Income Support and Investigations Directorate MALTA Entrusted with the responsibility of investigating all reports that highlight possible non compliance with the provisions of the applicable legislation.

The Directorate is committed to investigate all reports of alleged abuse in social benefits and to submit recommendations to suspend or re-assess rate of benefits, as required, where these benefits are found to have been abusively or fraudulently received. The Directorate also investigates on its own initiative cases of beneficiaries or categories of beneficiaries suspected of abusing the social b

enefits system. Within the parameters of existing legislation, in its operations, the Directorate makes all possible use of available information. In this regard, it communicates and coordinates with other Departments and entities to ensure that its investigations are as thorough as possible. The Directorate seeks to identify and act immediately to avoid the perpetuation of fraud or abuse.

Facts:
• The Benefit Fraud and Investigation Department has been operating since 2006
• It has effected savings estimated at €38,000,000
• Over 10,000 benefits have been reviewed or stopped

The above was achieved with a Cost/Savings ratio of €7.56:€100 (for the period 2006 – 2015)

The savings effected are enough to provide for the building of four new schools!

The Benefit Fraud and Investigation Department takes social benefit fraud seriously.

There has to be a good reason for investigating someone for social benefit fraud. This is why you need to give as much of the following information as possible when requesting an investigation:

a) the name and address of the person you’re reporting and their partner, if they have one

b) the type of benefit abuse you think they are committing and why you suspect them

c) information about their employer, if you think they’re working

d) information about their vehicle, if they have one

The information you provide is strictly confidential.

You don’t have to give us your name unless you want us to contact you for more information.
