Intimate partner violence is not an isolated incident.

In 2022, eight EU Member States recorded over 212,000 offences of intimate partner violence against women, involving more than 146,000 victims.

That’s an average of 1.5 offences per victim — violence is often repeated, not “one off”.
Yet even these figures likely underestimate reality. In several countries, only the most serious offence is recorded, leaving other violent acts invisible.

Avoiding the “single offence” approach matters — because it creates a dark figure in what gets counted, and what gets acted on.

Better data helps reveal reality. And reality must guide policy

⚖️ Now more than ever, the rule of law matters.

Knowing that the rules apply equally to everyone, regardless of gender, origin, status, race, age, religion or anything else, lets people live with confidence – from signing a job contract to renting a home or speaking freely in public.

When the rule of law is strong, rights are respected. People are protected from abuse of power, treated fairly and given equal access to justice and public services.

This is why, as the rule of law comes under increasing pressure, it’s so important to protect it. Doing so means protecting people’s ability to live their lives, defend their rights, and be part of a system that works for everyone.

That is what the rule of law really is – the infrastructure that allows society to move forward. Together.

Today, we welcomed officials and experts from Ukraine and the Netherlands for an exchange on advancing the Women, Peace and Security Agenda. 🇺🇦 🇪🇺

Representatives from Ukrainian ministries, public institutions, civil society and academia came together to share practical experiences on gender equality and security policies in Lithuania and across the EU, supporting the implementation of Ukraine’s III National Action Plan.

Ukraine is working towards a more equal and just future, and we are proud to support this journey alongside our partners every step of the way.

At the same time, EIGE Director Carlien Scheele met with Olesia Bondar from the Ukrainian Women’s Fund to discuss the development of a Gender Equality Index for Ukraine based on EIGE’s methodology.

On Global Day of Parents, we celebrate and thank parents everywhere for all they do – the seen and the unseen – despite how challenging it can be.

Yet the impact of care responsibilities is still not shared equally.

In 2023, employment rates for women with young children were 10.5 percentage points lower than for women without children. In contrast, employment rates for men with young children were 8.2 percentage points higher than for men without children.

Parenthood should never come at the expense of equality.

We always say gender equality does not move forward in silos. This week’s country visit to Greece couldn't have fine-tuned that fact more.

With a delegation led by EIGE's Director Carlien Scheele members from Greek government, parliament, equality bodies, human rights institutions, civil society, researchers and the media focused on what it takes to move the needle on gender equality in a profound and lasting way.

We come away with a granular understanding of the realities, challenges and opportunities Greece has at its disposal for advancing gender equality.

And from there, strategic ways to strengthen our cooperation with government entities, civil society, independent bodies and the media ahead of Greece’s upcoming EU Presidency and beyond.

Period poverty is still not a thing of the past.

Menstrual Hygiene Day is an important reminder of that.

It remains a reality for many women and girls in the EU according to our data from the Beijing Platform for Action + 30 report.

It’s not just about accessing menstrual products.

Period poverty also includes access to safe sanitation facilities and menstrual education. Its impacts go even further – affecting health, dignity and opportunities to fully participate in education, work and society.

Over 30 years after the Beijing Platform for Action was established, advancing women’s health, rights and equal participation remain as important as ever.
