As part of its efforts to explore the registration of traditional Maltese crafts under the European Geographical Indications (GI) framework, the Malta Crafts Foundation is launching a series of meetings with local artisans to discuss and agree on the characteristics and specifications that define crafts closely tied to the local territory.

The first meeting will focus on the traditional Maltese clock, popularly known as the Arloġġ tal-Lira.

The meeting will be held at the Malta Crafts Foundation offices in Ta’ Qali on the coming Monday, June 15 at 18:00h and represents an important first step towards the preparation of the documentation required for a potential Crafts Geographical Indication application.

Traditional clock makers working on Arloġġi tal-Lira are invited to attend and kindly confirm their participation by contacting [email protected].

As this year’s Premju Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti is fast approaching, we caught up with the awardees of Category 2 – Inspiring Artisanship and Innovation through Collaboration from last year’s edition and presented them with their trophies, alongside the products developed through their collaborative projects over the past months.

Awardees, in alphabetical order:

• Alda Bugeja & Keith J. Caruana – Il-Barżakka tal-Kaċċatur: The Revival
A contemporary reinterpretation of a traditional Maltese hunter’s bag, combining textile craftsmanship and leathercraft to reimagine a distinctive element of Malta’s rural heritage.

• Alfie Gatt & Nadège Cassar – Qawl Milbus
A jewellery collection inspired by Maltese proverbs, translating familiar expressions into contemporary wearable pieces through silversmithing and design.

• Andrew Gingell Littlejohn & Davina Preca – Ġgant
A furniture collection consisting of an armchair and footstool, inspired by the Ġgantija Temples and the quiet rhythm of village life.

• Christian Bezzina & Owen Axisa – The Opuntia Project: The Coffee Table
A multifunctional coffee table fusing heritage with innovation through metalwork, woodcraft, and leathercraft, to meet the demands of modern living.

• Luke Azzopardi & Mark Borg – The Bloom of Tradition: Filigree Reimagined
A contemporary fashion piece that reinterprets traditional Maltese filigree, producing a finely detailed and expertly finished series of tiaras.

This category seeks to encourage local artisans to share ideas and work together to bring innovation to the sector, enabling them to explore new opportunities while ensuring that traditional skills continue to evolve and remain relevant in a contemporary context.

These products, along with other creations competing in this year’s Premju Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti, are currently being exhibited at Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta until June 28.

The session will be held on Sunday, June 28th, between 10:00h and 12:00h. Falling on the eve of a public holiday, it presents the perfect opportunity for a trip to Gozo centred around craft and creativity.
