🕯️Marjane Satrapi, the celebrated French-Iranian artist, filmmaker, and author, died in Paris at the age of 56. According to an official statement released by her family, Satrapi died of what they described as a "death of grief," just over a year after the passing of her husband, producer Mattias Ripa, an emotional blow from which, according to her inner circle, she never recovered.
Most of us first encountered her through Persepolis, some through the graphic novel, others through the film, but all through its message, its artistic merit, and its ability to raise the intellectual bar by telling real stories with black and white drawings. Suddenly, Iran was no longer a vague newspaper article, but a child's bedroom, a handkerchief, a line through which she channeled everything a country was experiencing.
