Ħal Tarxien Prehistoric Complex World Heritage Site

Ħal Tarxien Prehistoric Complex World Heritage Site The Ħal Tarxien Prehistoric Complex is a UNESCO inscribed World Heritage Site which was built during the Late Neolithic period in Malta.

The Tarxien Prehistoric Complex consists of four megalithic structures built around 5000 years ago during the Late Neolithic and later re-used during the Early Bronze Age as a cremation cemetery. They are managed by Heritage Malta, Malta's National Agency for museums, conservation practice and cultural heritage. Discovered in 1913 by local farmers, the site was the first of its kind to be fully ex

cavated between 1915 and 1919. The buildings are typical of the megalithic structures in Malta and Gozo which in time became known as 'Temples'. The people who built the Tarxien Prehistoric Complex were a rural society descended from the first inhabitants of Malta who arrived, most probably from Sicily, around 7000 years ago. Although they did not have writing or metal, they were an advanced society of farmers, builders and craftsmen capable of producing fine pottery and stone tools.

Look up‼️👷

If you visited the Ħal Tarxien Prehistoric Complex last week you may have noticed workers atop the site's protective shelter.

Their maintenance work remains essential to ensure that the shelter remains strong enough to protect the site from the harsh natural elements.

🇲🇹 F’Jum il-Ħaddiem, niftakru b’apprezzament f’dawk kollha li taw il-kontribut tagħhom għall-protezzjoni u l-istudju tas-siti preistoriċi Maltin. Il-ħarsien tal-patrimonju kulturali tagħna mhux xi skop bla sens; meta napprezzaw u nħarsu l-passat nistgħu nsibu l-għeruq tal-identità tagħna llum. Fi kliem David Lowenthal: “Il-ħila li niftakru u nidentifikaw mal-passat tagħna jagħti tifsira, skop u valur lill-eżistenza tagħna.”

🇬🇧 On Workers Day, we remember with appreciation all those who contributed to the protection and study of Malta’s prehistoric sites. Safeguarding our cultural
heritage is not some meaningless objective; in appreciating and safeguarding the past we may find the roots of our identity today. In the words of David Lowenthal: The “ability to recall and identify with our own past gives existence meaning, purpose and value.”

🇲🇹 Biex jinżamm l-istess livell għall-binja, il-komunità li bniet l-istrutturi preistoriċi f’Ħal Tarxien ħaffret il-blat b’tali mod li jixbah il-pjanta aħħarija tal-kamra. Fl-istruttura tal-Lvant nistgħu naraw eżempju ċar ta’ kif il-blat tħaffer f’forma ta’ nofs tond – l-istess forma li kellha tieħu l-kamra meta titlesta.

🇬🇧 In order to keep to the same level for construction, the community who built the prehistoric structures at Ħal Tarxien cut the bedrock in such a way to mimic the plan of the finished chambers. Within the Eastern structure we can see a clear example of this where the bedrock has been cut into the semi-circular shape that the chamber would eventually take.

🇲🇹 Dawn ir-reċipjenti tal-fuħħar huma repliki, iżda tqiegħdu fejn instabu r-reċipjenti oriġinali waqt l-iskavi. Huma jinsabu quddiem taraġ b’inklinazzjoni wieqfa ħafna, li tissuġġerixxi li ż-żona, li kien iwassal għaliha t-taraġ, ma kinitx faċilment aċċessibbli.

🇬🇧 These pottery vessels are replicas, but they had been placed where the original vessels were discovered during excavation. They stand in front of a staircase whose steep incline suggests that the area that it led to was not easily accessible.

🇲🇹 Skopert fl-1913 mill-bidwi Lorenzo Despott, il-Kumpless Preistoriku ta’ Ħal Tarxien jikkonsisti f'sit magħmul minn erba’ strutturi megalitiċi. Dawn inbnew għall-ewwel darba fin-Neolitiku Tardiv u aktar t**d ġew adattati mill-ġdid għall-użu matul iż-żmien tal-Bronż Bikri. L-istruttura tal-lvant hija l-eqdem parti tal-kumpless. Għalkemm illum fadal biss il-parti t’isfel tal-ħitan tagħha, il-faċċata konkava u l-ħames kmamar għadhom jidhru b’mod ċar, u jagħtuna ħarsa lejn it-tqassim oriġinali tagħhom. Skavi arkeoloġiċi estensivi twettqu bejn l-1915 u l-1919 taħt id-direzzjoni ta’ Sir Themistocles Zammit, li dak iż-żmien kien id-Direttur tal-Mużewijiet, u li kkontribwew b’mod sinifikanti biex nifhmu aħjar dan is-sit preistoriku importanti.

🇬🇧 Discovered in 1913 by farmer Lorenzo Despott, the Ħal Tarxien Prehistoric Complex is made up of a complex of four megalithic structures. These were first built in the Late Neolithic period and later readapted for use during the Early Bronze Age. The easternmost structure is the oldest part of the complex. Although only the lower part of its walls survives today, its concave façade and five chambers are still clearly visible, offering a glimpse into its original layout. Extensive archaeological excavations were carried out between 1915 and 1919 under the direction of Sir Themistocles Zammit, who was Director of Museums at the time, helping to shape our understanding of this important prehistoric site.
