Replantation of amputated right arm conducted successfully at Yangon General Hospital

A three-year-old girl with an amputated right arm arrived at the Yangon General Hospital from Aunglan Hospital at 4 pm on 20 March following a motorcycle accident of her parents that occurred at 9 am on the same day.

The operation started at 5 pm on that day and was successfully completed at 10:20 pm.

On arrival at the Yangon General Hospital, the doctors, nurses and health workers of the emergency department, conducted the needed checks on the patient in a timely manner.

The arm surgical team led by Dr Tin Tun Aung, a specialist (in hand surgery) and Dr Phyo Maung Maung, a specialist (in hand surgery) of Yangon General Hospital, medics led by Prof/Head (Anesthesia) Prof Dr Mu Mu Naing and Prof Dr Mya Soe and a nursing group led by Staff Nurse Daw Aye Aye Khine conducted the replantation successfully.

According to the record of the hospital, the patient is the youngest one for the operation of the amputated right arm. She was discharged on 24 April after completing the rehabilitation programmes at the hospital. She was readmitted to Yangon General Hospital on 10 May and the Sural Nerve Graft operation was conducted on 16 May. Currently, she does proper exercises and is in good condition.

If the amputees are transferred to the general hospitals, the amputated hands must be washed with clean water or normal saline or Ringer Lactate and wrapped in Gauze moistened with normal saline or Ringer Lactate and put in a clean plastic bag or box or a clean plastic bag or box containing Normal Saline or Ringer Lactate, and stored in a box filled with ice. — MNA/KTZH
