Today was a happy day for our volunteers, as we released turtles Tarvo and Red-X back in to the sea after recovering at our rehabilitation centre 💚

Tarvo was rescued near Hondoq in Gozo by Kayak Gozo in September 2025 with ingested fishing line which was entangled around a garden chair!

Red-X was rescued with a large entanglement at Little Armier in May 2026 in rough conditions with the help of Malta Red Cross Lifeguards.

Thankfully both turtles made a full recovery and today they are finally free 🙏 we wish them both the best of luck and hope that they manage to avoid getting stuck in marine litter again 😢 bith cases highlight why it is so important to clean up our beaches and seas and pick up any litter that we see!

All of the animals that we rescue are protected species and it is illegal in Malta to harm them or keep them as pets.

Mama Houdina and her 3 hoglets- Snap, Crackle & Pop have been released back in to the wild 🥰 it's been a joy having them in rehab with us but ultimately the most rewarding part of volunteering is seeing them released back in to the wild where they belong ❤️ we wish all the best to this beautiful little family 🙏

Update 2nd Nov: She is breathing better after the cleaning and oxygen treatment. She has not eaten anything overnight, and we are assessing whether it's because she can't smell or because she was exhausted from the ordeal. For now we're monitoring very closely.

Usually we post rescues that are not very severe. However, it is good that everyone sees some of the injuries we encounter.

Strimmer injuries in hedgehogs tend to be very severe, with open bleeding wounds. Today's rescue, although not a big open gash, is just as bad.

This hedgehog was 'lucky', in the sense that the strimmer only grazed her nose. However it still caused quite a deep wound, whereby the hedgehog is struggling to breathe.

She was taken immediately to our vets, who first cleaned the wound and then placed her on oxygen. There is a very big possibility she is pregnant, and treatment options will be determined once an ultrasound is carried out.

We don't know if she'll make it, but we will certainly try.

It only takes 5 minutes to check the area before you start using machinery. But those 5 minutes can make a whole lot of difference to our wildlife.

💔 Glue traps don’t choose their victims

At a site in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, three lizards and one gecko were found caught on glue traps.

By the time they were discovered, one of the lizards and the gecko had already died. Our volunteers carefully freed the remaining two lizards from the adhesive, but sadly one had sustained serious injuries during its desperate attempts to escape and died shortly afterwards.

So only one of the four animals survived and could eventually be released back into the wild.

Glue traps may look simple, but for an animal caught on one, they can cause prolonged and severe suffering. Once an animal touches the adhesive, instinct tells it to escape. It pulls. It twists. It struggles harder.

And the more it struggles, the worse the situation can become. Skin can tear. Limbs can be badly injured or even torn off. Feathers and fur can become completely embedded in the adhesive. As an animal desperately tries to free one part of its body, another can become stuck.

Eventually, it may simply become exhausted and completely immobilised. Unable to reach water, food or shelter, a trapped animal may remain there for hours or even longer. Injured, frightened and unable to escape, before dying from its injuries, dehydration, starvation or exposure.

For an animal caught this way, it can be an incredibly slow and cruel death.

And the adhesive cannot distinguish between its intended target and wildlife. A lizard or gecko simply moving through the area, a bird landing in the wrong place, or another small animal investigating its surroundings can become trapped just as easily.

These images are a painful reminder that something designed for pest control can have devastating consequences for completely unintended victims 😢

If you ever find a wild animal stuck to a glue trap, please do not try to pull it free. Removing an animal incorrectly can cause severe additional injuries. Contact wildlife rescuers for assistance instead.

For three of these little animals, help came too late 💔

Kevin & Hobbes — our two little fighters 🦔🦔❤️
Meet Kevin and Hobbes, two tiny hedgehogs who came into our care at the beginning of July in a very fragile state.
Kevin was found on a factory floor in Kordin covered in black oil and weighing just 13g and Hobbes was found by a farmer in Marsascala weighing only 26g — both far too small to survive without help. What followed were weeks of round-the-clock feeds, sleepless nights, worrying moments and quite a few ups and downs.
But these two defeated the odds 🙏.
Slowly they grew stronger, learned to eat on their own and started behaving more and more like the feisty little hedgehogs they are meant to be.
They have now reached another important milestone: Kevin and Hobbes have moved from their foster mama (one of our rehab volunteers) to our rehab centre, where they will spend the next part of their journey growing, gaining weight and preparing for life back in the wild.
For now, their only job is to eat, grow and learn how to be proper hedgehogs 🦔❤️.
When they are big and strong enough, the best part of their story will come and they will be released back where they belong. We will be sharing their release videos so watch this space ☺️.

A reminder that hedgehogs are Lactose intolerant and should NEVER be given cows milk. For hoglets in our care we use a special hedgehog formula 🥰.

🦇 Another successful release for one of Gozo’s night-time residents 💚

Last week, this juvenile female Savi's Pipistrelle bat was found trapped in a bucket of water in Victoria. Exhausted and unable to maintain flight on her own, she was brought into our care for assessment and rehabilitation.

After a short stay with us, we’re happy to say she regained her strength and was successfully released back into the wild this week – right where she belongs. 🌙

Recently, articles about a tragic rabies-related death in Canada have been widely shared on local social media, leading to understandable concern about bats. We’d like to reassure everyone that there is no known local transmission of rabies in Malta and there is no need to fear our local bat species.

Bats play a vital role in our ecosystem by helping to control insect populations naturally. If you ever find a bat that appears injured, exhausted or unable to fly, please contact the Wildlife Rescue Team rather than attempting to care for it yourself.

A little peek behind the scenes at feeding time at our Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre 🐢🦔💚

From sea turtles to hedgehogs, every animal in our care has its own individual needs as they recover and prepare for their eventual return to the wild.

Feeding time is always an important part of the day at our rehabilitation centre, and a lovely opportunity to catch a glimpse of some of the animals currently in our care.

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre at Xrobb l-Għaġin is open for guided tours daily, Monday to Sunday, from 10:30–11:30am.

Tours are free of charge, but must be pre-booked in advance by emailing [email protected] or sending a whatsapp on +356 9944 1992 or +356 9980 6688. Please note that some days get very booked up in advance 🙏

Come and meet some of the animals in our care and learn more about the work that goes into helping Malta’s wildlife recover and, whenever possible, return to the wild 🌿

Again this year's heat wave is making us struggle with a surge in hedgehog and bat admissions. We join other wildlife rehab centres in europe and inform the public that they can help hedgehogs and other wildlife by putting shallow trays of water in gardens etc
Let us save our local natural heritage.

Today is a sad day for us.

In the afternoon, we received a call about a dead turtle in St Julians. Two of our volunteers went on site to check and take measurements, and once there, they confirmed that the turtle was microchipped.

Upon checking the microchip number, we confirmed it was turtle Nathalia.

Nathalia had arrived to our rescue team on 27th April 2025 with a severe injury to her front left flipper from a boat propellor strike. The flipper needed immediate amputation, but over the following months, Nathalia had adapted well to swimming with a missing flipper, and was released on the 20th of December 2025.

Unfortunately, it looks like her cause of death could be another boat injury.

We have taken Nathalia to our rehab centre, to await a necropsy to confirm 100% the cause of death.

We're so saddened by this. After months of rehabilitation and adaptation, being released back is the ultimate goal.....only to have humans cause another injury, this time fatal.

Rest easy Nathalia, we're sorry we (humans) have let you down.
