Malta Diocesan Archives The Archives of the Archbishop of Malta contain the diocesan records from the second half of the 15t

The Archives of the Archbishop of Malta (AAM) contain the diocesan records from the second half of the 15th century up to the present day. It is thus not only a historical archive, but one that continues to grow. Since the Church was the only institution who up to the second half of the 19th century preserved records on the population in general, the material conserved in its archives constitutes

a valuable, and indeed indispensable, source of information not only for historians interested in the history of our nation, but also for researches who embark on studies as varied as demographic growth, social studies, economic history, as well as all those eager on reconstructing their family history. The Archdiocese of Malta has embarked on the project of completely refurbishing its Diocesan Historical Archive, so as to better provide for the conservation of the documentation held within it. This Archive stands as a visible witness to the constant service that the Church in Malta has offered throughout the centuries, as it continues to do, to the people of these islands. This archive holds a vast collection of documentation spanning more than five centuries, including documents related to Pastoral Visits, and the Status Animarum, both indispensable collections in society studies, those related to the Bishopsโ€™ secretariat, to parishes and confraternities, all necessary sources in the study of the ecclesiastical and civil history of Malta. Other collections include those related to the institution of marriage, most useful for the research of family trees, and yet others stand as a documentary testimony to the development of the artistic patrimony of our islands.

On 20 June 1717, Bishop Giacomo Canaves began his pastoral visit in Mellieฤงa and the surrounding areas. Among the records of this visitation survives a detailed three-day account of provisions consumed and services rendered.

The document lists a range of food itemsโ€”including finer provisions such as semolina bread ๐Ÿž and imported cheese and wine ๐Ÿง€๐Ÿทโ€”as well as the payment for fish ๐ŸŸ consumed on Saturday, observed as a day of abstinence. Notably, it also records snow (ice), then imported from Sicily โ„๏ธ.

A surviving fragment from a now-lost architectural plan of Casa Manresa found recently sheds light on the origins of this important building, today housing the Archbishopโ€™s Curia in Floriana.

It records that Casa Manresa was blessed and inaugurated on 16 March 1751 by Bishop Paul Alpheran de Bussan, in a ceremony attended by Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca, together with knights and Gran Croci of the Order of St John. Originally intended for the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius, the building continues to serve the pastoral mission of the Church in Malta.

Casa Manresa also forms part of the national patrimony, both as an architectural landmark and as a repository of artistic works by Antoine Favray and Francesco Zahra

Today marks 275 years since the blessing and inauguration of Casa Manresa, the historic building that today houses the Malta Diocesan Archive.

A recently discovered documentโ€”once part of an architectural plan of the building, now unfortunately lostโ€”records that Bishop Alpheran de Bussan blessed Casa Manresa on 16 March 1751. The ceremony was a remarkable occasion: the Grand Master of the Order of St John Frร  Emanuel Pinto de Fonseca attended together with the Knights and several Gran Croci.

Originally founded as a house for spiritual retreats, Casa Manresa continues to serve the Church today as part of the Archdiocese of Malta's administrative offices, remaining faithful to the spirit of pastoral care for which it was established.

To mark this anniversary, the restored titular painting of the chapel, depicting the Madonna di Manresa by Antoine Favray (1748), was also inaugurated, returning this historic artwork to its rightful place in the chapel

The titular painting of the Chapel of Our Lady of Manresa at Casa Manresa in Floriana, by celebrated artist Antoine Favray, has been restored to mark the 275th anniversary of the official inauguration and blessing of the historic building. Carried out over the past year by conservator Amy Sciberr
