninterrupted internet connectivity in order to sustain quality teaching, learning, and research services in universities and other research institutions.

He also encouraged MAREN to expand connectivity to remote schools across the country so that more learners can benefit from digital learning opportunities.

Speaking during the tour, MAREN Chief Executive Officer, Solomon Dindi, disclosed that under the new Digital Malawi Acceleration Project, the institution has been tasked with connecting 2,000 schools to free internet services nationwide.

Dindi added that MAREN has established a sustainable operational model through revenue generated from internet services provided to universities and other institutions.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Malawi, Professor Samson Sajidu, said the internet connectivity provided through MAREN is currently benefiting about 2,000 students residing on campus.

He added that while a few challenges remain, plans are underway to extend the service to students living off campus.

Through the Digital Malawi Project, MAREN received financial support and bandwidth capacity to strengthen internet service delivery to higher learning and research institutions nationwide.

Currently, MAREN is serving 84 higher learning and research institutions with advanced internet connectivity, increased bandwidth, and enhanced value-added services aimed at improving learning, teaching, and research standards in Malawi.

Government Lauds Digital Malawi Project Milestones

Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Dr. Shadric Namalomba, has applauded the Digital Malawi Project for making significant strides in transforming Malawi into a digitally enabled nation through expanded high-speed internet access, improved digital inclusion, and the digitisation of public services.

Dr. Namalomba made the remarks today during a tour of selected beneficiaries of the Digital Malawi Project in Blantyre.

The Minister toured the Blantyre National Library, Blantyre Market, and Rydberg Starck Limited, where he appreciated the impact of the project on communities, businesses, youths, and entrepreneurs.

At both the Blantyre National Library and Blantyre Market, members of the public are benefiting from free Wi-Fi connectivity installed under the project, while at Rydberg Starck Limited, over 600 youths and women benefited from digital skills and entrepreneurship training through the former Luntha Ndi Chuma Digital Skill and Innovation Programme.

Speaking after the tour, Namalomba described the initiative as an “awesome project” that is already bearing tangible results by improving access to digital services and connectivity, particularly in public spaces.

“It is encouraging to see that the project is transforming lives and creating opportunities for Malawians. Through this initiative, communities are now accessing internet services that were previously unavailable or unaffordable,” said Namalomba.

The Minister further said the government expects that by the end of the project in 2030, nearly 80 percent of Malawi’s population will have access to affordable or free internet connectivity.

However, he acknowledged that limited bandwidth remains one of the major challenges affecting the full utilisation of the services. He said the government will continue engaging relevant stakeholders and partners to expand the initiative and ensure its long-term sustainability.

At Blantyre Market, traders and customers expressed excitement over the free Wi-Fi service, saying it is contributing positively to business growth and communication.

One of the market chairpersons, Stevie Majawa from Chemusa Township, described the initiative as a major business booster.

“We are making more sales because customers know that when they come here, they can also access free internet services. The connectivity is also helping us advertise and sell our products online, which is growing our businesses,” said Majawa.

Meanwhile, Blantyre-based youth-led software company Rydberg Starck Limited has hailed the project for empowering local innovators and technology entrepreneurs.

The company’s Programmes Manager, Cuthbeth Magawa, said the initiative has been a game-changer for the company, enabling it to expand its operations and create employment opportunities for young people.

“Now we are able to offer our services to government institutions and several corporate companies in the country. We started with only three people, but currently we have 11 employees, and we also provide internship opportunities to students from different universities,” said Magawa.

The Digital Malawi Project connected over 500 public institutions and community spaces across the country, including schools, national libraries, post offices, and hospitals, thereby expanding access to digital services and internet connectivity for Malawians.

Through the Luntha ndi Chuma programme, the project also empowered young people with digital and entrepreneurship skills, training more than 19,000 youths nationwide. In addition, the initiative provided 160 sub-grants to startups and innovation-driven enterprises across Malawi, supporting the growth of local businesses, innovation, and job creation.
