Today we celebrate the Day of Finnish Sauna! 🇫🇮

Did you know that according to old Finnish folklore, every sauna has its own guardian spirit, the “sauna elf,” or saunatonttu as we call it?

This small, invisible protector lives quietly in the sauna, watching over the space and the people who use it. If you treat the sauna with respect, the saunatonttu keeps it safe, warm, and peaceful.

But it also has a demanding side. If you behave badly by being loud, careless, or disrespectful, the saunatonttu might get upset.

So, if you ever visit a Finnish sauna, remember to be respectful. You never know who might be there with you 👀

Yesterday, the Nordic and Baltic Embassies gathered to celebrate our National Days jointly, for the first time ever in Vilnius! 💖

This special occasion is an example of the close ties and trust that unite our region. As like-minded friends, the Nordic and Baltic countries share common values and goals, and our strong cooperation is a priority for the security and resilience of our region 🇩🇰 🇪🇪 🇫🇮 🇮🇸 🇱🇻 🇱🇹 🇳🇴 🇸🇪

We were very happy to get to celebrate the day with our dear Lithuanian friends, including Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys, who gave a speech highlighting the many things that unite us.

🇫🇮 Honouring the Finnish Defence Forces 🇫🇮

Yesterday, we celebrated the Flag Day of the Finnish Defence Forces, an occasion that recognizes the dedication and service of Finland’s military personnel. The day commemorates the birthday of Marshal Mannerheim, whose legacy continues to hold a special place in our history.

We also bid farewell to our Defence Attaché, Captain ( N ) Heikki Lamminen, and welcomed his successor, Colonel Vesa Tuunainen. Thank you for everything, Heikki, and welcome, Vesa! 💙

Happy International Day of Potato! 🥔

In both Finnish and Lithuanian cuisines, potatoes are a staple used in countless dishes: boiled, mashed, baked, fried, grated, stuffed, and everything in between.

To celebrate, here are two traditional dishes as examples of the many ways our countries enjoy their potatoes:

🌿 Finland: Uudet perunat (new potatoes)
A true sign of summer, these early-harvest potatoes are prized for their delicate flavor and thin skins. Gently boiled and served with butter and fresh dill, they highlight how potatoes can shine even in their simplest form.

✈️ Lithuania: Cepelinai (Zeppelins)
Cepelinai are large potato dumplings named for their airship-like shape. Typically filled with meat, they’re served with sour cream and bacon sauce. Rich, filling, and iconic, they’re a cornerstone of Lithuanian cuisine.

Different approaches, but one shared love for potatoes ❤️

20 years ago today, Lordi made Eurovision history with Hard Rock Hallelujah, securing Finland’s first, and so far, only victory in the contest 🇫🇮 🎸

🤘 It was a turning point that proved hard rock has a place on the Eurovision stage! Fittingly, Lordi returned to the Eurovision Grand Final stage again this past Saturday, reminding us all why that victory remains so iconic.

🔥 This year, Finland kept the energy alive with an incredible performance, finishing 6th with "Liekinheitin" by Pete Parkkonen and Linda Lampenius; a powerful show that proves Finland continues to bring bold and unique talent to Eurovision!
