The Andapa Public Library opened in 2013 to provide English language education and resources to all people in the greater Andapa community. The Library’s collection includes almost 1,500 books, including 78 dictionaries, and other audio/visual learning tools. In addition to the book collection, the Library serves as a meeting place for students and a community conference space. The Library also he
lps to support the community by hiring a local person to work as the librarian. The mission of the Andapa Public Library is to promote English language learning among students and adults in Andapa by offering educational courses, books and audio resources, extracurricular activities, and opportunities to study with native English speakers. Currently, the Library offers a number of different programs that serve to support the mission statement. Taken together, these programs allow those individuals who are interested in English and American culture to expand their knowledge and refine their communication skills. English Club for adults: This group meets two times per week for an hour and a half lesson. Any person interested in learning English can attend these meetings. The group meets in the evenings to accommodate for the other daily responsibilities of members. The focus of these classes is improving basic conversation skills and everyday English usage. English Club for students: This group meets once per week for a 2-hour lesson. Students from local secondary schools (collèges and lycées) can attend these meetings. There are two levels offered, one for beginners and one for more advanced students. Extracurricular activities: In addition to studying English, many students participate in other activities that are organized among members of the English Club. For example, there are basketball and football teams and groups that perform dancing routines and sing songs. During these activities, members are encouraged to speak English as much as possible. American cultural lessons: Occasionally, the Library will host lessons about relevant American cultural topics. Examples include celebrating American holidays, discussing American lifestyles, and practicing American pronunciation styles of English language. Participation in EARS (English Association of the Region SAVA): The Andapa Public Library is a member of EARS, which seeks to unite all English clubs in the SAVA region. During EARS conferences, a delegation of English Club members from Andapa attends the meetings to showcase their knowledge of the English language and to perform English songs and dances.
