What makes a currency strong? 💪

Today, together with the Народна банка на Република Северна Македонија and SwissCham MK, we explored this question through the story of the Swiss franc — one of the world’s most stable currencies.

The discussion highlighted an important lesson from the Swiss experience: trust is built over generations through strong institutions, responsible governance and long-term commitment to the public interest.

Swiss Ambassador Christoph Sommer opened the Government Debt and Risk Management Peer Learning Exchange in Skopje, jointly organized by the Ministry of Finance of North Macedonia and the World Bank.

Switzerland supports the Government Debt and Risk Management Program because sound debt and fiscal risk management are essential for economic stability, resilience, a conducive business climate and sustainable growth. The exchange brings together practitioners from around the world to share practical experiences on managing contingent liabilities and strengthening public finance institutions.

Switzerland remains committed to promoting peer learning, transparency, and effective fiscal governance as foundations for long-term economic confidence.

They discussed the long-standing cooperation and Switzerland’s continued support to the State Audit Office of North Macedonia, specifically in the areas of capacity building and skills development towards more transparent and accountable public institutions.

💧 Strengthening water utilities for the future! 💧

On World Environment Day, we kick-started a new Swiss project with the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning and seven municipalities Berovo, Bitola, Kocani, Kumanovo, Radovish, Strumica, and Vinica to improve the resilience and efficiency of their water and wastewater utilities. This shall contribute to reducing water losses, increasing energy efficiency, strengthening renewable energy use, and improving the sustainability of water services.

At the launch event, Ambassador Christoph Sommer recalled that water can no longer be taken for granted. By strengthening institutions, improving infrastructure, and supporting local leadership, we can deliver more reliable services and lasting benefits for citizens while addressing climate change and the ageing infrastructure.

Switzerland is proud to continue its long-standing partnership with North Macedonia in building sustainable and efficient water services for communities across the country.

Today, North Macedonia started the process of developing the new National Tourism Strategy and Action Plan, bringing together institutions, academia, the private sector, and civil society to shape the sector's future.

At the kick-off event, Ambassador Christoph Sommer joined Minister of Culture and Tourism Zoran Ljutkov and highlighted that sustainable tourism is not only about protecting nature and cultural heritage but also about creating opportunities for local communities and ensuring long-term economic resilience.
