Accobams dolphin & whale conservation - dauphins & baleines

Those mysterious clicks you are hearing are the vocalizartions of s***m whales.

Only a few thousand individuals remain in the Mediterranean Sea; the Mediterranean subpopulation of s***m whales is considered Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

Vessel strikes pose a deadly threat to these animals, along with underwater noise and pollution.

The first edition of the ASI-I initiative collected precious data on this species, enabling us to better understand its distribution and abundance.

The ASI-II campaign is now underway to reassess population trends monitor marine megafauna

Some news from the Song of the Whale research vessel's surveys as part of the campaign!
1. Sara Benchekroun (a PhD student in Morocco's National Institute of Fisheries) looking for cetaceans
2. An Audouin's gull circling the Song of the Whale team as they survey along the coast
3. A large group of common dolphins was encountered.

ASI-II is implemented thanks to the financial support of the Office français de la Biodiversité, the European Union (FEAMPA France), the Ministry of Environment and Water of Bulgaria, the Principality of Monaco, HDR EOC Inc in the framework of the U.S. Navy Marine Species Monitoring Program, as well as the support of the Italy’s contribution to MSFD, ISPRA, and the Life Mare Natura project. The full description of ASI-II partners can be found on the ACCOBAMS website.

On 9 June 2026, the Executive Secretary of ACCOBAMS attended the 18th meeting of the Scientific and Technical Committee (CST) of the Pelagos Agreement at Fort Cap Brun, headquarters of the French Mediterranean Maritime Prefecture.

The meeting began with the handover between the outgoing CST Chair, Caterina Fortuna, and the newly elected Chair, Léa David. The ACCOBAMS Secretariat warmly congratulates Léa David and thanks Caterina Fortuna for her dedication and valuable work.

This intensive day of work focused on the evaluation of the 2022–2027 Management and Action Plan and the development of the subsequent plan for 2028–2033, which will set out guiding principles to address challenges

in biodiversity conservation and the protection of cetacean habitats within the Sanctuary. During the afternoon session, the coordinators of the Pelagos working groups presented the results of their work.

The ACCOBAMS Secretariat remains committed to strengthening cooperation to improve the conservation status of cetaceans in the region. Together, ACCOBAMS and the Pelagos Agreement can advance concrete solutions to major threats to marine wildlife, including ship strikes and underwater noise.

The research vessel The Song of the Whale has officially set sail, departing from the port of Vilamoura, Portugal!

This marks the launch of its surveys across the Mediterranean Sea and in the contiguous Atlantic area as part of the 2nd ACCOBAMS Survey Initiative.

Over the next three months, scientists from across the region will take turns aboard the sailing vessel to collect data on cetaceans, marine megafauna, and marine litter.

They will mobilise their scientific expertise to detect marine species from the vessel's observation platform. To detect deep-diving species such as s***m whales, the scientific team may employ passive acoustic monitoring.

In turn, the data collected by the project will form the foundation for more effective marine conservation policies across the region.

As the vessel-based surveys are starting, we are pleased to highlight one of the project's key partners: Marine Conservation Research International!

This summer, its emblematic research vessel, The Song of the Whale, will sail across the Mediterranean and the contiguous Atlantic area as part of the campaign to gather data on cetaceans and marine megafauna.

Founded in 2011 to continue the Song of the Whale research programme initiated in the late 1980s, MCR international is a unique not-for-profit organisation. It has developed extensive experience in delivering practical conservation projects focused on threatened marine wildlife and habitats, as well as investigating human impacts, including underwater noise and marine debris. The Song of the Whale was instrumental in delivering the first ASI campaign (2018 – 2023)

🎙️ Richard McLanaghan, the Director of MCR international, shares a few words ahead of the campaign: "The MCR / Song of the Whale team is proud and honoured to be working with ACCOBAMS and all the regional partners once more to help deliver the ASI2 project"

Final preparations are underway in Portugal to ensure the The Song of the Whale is ready for its campaign in the Mediterranean Sea and the contiguous Atlantic area!

As part of the second edition of the ACCOBAMS Survey Initiative ( ), this emblematic research vessel will navigate across the region throughout the summer.

It will collect valuable data on cetaceans, marine megafauna, and marine litter through visual surveys and acoustic monitoring.

Stay tuned to follow its journey, discoveries and research efforts across the basin!

The field campaign is officially underway !

On June 1st, the first team of aerial observers started their surveys, marking the operational start of this major scientific campaign.

The ACCOBAMS Survey Initiative represents an unprecedented effort to collect data on marine megafauna - including fin whales, s***m whales, dolphins, rays, sharks, and sea turtles- as well as marine debris across the Mediterranean. This data will be key to protect ecosystems across the region.

On 28-29 May 2026, the ACCOBAMS Secretariat attended the Blue Economy & Finance Forum (BEFF) in Monaco.

Bringing together investors, financial institutions, businesses, policymakers, philanthropies and innovators, is designed to connect capital with solutions that can help accelerate the transition to a sustainable and regenerative blue economy.

The morning session was opened by Prince Albert II of Monaco, who called for stronger collective action to scale up the blue transition and translate ambition into action. During the afternoon session, one of ACCOBAMS’ key collaborators, SINAY, presented its work leveraging data to protect ecosystems, notably through improving underwater noise and vessel speed data within the framework of its collaboration with ACCOBAMS.

Alongside other international organisations based in the Principality of Monaco, the ACCOBAMS Secretariat hosted a stand to showcase its efforts to protect cetaceans and highlighted the ASI-II campaign to monitor cetaceans across the Mediterranean, whose field activities are beginning!

As the campaign’s start approaches, we take a moment to highlight the successes of the first edition of the ACCOBAMS Survey Initiative (2018–2023).

By combining large-scale aerial surveys, vessel-based efforts, and acoustic monitoring, ASI delivered the first basin-wide estimates of abundance and distribution for key cetacean populations.

These results have been instrumental in informing conservation and policy processes. They contributed, among others, to the designation of a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) by the International Maritime Organization in the Northwestern Mediterranean, as well as to major regional assessments, including updates to the IUCN Red List for several threatened cetacean species.

Building on this strong foundation, will further advance our understanding of marine ecosystems and strengthen conservation efforts.

Stay tuned for more updates !
