EU-US trade: Parliament approves stronger safeguards for EU industry and farmers.
MEPs have greenlit two pieces of legislation on EU tariff commitments under the EU-US Joint Statement. Parliament aims to balance trade facilitation with protecting the EU’s economic interests, strategic industries and agricultural sector. Learn how in the comments below.
The new adopted pieces of legislation:
🔹 reinforce provisions to ensure fair and balanced implementation in case US fails to respect terms of agreement
🔹 introduce a sunset clause, meaning tariff preferences on industrial and agri-food imports will expire on 31 December 2029 unless renewed
🔹 ensure the Commission will need to make a comprehensive assessment of its trade effects on EU industry, agriculture and small and medium-sized enterprises
🔹 establish clear conditions for tariff reductions on steel and aluminium derivatives.
Once the Council formally adopts it, the regulation will enter into force on the day after its publication in the EU’s Official Journal.

▪️ des procédures plus rapides et plus efficaces, fondées sur des règles communes applicables dans tous les États membres ;
▪️ un principe clair : toute personne faisant l’objet d’une décision de retour est tenue de quitter le territoire de l’Union ;
▪️ la possibilité d’un placement en rétention en cas de risque de fuite ou de menace pour la sécurité, sous le contrôle des autorités ou juridictions compétentes ;

🇪🇺 What one country cannot do alone, Europe can do together.

The EU budget helps finance common priorities. But if Europe wants to do more for its citizens, it also needs stronger and more stable funding.

🪙 That is why Parliament is calling for new revenue sources to help finance the EU budget and repay the Covid-era borrowing.
A stronger Europe needs stronger common financing.

The journalist was awarded the Sakharov Prize together with Mzia Amaglobeli from Georgia in 2025 while both were detained in their countries. Poczobut was released in April 2026.
Andrzej Poczobut will address plenary on Wednesday at noon in a formal sitting.

Known for his outspoken criticism of the Lukashenka regime and his writings on history and human rights, Andrzej Poczobut had been imprisoned since 2021. A member of the Polish minority in Belarus, the journalist was released in a prisoner exchange between Belarus and Poland on 28 April 2026.

At the award ceremony for the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in December 2025, President Roberta Metsola expressed Parliament’s solidarity, stating: "Speaking truth to power must never be a crime."

MEPs will discuss solutions to improve the protection of children and their mental health from risks attached to social media use. The debate is expected to address the negative impact of social media on young people and possible responses, including age limits and stronger EU action to increase the responsibility of online platforms.

Parliament has called for the introduction of a minimum age limit of 16 for access to social media, and has adopted recommendations on better protecting the victims of online harassment and bullying, and strengthening platform accountability.

Parliament is set to adopt annual reports assessing the progress towards EU membership of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Türkiye. The votes will take place on Wednesday.
In draft reports adopted by the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Montenegro and Albania are praised as the front-runners for EU accession. MEPs note Albania’s ambition to close negotiations by the end of 2027, while Montenegro aims to close talks by the end of 2026 and become the 28th EU member state by 2028.
MEPs regret the lack of progress on North Macedonia and reaffirm their support for Bosnia and Herzegovina on the basis of unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. They are also concerned about Kosovo’s inability to form a functioning legislature and government for more than a year.
Georgia and Türkiye continue to experience serious democratic backsliding, MEPs say. Georgia’s EU accession process has effectively halted, while negotiations with Türkiye have been at a standstill since 2018.

Migration is a shared challenge that requires shared solutions.
With clear rules, shared responsibility and democratic oversight, the EU aims to have a system that is both effective and fair.

The new migration pact:
🤝 strengthens cooperation with countries of origin and transit,
🛂 expands legal entry routes,
📋 improves asylum and border procedures,
🧭 creates a more coordinated approach across Europe.

Parliament will now closely monitor implementation, safeguard fundamental rights and scrutinise external migration partnerships to ensure transparency and accountability.

Following a growing number of threats and drone incursions on the eastern border, plenary will debate EU sovereignty and security on Tuesday.
MEPs will be joined by representatives of the Commission and the Cypriot Presidency to discuss how to enhance European air defences. The debate follows recent security incidents and drone incursions attributed to Russia, affecting several EU countries, including Romania, the Baltic states and Finland.
The debate will be wrapped up with a vote on a resolution on Thursday.

On Tuesday, MEPs and EU diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas will discuss recent developments in the ongoing crises in the Middle East and the EU’s role in de-escalation.

Military confrontations across the region have intensified in recent days and weeks, with Israel stepping up its ground operations in Lebanon despite the alleged ceasefire, and Iran attacking Bahrain and Kuwait in response to US strikes on its territory. Meanwhile US-Iran negotiations have so far failed to secure the resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
