Driving in Vilnius? Here's everything you need to know before hitting the road. 🚗
Whether you're buying from a dealer or a private seller, getting your car registered and insured in Lithuania is straightforward — if you know the steps.

Buying from a dealer? They handle the registration for you. Easy.

Buying from a private seller? You'll need to register the ownership change yourself through Regitra — this applies to foreign citizens living or working in Lithuania too. Before registration, make sure your vehicle is already inspected and insured.

Two things to keep in mind:
All vehicles must pass a technical inspection every two years (Regitra handles this), and all vehicles must be insured through a Lithuanian insurance company.

→ BTA Draudimas
→ Gjensidige
→ Lietuvos Draudimas
Prices vary by company, so it's worth comparing before you commit.

School applications don’t have to feel overwhelming 📚

Here’s the important part: public education in Vilnius is free, international families are welcome, and there are multiple language options across the city.

So, how does it work?

➡️ Applications to public schools are submitted through the centralized Vilnius system VMSA: https://svietimas.vilnius.lt/page/school
➡️ No residence permit yet? You can still apply directly via Vilnius City Municipality: [email protected]
➡️ Main admissions usually happen between February and May, with additional admissions throughout summer and the school year if places are available.

🕵️‍♂️Important for families applying to Lithuanian primary schools for the first time: if your child has a temporary or permanent residence permit and hasn’t studied in Lithuania before, you can choose up to 3 municipal schools teaching in Lithuanian — but one of them must be your local school based on your registered address.

Before submitting your application, prepare:
✔️ Parent’s full name
✔️ Address, email, and phone number
✔️ Child’s full name and date of birth
✔️ Preferred school + language of instruction
✔️ Copies of IDs, visas, and other relevant documents
