In the past few weeks, many people in the Baltic states experienced the kind of anxiety that comes with living next to a warmongering neighbor. In Lithuania for about an hour, aerial threat alerts left many people frightened and sheltering in public shelters; In Latvia the incursions of drones and the government’s inability to shoot them down or even warn people in time even lead to a government collapse; and in Estonia people received threat warnings and an overflying drone was finally shot down.
These types of events have not been a one off, and it is likely that the frequency of these drone threats will increase in the future as it is a great way to spread doubt, fear and terrorise the populace. This having been said, makes the muted responses of the Lithuanian and Latvian governments even more astounding. Not to mention that there is a clear example of an effective threat response by the Estonian government, why do we still allow people to be stressed and afraid?! Fortunately there is a solution!
Further cooperation and centralisation of the Baltic states’defence capabilities would allow for a safer and less fearful life. We urge the governments of the Baltic states to have combined, strict and de-politicized responses in these kinds of situations, and to recheck the safety mechanisms that are in place right now, so they are credible if we will ever need them.
If this kind of an independent, efficient and pan-Baltic aerial threat elimination response be enacted, Lithuanians would not need to worry about drones being allowed to slam into Lithuanian soil, the Latvians would not need to fear another government collapse over ineffective warnings and threat neutralisation and the Estonians could stop worrying about drones coming from the Latvian border.
