GIS - June 24, 2010: The Rose Belle North Government School has become the first primary school in Mauritius to be certified ISO 9001:2008. The award ceremony was held this morning on the school premises in the presence of the Minister of Education and Human Resources, Dr. Vasant Bunwaree. The ISO 9001:2008 certification for primary scho
ols is an initiative of the Regional Directorate Zone 3 of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources aiming to improve the overall standard of schools and engage in a quality management system. It is a method of promoting continuous improvement through policies and procedures that are constantly evaluated to prove the effectiveness of the organisation. In the case of schools, the institution needs also to make sure its policies and procedures are in conformity to applicable statutory and regulatory requirements of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources. Rose Belle North Government School enrolled on the certification programme in September 2009. The school was assessed with respect to international quality management system standards. Its key areas of assessment included quality teaching/learning and extracurricular activities, improvement of the professional image of the school, clarity and quality of responsibility and authority, enhanced cleanliness of the school, setting up of an endemic garden to encourage pupils to learn about endemic plant species and the use of Information Technology. Following two audits conducted by the Mauritius Standards Bureau, the school was awarded its certification on 2 April 2010. The inauguration today of a new block comprising a media library (médiathèque), a science laboratory and a new administrative office is in line with the targets set in the ISO 9001:2008 to continually engage in quality improvement. The media library and the science laboratory serve to enrich the learning experience of children. The media library will encourage a culture of reading among the pupils while the science laboratory, which has been equipped through the contribution of the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre and the Rotary Club, will stimulate the curiosity and interest of children and facilitate transition to lower secondary education. Rose Belle North Government School was inaugurated in 1986. The total pupil population is 733 while the teaching and non teaching staffs comprise some 40 people. Among the objectives targeted by the school for the end of the year is the improvement of Standard IV, V and VI performance so that the pass rate increases from around 70% to 80%.
