As part of efforts to strengthen public health and prevent disease outbreaks, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Councillor for Linjidzi Ward, Akima Mustaf Chipwatali, has launched a sanitation and hygiene campaign at Lirangwe Market in Blantyre North Constituency.

Speaking during the launch on Tuesday at Lirangwe Market, Chipwatali said the campaign is part of the implementation of the Executive Order issued by President Peter Mutharika in March this year.

“This campaign, dubbed ‘Love Your Market’, reflects our collective responsibility to ensure that markets remain clean, safe, and healthy environments for both traders and the public,” she said.

Blantyre District Council Chairperson Lenzo Kalonga appealed to market users to dispose of waste responsibly and utilise the designated collection points to facilitate proper waste management.

Lirangwe Market Chairperson Manuel Bwaila stressed that maintaining hygiene at the market is a shared responsibility, warning that outbreaks of sanitation-related diseases negatively affect both vendors and customers using the market.

Last month, Blantyre District Council launched an Executive Order on sanitation and hygiene to promote cleanliness in public places.
