A child can turn against the parent who protects them to stay safe with the parent they fear.

That can look impossible from the outside.
Why reject the person who feels safer?
Because children do not always move toward the safest relationship.

Sometimes they move toward the relationship with the most dangerous consequences.
If disagreeing with one parent brings rage, punishment, withdrawal, interrogation, or relentless pressure, agreement can become protection.

The child learns:
Do not challenge this parent.
Do not defend the other parent.
Do not say you miss them.
Do not become the next target.

So the safer parent may receive the rejection precisely because rejecting them feels survivable.
The child may trust, consciously or not, that this parent will still love them.
That they will not retaliate.

That the relationship can absorb what the feared relationship cannot.
This does not mean every rejecting child is being alienated or frightened by another parent. Family estrangement has many causes and must be understood carefully.

But when fear and coercive pressure are present, a child’s apparent “choice” may not reflect where love is strongest.
It may reflect where resistance feels most dangerous.

That distinction matters because the protective parent can otherwise interpret rejection as proof that the bond was false.
It may not be.
Sometimes the child is sacrificing the relationship they trust to survive the relationship they do not.

The behavior can be heartbreaking.
Its logic can still be survival.

❤️ Save this if you are trying to understand a child whose rejection seems completely opposite to the relationship you once knew.

Today marks World Su***de Prevention Day, observed every year on 10th September to raise awareness about su***de prevention, encourage open conversations around mental health and remind people that support is available.

The day serves as an important reminder that checking in on someone, listening without judgement and taking signs of distress seriously can make a difference.

It also aims to challenge the stigma that can stop people from speaking openly about what they are going through or asking for help.

If someone around you seems to be struggling, reaching out with a simple message or conversation can be an important first step.

And if you are struggling yourself, you do not have to face it alone. Reaching out to someone you trust or seeking professional support can help.

Take a moment today to check in on the people around you.

A Maltese child and adolescent mental health organisation has warned that the fallout surrounding the Daphne Caruana Galizia case could have a wider psychological impact on young people.

The Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health (ACAMH) issued the warning in the aftermath of the recent trial concerning Caruana Galizia’s assassination, saying that regardless of how people interpret the verdict, “children and adolescents are watching closely.”

The organisation said young people observe not only what happens in courts and public institutions, but also how adults respond, including “the language we use, the anger we amplify, the standards we excuse and the values we defend.”

According to ACAMH, repeated exposure to allegations of serious wrongdoing, hostility, division or an apparent lack of accountability can cause “moral distress” and, in more severe circumstances, contribute to what psychiatrists describe as “moral injury”.

“This is not simply a political issue. It is a child and adolescent mental-health issue,” the organisation said.

ACAMH warned that the effects may emerge through cynicism, anger, withdrawal, hopelessness or a belief among young people that honesty and fairness do not matter.

However, the organisation stressed that this does not mean shielding children from difficult realities or disagreement. Instead, it called for truthful, age-appropriate conversations and for adults to model integrity when discussing injustice and social conflict.

“It takes a village to raise a child. The moral health of that village matters,” ACAMH concluded.

Do you think Malta’s current political climate is affecting younger generations?
