President Boakai Pays Courtesy Visit to Former Lonestar Player and Coach Josiah N. Johnson, alias JNJ ~ Says He Admires People Who Have Contributed to the Country

Bardnesville, Gardnesville Township: President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., yesterday, paid a courtesy visit to former Lonestar Player and Coach Josiah Nils Johnson, stating that his visit is in recognition of the contributions of the former player towards sports, particularly soccer development in Liberia.

“I admire the people who have contributed to the development of sports in Liberia. That is why I am here today to recognize and give back to those who have made contributions to the Liberian sporting community,” he remarked.

President Boakai averred that despite the fact that he has never been a sport athlete himself, his visit was also prompted by his interest in developing Liberia's next generation of athletes.

“I never lived a childhood life devoted to sports owing to the fact that all my life has been saddled with my work and other responsibilities imposed on me by circumstances,” the Liberian Leader explained.

As a result he said, as much as he loved sports greatly, he did not have the opportunity to play. That, he pointed out, did not mean that he was disinterested in sports. President Boakai employed the adage that, “If you don't remember the past, there is no way you can get prepared for the future.”

The President, on behalf of the Government and every Liberian, lauded the invaluable contributions made by the veteran footballer.

“We have not forgotten you. The Country has not forgotten. We remember your invaluable contributions to this country that you gave without adequate compensation. We appreciate you,” he noted.

As part of the President’s visit, he made personal contribution to the well-being of Mr. Josiah N. Johnson and promised to serve as an immediate solution to some of the pressing challenges faced by the legendary sports leader.

For his part, the former National Team Midfielder, who played between 1958 - 1971, and later served as Head Coach of the Lonestar between 1971 - 1979, winning the Six Nations Tournament over the Black Star of Ghana, Mr. Josiah N. Johnson lauded President Boakai for the visit and the exemplary leadership in steering the affairs of the nation.

Acknowledging the President, Coach JNJ said, “Here your flower is given you. My entire family is appreciative of your visit and your leadership. We are grateful for this visit and it's going to be remembered through out my family history.”

Mr. Josiah Nils Johnson further appreciated the President for the development initiatives ongoing in South-Eastern Liberia, stating that “I am also happy because of the road connections ongoing in my home and other parts of the South-East.

People can now leave from Maryland and pass through Sinoe and then to Grand Bassa, onward to Monrovia in about a day. We are grateful.”

Meanwhile, President Boakai’s Administration through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, during the tenure of then Minister Cllr. Jerror Cole Bangalu, initiated a token sponsorship program for all former Lonestar players under the canopy “Former Lonestar Players Association.”

The Association under the chairmanship of former Lonestar defender Washington Blay, who made the disclosure, is receiving subsidiaries from government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports Budget. He expressed the prayerful hope that there will come increments in the amount, considering the multitudes of personal life challenges facing retired national football team players.

Providence Baptist Church, Ashmun Street, Monrovia: President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has paid a moving tribute to the late Flight Captain Moses K. Weefur Jr., describing his passing as a profound loss to Liberia’s aviation sector.

Speaking during funeral rites for the late Captain Weefur, held at the Providence Baptist Church on Ashmum Street, President Boakai averred that Captain Weefur Jr., whose professional career spanned more than five decades, contributed significantly to the development of Liberia's aviation sector and public institutions.

“We have lost a committed Liberian whose career was defined by dedication, discipline to the aviation sector,” the President remarked, recalling that the late seasoned Flight Captain served in several senior capacities during his distinguished career, most recently as Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), where he brought decades of experience in flight operations, aviation management and safety to the advancement of Liberia's aviation sector.

Captain Weefur also served as Presidential Pilot and Chief Executive Officer of the Executive Airwing under the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs, where he was entrusted with the operation of VIP and presidential aircraft.

His professional journey further included senior assignments with Liberia's aviation institutions, including the Liberia Civil Aviation Authority and Air Liberia, as well as aviation organizations in Nigeria and the United States. His extensive experience in flight operations, technical administration and aviation safety earned him recognition as one of Liberia's accomplished aviation professionals.

Beyond his professional accomplishments in his service to country, Captain Weefur's passing carries a deeply personal meaning for President Boakai. The two shared a friendship that began during their formative years at the College of West Africa, where they were high school classmates and dormitory mates.

Reflecting on their days, President Boakai said, “He was a friend with whom I shared some of the formative years of my life, and his passing is therefore a deeply personal loss,” recalling a friendship that endured for decades.

Captain Moses K. Weefur Jr. died on August 5, 2026, at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy of more than five decades of service to Liberia and the aviation profession.

Executive Mansion, Monrovia: President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has received the outgoing and incoming leadership of the Ministry of Justice and the Office of the Solicitor General for a courtesy and transition meeting aimed at ensuring a smooth and orderly transfer of responsibilities.

The meeting brought together outgoing Minister of Justice Cllr. Oswald N. Tweh, outgoing Solicitor General Cllr. Augustine Fayiah, incoming Minister of Justice Cllr. Betty Lamine Blamo, and incoming Solicitor General Cllr. Abraham B. Sillah.

The meeting was held to promote alignment between the outgoing and incoming teams and to ensure continuity in the discharge of the Government’s legal responsibilities.

Following discussions with the President, the outgoing Minister of Justice and Solicitor General agreed to remain in their respective positions for a period of one week to facilitate a proper handover, briefing, and onboarding process.

During the one-week transition period, the outgoing officials will continue to perform their respective functions while working closely with the incoming team. They will provide briefings on ongoing matters, critical issues, and other responsibilities of the Ministry and ensure that the incoming officials are adequately familiarized with the work of the Ministry.

The President emphasized the importance of a smooth transition, open communication, and continued engagement between the outgoing and incoming officials to ensure that government business remains uninterrupted.

The parties agreed that the transition will include regular meetings between them, the preparation of proper handover notes, and the continued availability of the outgoing team to provide guidance and institutional knowledge.

As part of the onboarding process, the incoming officials will be taken through the Ministry’s operations, introduced to key personnel, and familiarized with the status of ongoing work and responsibilities.

The outgoing officials expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve the Government and people of Liberia, welcoming the opportunity to support the incoming leadership during the transition.

Incoming Justice Minister Cllr. Betty Lamine Blamo expressed appreciation for the opportunity to work with the outgoing leadership, noting the importance of learning from their experience and ensuring a seamless transition.

The meeting further recognized that those serving in Government must remain focused on doing their best for the country and ensuring that public responsibilities continue to be carried out effectively.

The President’s engagement with the outgoing and incoming Justice Ministry leadership forms part of efforts to ensure continuity, institutional stability, and an effective onboarding process as the Government transitions to its new legal leadership.

The outgoing and incoming officials are expected to remain engaged throughout the one week transition period and continue working together in the interest of the Government and the Liberian people.

Executive Mansion, Monrovia: – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has made several appointments in Government, affecting the Ministries of Justice, Gender, Children and Social Protection, and Local Government.

The appointments also affect the Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC) and the National Transit Authority (NTA).

At the Ministry of Justice, Cllr. Betty M. Lamin-Blamo has been appointed Minister of Justice, while Cllr. Abrahim Boimah Sillah, Sr. has been appointed Solicitor General.

Outgoing Minister Oswald N. Tweh and outgoing Solicitor General Augustine Fayiah are to be reassigned to other levels of government.

At the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Ms. Angel M. Morris has been
appointed Deputy Minister for Public Affairs, while Mr. Harrison K. Sorsor has been appointed Assistant Minister for Research, Policy and Planning.

Meanwhile, Mr. Alex Chersia Grant has been appointed Commissioner of the Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC)

At the Ministry of Local Government, Mr. Christopher Ben Bailey has been appointed Superintendent of Grand Gedeh County.

For the National Transit Authority, Mr. Benedict Yeke Harleysion, Sr. has been reappointed Chairman of the Board.

The appointments form part of the President’s ongoing efforts to strengthen key institutions of Government and enhance the effective delivery of public services.

Where applicable, nominees will be subject to Senate confirmation.

Liberia Takes First Step Toward Carbon Markets as President Boakai Receives National Carbon Policy

Executive Mansion, Monrovia: President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has received Liberia’s new National Carbon Policy, marking an important first step toward the country’s structured participation in carbon markets, carbon trading, and climate finance.

The policy emerged from an extensive national consultation and consensus-building process involving forest-dependent communities, civil society organizations, government institutions, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and members of the Legislature.

It establishes a national framework to guide Liberia’s participation in the rapidly evolving global carbon economy, including the roles and responsibilities of government institutions in carbon-market activities and climate finance.

The policy is also intended to ensure that Liberia’s engagement in the carbon economy is guided by national interests, transparency, and broad stakeholder participation.

Receiving the policy document, President Boakai commended the extensive consultations and technical work that led to the consensus, describing the process as a reflection of a shared commitment to Liberia’s future.

The President said the policy provides an important foundation for ensuring that Liberia’s forests, which play a critical role in absorbing carbon and addressing climate change, generate meaningful benefits for the country and the communities that live alongside and help protect them.

President Boakai stressed that Liberia must find ways to ensure that its natural resources create tangible benefits for its people, particularly forest communities that have historically depended on and protected the country’s forests.

He said the development of a national carbon policy could provide a more structured pathway for Liberia to attract climate finance, participate in carbon-market transactions, and support conservation and climate-related development initiatives.

The Liberian Leader also called for greater confidence in Liberian expertise, noting that the country has capable professionals who, when given the opportunity and responsibility, can make meaningful contributions to national development.

He cautioned against allowing prolonged discussions to delay action, stressing that while the policy can be reviewed and improved over time, Liberia must begin with an agreed-upon framework.

“There are amendments we will make, but we have to have something done for now, and that’s what we have to do,” the President pointed out.

President Boakai particularly acknowledged the Environmental Protection Agency and the technical team that contributed to the development of the policy, describing their efforts as evidence of Liberia’s growing capacity to address complex national and international issues.

The President further emphasized that national decision-making requires leaders to act in the best interest of the country, even when it may not be possible to satisfy every individual or stakeholder.

He noted that those entrusted with leadership must make decisions based on what they believe is right and beneficial for Liberia.

The National Carbon Policy is expected to serve as a foundation for Liberia’s future engagement with carbon markets and climate finance, while strengthening national coordination and ensuring that the benefits of the country’s natural resources contribute to sustainable development and the well-being of its people.

South Africa Pledges High-Powered Technical Mission to Support Liberia’s Peace and Reconciliation Museum

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA:— The Government of South Africa has pledged to send a fully funded, high-powered technical, tourism and cultural delegation to Liberia to support the establishment of a proposed National Peace, Reconciliation and Memorial Museum.

The commitment was made during high-level discussions between South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Hon. Gayton McKenzie, and Liberia’s Minister of State without Portfolio, Hon. Hadja Mamaka Bility, who led a delegation appointed and dispatched by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. as part of his Administration’s broader efforts to advance national peace, reconciliation, historical preservation and healing.

Minister McKenzie directed that the South African mission include senior experts from the country’s leading museums, memorial sites, archives, cultural institutions, artifact-repatriation initiatives and institutions with experience in South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission process.

The delegation will travel to Monrovia to conduct technical workshops, share expertise and support Liberia in developing credible systems for collecting, preserving and presenting the country’s history while maintaining the truth and integrity of its past.

Welcoming the commitment, Minister Bility said Liberia looks forward to working closely with the South African Government and its technical institutions as the museum initiative moves toward implementation.

She said the planned South African mission will coincide with efforts to convene the inaugural steering committee for the proposed museum, creating an opportunity for several days of intensive technical engagement between Liberian and South African experts.

Minister McKenzie described Liberia and South Africa as “brother and sister nations,” recalling Liberia’s historic support for South African freedom fighters during the anti-apartheid struggle.

“We are not going there only to teach. We are also going there to learn from the Liberians,” Minister McKenzie said, emphasizing that the planned engagement would be based on mutual learning and cooperation.

During the four-day South African phase of the study tour, the Liberian delegation held discussions with senior officials responsible for planning, monitoring and evaluation, as well as representatives of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

The delegation also met with the leadership of the University of South Africa (UNISA), where both sides agreed to explore opportunities for knowledge-sharing, specialized training and postgraduate education for Liberians in museum development, archives, peacebuilding and reconciliation.

As part of the tour, the delegation visited the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Hector Pieterson Museum, Mandela House, Freedom Park, Apartheid Museum, UNDP South Africa and other major cultural and historical institutions.

UNDP Resident Representative in Liberia, Ambassador Aliou Mamadou Dia, described the outcome of the engagement as a major boost to Liberia’s museum initiative and reaffirmed UNDP’s support for the Government of Liberia.

The South African commitment follows the successful completion of the Rwanda and South Africa phases of the study tour undertaken by the delegation at the direction of President Boakai.

The delegation is expected to return to Liberia to brief President Boakai on the outcome of the engagements, consolidate lessons from the study tour and begin preparations for the arrival of the South African technical mission.

The proposed National Peace, Reconciliation and Memorial Museum forms part of President Boakai’s broader reconciliation efforts to preserve Liberia’s history, promote national healing and provide present and future generations with an accurate account of the country’s past.
