The Generational Empowerment Movement (GEM) today conducted a specialized training workshop for 12 digital champions in Blantyre.

The capacity-building session targeted content creators and university peer educators, alongside representatives from the Centre for Community Health, Research and Youth Development (CHeR-YoD).

Speaking during the training, GEM Deputy Director Ulanda Mtamba said the workshop focused on equipping participants with practical techniques to draft engaging online content, disseminate accurate information regarding available HIV prevention options, dismantle persistent myths and misconceptions, and amplify youth perspectives to foster informed health choices.

She urged young advocates to take a proactive stance in spreading HIV prevention messaging across social media channels to reach a broader audience of their peers.

"We are living in a digital era, and more young people are online. We should be able to get them where they spend most of their time," Mtamba noted.

Mtamba emphasized that young Malawians are missing out on emerging digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) opportunities for advocacy available at both regional and global levels.

She encouraged participants to build their digital literacy to access these international spaces effectively.

Mtamba reaffirmed GEM’s commitment to supporting youth initiatives in Blantyre District, pledging sustained backing for community-driven HIV prevention efforts.

District Commissioner for Blantyre Alex Mdooko, has called for stronger collaboration among government departments, civil society, and local communities to combat corruption, emphasizing that shared responsibility is vital to solving the country’s development challenges.

Mdooko made the appeal on Friday at Lunzu Primary School ground during a joint anti-corruption awareness campaign conducted by Institutional Integrity Committees from various government departments.

He observed that corruption often begins with minor misdeeds at the community level before escalating into systemic graft, highlighting the urgent need for unified action to tackle the problem.

Chairperson for Blantyre District Council Lenzo Kalonga called on the ACB to sustain and expand its anti-corruption campaigns deeper into rural areas to protect grassroots public service delivery.

The Institutional Integrity Committee (IIC) for Blantyre District Council has called on communities to report suspected cases of corruption and bribery to relevant authorities in order to safeguard development projects.

The call was made on Friday at Lunzu Primary School ground during a joint anti-corruption awareness campaign conducted by Institutional Integrity Committees from various government departments.

Speaking at the event, Chairperson of the IIC for Blantyre District Council, Atupele Malimbasa Katsabola, said reporting corruption is crucial to ensuring that public resources are used for their intended purposes.

The campaign is part of the Anti-Corruption Bureau's (ACB) broader efforts to fight corruption through Institutional Integrity Committees.

Joseph Gama and Memory Kutengule Chatonda have been elected as Chairperson and Vice Chairperson, respectively, of the Blantyre District Advisory Forum (DAF) following an election held Friday at the Blantyre District Council offices.

Gama, who represents the Community Development Office, and Chatonda, from the Information Office, will lead the forum in guiding the National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Trust at the district level.

Speaking on behalf of Gama, Kenneth Luke Dumbula thanked forum members for entrusting the Community Development Office with the leadership pledging to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to advance civic education and strengthen community participation in governance across the district.

NICE District Programmes Officer Glory Ngosi Maulidi advised the newly elected leaders to remain non-partisan while offering strategic advisory support to NICE activities.

She further urged DAF members to support the implementation of NICE initiatives at the community level.

DAF is mandated to advise and guide NICE district offices on civic and voter education issues, particularly regarding the implementation of the organization's strategic plan. Its key responsibilities include conducting regular evaluations of district action plans, carrying out participatory community needs assessments, and serving as a consultative body on local governance matters affecting communities across Blantyre

Blantyre District Council on Thursday engaged Members of Parliament, Ward Councillors, interest group representatives, and traditional leaders to update them on proposed projects under the Reformed Constituency Development Fund (RCDF).

Officials from Blantyre District Council, partner organisations, and local community members gathered at Chadzunda Market on Saturday for a cleanup exercise to commemorate World Cleanup Day, observed annually on Sept. 19.

Speaking during the event, Director of Health and Social Services for Blantyre District Health Office, Dr. Gift Kawalazira, urged community members to maintain high hygiene standards to prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases, particularly cholera.

"Blantyre registered several cholera outbreaks, with poor hygiene being the primary contributing factor. This commemoration serves as a reminder to everyone that good hygiene is the foundation of a healthy life," said Kawalazira.

Dr Kawalazira cautioned the public to sustain the practices beyond the commemoration, warning that the looming rainy season could trigger new cases if preventive measures are neglected.

IsraAID Program Manager Itai Denga emphasised that public places like Chadzunda Market require constant attention, noting that food sold under unhygienic conditions poses a severe health risk to the entire community.

He advised residents to extend the market’s hygiene practices into their own households.

Chadzunda Market Chairperson Simeon Ndalama assured that the market committee is prepared to maintain regular cleanup activities to guarantee a safe environment for both traders and customers.

Minister of Health and Sanitation Madalitso Baloyi has launched a nationwide measles-rubella vaccination and Vitamin A supplementation campaign which will run from September 21 to September 25.

Speaking at Lumbira Ground in Blantyre on Friday, the Minister said measles-rubella vaccine targets children between nine months and nine years old, while Vitamin A supplement covers infants aged six months to 59 months.

World Health Organisation Country Representative Dr Charles Kurianjoguna said measles and rubella are highly infectious diseases which can spread rapidly from one infected child to many unvaccinated children.

"Measles can cause complications including pneumonia, ear infections, gastroenteritis, encephalitis and malnutrition, some of which can result in death."

Kurianjoguna urged parents and caregivers to follow the routine vaccination schedule, saying children should receive a measles-rubella vaccine at nine months and return for a second dose at 15 months.

Malawi Red Cross Society Secretary General Chifundo Master Kalulu said the Red Cross has deployed a number of volunteers to support the campaign through community mobilisation to encourage parents and guardians to have their children vaccinated.
