Ambassador Joanne Olivier was delighted to attend Expat Day at Neumünster Abbey, meeting people from the 🇬🇧UK and from all over the world who have chosen to make Luxembourg their home. ➡️🇱🇺

One of the country’s greatest strengths is its ability to bring together people from different backgrounds, languages and cultures. It was great to see the wide range of organisations and services dedicated to helping expats settle in, build new connections and become part of Luxembourg’s diverse society.🏡🌎

Events such as Expat Day highlight the importance of strong and connected communities. It was also wonderful to see ministers, aldermen and local representatives engaging directly with atendees. 👏

Combined with Luxembourg’s warm hospitality and the welcome return of sunshine, it made for a truly enjoyable morning. ☀️

A fantastic celebration of community, integration and belonging.

Ambassador Joanne Olivier was delighted to visit the beautiful and dynamic commune of Niederanven.

A sincere thank you to Mayor Fred Ternes, Alderwoman Josselijn de Vries, Alderman Jacques Bauer and Ms Tamara Schuster for their warm welcome and for the opportunity to learn more about the commune, its organisation and its vibrant and diverse communities. 👏

The visit also highlighted Niederanven’s longstanding ties with the 🇬🇧United Kingdom through its twinning with the town of Sherborne. These connections remain active today and are further strengthened through the Douzelage network, of which Niederanven was a founding member in 1991. Bringing together towns from across Europe, Douzelage promotes friendship, cooperation and mutual understanding between communities.🏘️

A tour of the commune provided an opportunity to discover Niederanven’s impressive infrastructure and forward-looking approach to development. From schools, sporting facilities and housing projects to renewable energy initiatives and the airport, the commune has successfully balanced tradition and modernity while responding to the needs of all generations. 💡

One particularly noteworthy initiative was the “Tiny House” project in Rameldange. Constructed using innovative 3D-printing technology, the 47m2 home is the first of its kind to be built in Luxembourg. It is an excellent example of the commune’s willingness to explore new solutions.🏡

The Ambassador was equally delighted to discover the commune’s natural beauty. With its rolling landscapes, extensive green spaces and exceptional quality of life, the commune offers much to explore. She looks forward to discovering more of the Aarnescht Nature Reserve and the Grünewald Forest, Luxembourg’s largest forest.🌳

Ambassador Joanne Olivier was delighted to make a formal visit to the commune of Bettembourg, in the south of Luxembourg, where she met Mayor Jean Marie Jans, the communal team and Aldermen Alain Gillet and Gusty Graas, who also serves as a Member of the Chamber of Deputies.

During the visit, the Ambassador learned more about Bettembourg's history, development and growing importance as a key transport and logistics hub at the heart of Europe. Home to Vodafone's European logistics hub, whose opening the Ambassador attended, the commune also serves as a vital crossroads for thousands of cross-border workers who contribute to Luxembourg's economy. Its role as a centre of connectivity dates back to 1859, with the opening of the railway line linking Luxembourg and Thionville.🚂

Bettembourg is also home to the Parc Merveilleux, a place cherished by generations of Luxembourgers. Hosting nearly 200 animal species from five continents, it remains one of the country's most popular visitor attractions.🐾

It was great to have the opportunity to meet the mayor and communal team in the Hall des Régies, an innovative building recognised with a Climate Star Award for its sustainable and forward-thinking design. The project stands as an impressive example of the commune's commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable development.🌱

The visit also provided an opportunity to discover Bettembourg's rich cultural life. The Ambassador was particularly interested to learn more about the Prix Laurence, a literary competition for young writers, and was delighted to hear that many submissions are written in English. Encouraging young talent and fostering a love of literature across languages is an initiative well worth celebrating.📚

Ambassador Joanne Olivier was delighted to visit the commune of Mersch, located at the very heart of Luxembourg.

A sincere thank you to Mayor Michel Malherbe, Aldermen Abby Toussaint, Henri Krier and Daniel Marques, as well as Tom Neyens and Jérôme Allard, for their warm welcome and hospitality.

The visit was a great opportunity to learn more about Mersch's history, development, current priorities and vision for the future.

The Ambassador was impressed by Mersch Castle, now the seat of the communal administration. Originally built as a medieval fortress around a keep that still stands today, the site evolved over the centuries into the Renaissance château that remains one of Mersch's most iconic landmarks and a key feature of Luxembourg's famous Valley of the Seven Castles.🏰

Another emblem of Mersch is the Saint-Michel Tower, built in 1707 and recognisable by its striking bulbous roof. Today, the tower serves as the town's tourist office.

Mersch also plays a central role in Luxembourg’s cultural life, notably through the National Literature Centre, established in 1994, and the Mierscher Theater, which the Ambassador was pleased to visit. During her visit, she met the theatre's co-director, Pit Ewen, learned more about its contribution to the communes’ cultural life, and had the opportunity to watch a rehearsal by the Luxembourg National Youth Orchestra.🎼

A sincere thank you to Roland Gaul for an exceptional guided visit to the Schumann’s Eck National Liberation Memorial and along the Sentier du Souvenir in northern Luxembourg.

Following a previous visit with Roland to several RAF memorials and crash sites across Luxembourg, Ambassador Joanne Olivier was delighted to once again benefit from his extensive knowledge of the country’s experience during the Second World War.🇱🇺

This time, the visit focused on the Battle of the Bulge and the fighting that took place in this area in the winter of 1944-1945. The trail through the forest, past preserved foxholes, trenches, reconstructed shelters and other remnants of the battlefield, provided a powerful insight into one of the most significant chapters of Luxembourg's wartime past. It is a landscape that still bears witness to the thousands of lives lost on both sides during the fighting.

Roland's expertise brought this chapter vividly to life. Through his stories, research and personal accounts, he painted a compelling picture of the soldiers and civilians who experienced these dramatic events. His perspective has also been enriched by the many veterans who shared their experiences with him over the years, offering a unique and deeply human view of the realities of conflict.

The visit was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the Second World War and of the importance of preserving these stories for future generations. ⏳

"Churchill! Churchill!" echoed through the streets of Luxembourg on 14 July 1946, exactly 80 years ago, as Sir Winston Churchill visited the Grand Duchy.

Today, we commemorate this historic anniversary.

Taking place barely a year after the end of the Second World War, Churchill’s visit to Luxembourg was a powerful symbol of solidarity at a time when Europe was rebuilding. 🇪🇺 Eighty years later, the principles that underpinned that visit remain as relevant as ever: that peace, security and the freedom of nations cannot be taken for granted, but depend on cooperation, mutual respect and collective resolve.

This anniversary is also a reminder of the enduring friendship between the United Kingdom and Luxembourg, a relationship shaped by shared history and strengthened over time through our shared values.🇱🇺🇬🇧

A monument to Churchill and the UK’s role in the Second World War still stands tall in Luxembourg City: a bronze statue of Sir Winston Churchill in Place Winston Churchill, which was inaugurated in 1973. It was commissioned by the British-Luxembourg Society with the support of the British Embassy, the Grand Ducal Court and the Luxembourg Government.

The Ambassador and British Embassy Luxembourg are dedicated to supporting the United Kingdom’s longstanding commitment to equality and inclusion and reaffirm our support for the LGBTQI+ community in Luxembourg and around the world.🌍

A sincere thank you to the organisers of this year’s Pride, the City of Luxembourg, and the many artists, volunteers and participants whose dedication made the event such a success.

And a special thank you to our Irish colleagues for putting together this year’s Diplomats for Equality float.

🎨For centuries, British artists travelling across Europe on their ‘Grand Tours’ found inspiration in the continent’s landscapes, cultures and people. From Italy to Luxembourg, these artistic exchanges are a reminder of the rich ties that continue to unite us. 🤝

On 3 July, Ambassador Joanne Olivier was delighted to attend the opening of “Grand Tourists to Turner: British Artists in Europe” at Villa Vauban - Musée d'Art de la Ville de Luxembourg, an exhibition organised in collaboration with Tate, London, celebrating the enduring dialogue between British artists and Europe through the centuries.✨🎭

Bringing together works from the Tate’s own collection, the exhibition features paintings and drawings by William Turner and other leading British artists of the 18th and 19th centuries. A special feature of the exhibition is the views of Luxembourg painted by Turner during his two visits to the Grand Duchy in the early 19th century. The exhibition runs until 11 October 2026.🇬🇧🇱🇺

The Ambassador was also honoured to welcome Baroness May and Sir Philip May to the vernissage as part of their wider visit to Luxembourg.

A special thank you to Gregor Muir, Director of Collection at Tate, and David Blayney Brown, Curator of British Art at Tate, for sharing their expertise on the art and legacy of William Turner and other British artists of the period.
