The Ambassador has just returned from a month in Australia for consultations and a vacation. First stop was the gateway to the Indian Ocean, Perth. A walk up to King’s Park gave a beautiful overview of the city and the magnificent Swan River.

The Moroccan Honorary Consul in Perth, Mr Edmund Damouni, graciously hosted the Ambassador at a reception, with tastes and accents of Morocco. The Ambassador had useful discussions with a range of contacts in Perth and was able to congratulate again Malik Lemzouri and the Moroccan Association of Perth for winning the award for best Moroccan association abroad at the 7th Civil Society Awards in Rabat in December 2025.

Productive meetings were held with his alma mater, University of Western Australia as well as StudyPerth, Western Australia to investigate options to deepen education cooperation; with Australian mining and energy companies and the Chamber of Minerals and Energy, to discuss possibilities to increase engagement on minerals and energy; and the Western Australian Government on the range of options to strengthen trade and investment linkages between Western Australia and Morocco.

Investing in women researchers means investing in stronger, more innovative, and climate-resilient agrifood systems.

Australia is pleased to support the first cohort of the AWARD Women in Agriculture Leadership Program Fellowship, connecting 50 women agricultural researchers from six African countries.

Morocco’s participation brings together nine women leaders, including four from partner institutions, strengthening opportunities for women scientists to contribute to agricultural innovation, climate adaptation, and food security.

Implemented by African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) under the Africa–Australia Partnership for Climate Responsive Agriculture, the two-year Fellowship will provide leadership development, mentoring, networking, and opportunities to strengthen gender-responsive approaches to climate adaptation.

We are proud to support women scientists in advancing agricultural research, food security, and climate resilience across Africa.

Thank you to HE Wassane Zailachi, Morocco’s ambassador to Australia, for the kind invitation to a Throne Day reception in Canberra last week. 🇦🇺 🇲🇦

Fortunately, the Australian Ambassador was in Australia, and able to attend this important event, where he offered his best wishes to His Majesty, King Mohammed VI, and the people of Morocco on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of Throne Day.

As this year also marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, Ambassador Donavan presented Ambassador Zailachi with a commemorative coin and cap.

This was a unique occasion to reflect on what’s been achieved over the past half century and to look forward to many more years of cooperation and friendship together.

Through Australia’s Direct Aid Program, Ambassador Damien Donavan had the honour of inaugurating two new school libraries in the Sefrou region, specifically at Ain Sebou Middle School and at Dar Taliba Adrej.

These spaces were designed to give students, especially girls from rural areas, a place to read, learn, explore, and grow. They will also contribute to the ongoing efforts to help reduce school dropout rates in Morocco and encourage education in remote communities.

During the visit, Ambassador Donavan planted a tree at each location, marking a shared investment in the future. Just as the trees will take root and flourish over the years, so too will the aspirations, talents and potential of the students who will learn within these spaces.

The visit was also marked by the warmth and generosity of Moroccan hospitality, and filled with heartfelt exchanges with students, the discovery of the rich cultural heritage of the region, and other meaningful moments that reflect the shared value both Australia and Morocco place on education and opportunity. 📚🇦🇺🇲🇦

For 50 years, NAIDOC Week has celebrated the world’s oldest continuous living culture while recognising the strength, resilience and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
This year’s theme, 50 Years of Deadly, honours the Elders, artists, leaders, communities and young people who have shaped the NAIDOC journey, and those who continue to carry it forward.
As we mark this milestone, swipe through as we look back on some of the Embassy’s favourite moments celebrating First Nations culture, and knowledge with Morocco.
⭐️ Fun fact: In Australian First Nations English slang, ‘Deadly’ = Awesome. It is a term of praise and admiration, often used to compliment someone’s achievements, skills or cultural pride.
