Minister of Education Challenges Stella Maris Graduates to Make Their Education Count

679 graduates of Stella Maris Polytechnic University, including 461 females and 218 males, celebrated the completion of their studies at the University’s 27th Commencement Convocation on Friday.

Serving as Convocation Orator, Minister of Education Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah congratulated the Class of 2026 and the families, lecturers, mentors, and supporters whose sacrifices helped bring them to graduation.

She challenged the graduates to take their education beyond the degree, using research, innovation, integrity, and professional excellence to solve problems, strengthen institutions, improve communities, and contribute to Liberia’s development.

The Minister also encouraged them to remain adaptable and committed to lifelong learning as their careers evolve, emphasizing that success should ultimately be measured by the difference their knowledge and work make.

“Titles tell us where you sat. Impact tells us what happened because you were there.”

The Ministry of Education congratulates the Stella Maris Polytechnic University Class of 2026 and wishes them well as they take their skills, ideas, and leadership into Liberia’s classrooms, businesses, institutions, communities, and economy.

24 LIBERIAN TVET PROFESSIONALS DEPART FOR ADVANCED INTERNATIONAL TRAINING

Twenty-four Liberian Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) professionals have departed for advanced training in Kenya and Ghana under the European Union-funded Youth Rising Project, implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

The approximately 18-month training programs will strengthen their technical, pedagogical, and professional competencies in areas directly linked to Liberia’s skills-development and workforce needs.

Participants traveling to Kenya will pursue specialized training in Culinary Arts, Event Management, and Hospitality Operations, while those assigned to Ghana will undertake advanced studies in Welding and Fabrication and Fashion Design.

Speaking at the pre-departure ceremony, Minister of Education Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah thanked the European Union and UNIDO for their continued partnership and described the initiative as an important investment in Liberia’s human capital.

She emphasized that the value of the training will be seen when participants return and apply their knowledge within Liberia’s TVET institutions, strengthening instruction and transferring skills to other instructors and students.

Upon completion, the beneficiaries are expected to serve in selected TVET institutions across the country.

The initiative supports the Ministry of Education’s TVET priority by strengthening the quality of technical instruction and expanding the pool of skilled professionals needed to prepare young Liberians for employment, entrepreneurship, and national development.

Liberia Marks 179th National Flag Day with Renewed Focus on Citizenship

Liberia today celebrated its 179th National Flag Day under the theme, “From Heritage to Hope: The Flag That Unites Us,” bringing together national leaders, students, educators and citizens to reflect on what the Lone Star represents and the responsibilities that come with being Liberian.

The celebration began at the Barclay Training Center, where students raised the flag and participated in competitive drills and a Pass-in-Review before the official program at the Executive Pavilion.

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. called on Liberians to move beyond pledging allegiance to the flag and live the values behind that pledge through respect for the law, discipline, peaceful coexistence and putting Liberia above personal, political and other divisions. He also challenged young Liberians to reject drugs and protect their futures.

One of the day’s major moments came in education. Minister of Education Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah officially announced the return of Civics Education to Liberia’s primary schools and launched standardized Civics textbooks.

The goal is to ensure that children learn more than Liberia’s national symbols. They should understand their country, their rights and responsibilities, and the values of honesty, integrity and responsible citizenship.

Flag Day Orator and Minister of Finance and Development Planning Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan reinforced that message, challenging Liberians to translate patriotism into service, integrity and accountability, while rejecting corruption, stereotyping and political division.

As Liberia moves from heritage to hope, today’s message was clear: respecting the Lone Star must also mean taking responsibility for the Republic it represents.

Happy 179th National Flag Day!

The Republic we hope to build tomorrow is already sitting in our classrooms today.

That is why the Ministry of Education is returning Civics Education to primary schools; so that Liberian children will know the flag, understand the country for which it stands, and develop the honesty, integrity, knowledge, and sense of responsibility needed to care for that country.

As we celebrate our national symbol today, the Ministry reaffirms its commitment to helping raise informed, responsible, and patriotic citizens.

LIBERIA SETS 2027 AFTRA HOSTING IN MOTION AS TEACHER REFORM AGENDA ADVANCES

Liberia has formally begun preparations to host the 2027 African Federation for Teaching Regulatory Authorities (AFTRA) Conference, following the inaugural meeting of the national Steering Committee responsible for coordinating the continental gathering.

Convened by the Ministry of Education, the meeting brought together representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Transport and State, the Liberia Immigration Service, the Liberia National Police, Ministry of Health, LTA, the Liberia National Tourism Authority, and other institutions whose support will be required to receive and coordinate delegates from across Africa.

For Liberia, the conference comes at an important point in the Ministry’s work to strengthen the teaching profession. Minister of Education Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah highlighted the country’s ongoing push toward teacher certification and licensing, noting that Liberia can draw practical lessons from African countries that already have established regulatory systems.

The Minister emphasized that stronger regulation of the profession is essential to improving standards, accountability, teacher development, and confidence in the quality of education delivered to learners.

Hosting AFTRA will place Liberia at the center of continental discussions on teacher regulation, professional development, mobility, quality assurance, and the future of the profession, while giving the country an opportunity to deepen partnerships and accelerate reforms already underway at home.

The Steering Committee will now coordinate the national preparations required to host the 2027 conference and associated executive meetings.

LIBERIA WELCOMES NEW PEACE CORPS VOLUNTEERS AS MINISTER JALLAH URGES THEM TO “GO FIRST AS LEARNERS”

Minister of Education Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah has welcomed a new cohort of Peace Corps Volunteers to Liberia, encouraging them to approach their service with humility, openness, and respect for the communities where they will work.

Speaking at the Peace Corps Volunteers’ Swearing-In Ceremony at Monrovia City Hall, Minister Jallah congratulated the volunteers on completing ten weeks of pre-service training and reminded them that their most important learning will continue in the communities to which they are assigned.

“Go first as learners,” she told the volunteers, urging them to listen, build relationships, and work alongside Liberian teachers, education officials, health workers, parents, students, and community leaders.

For volunteers assigned to schools, the Minister emphasized the importance of working as partners with the people already serving within Liberia’s education system, rather than approaching communities with the assumption that they have come to provide all the answers.

She also called on County and District Education Officers, school administrators, and local stakeholders to receive the volunteers as colleagues and support their integration into the communities where they will serve.

Minister Jallah reflected on the longstanding relationship between Liberia and the Peace Corps and expressed appreciation to the organization and the Government and people of the United States for their continued partnership.

She encouraged the newly sworn-in volunteers to serve with integrity, cultural sensitivity, and a genuine willingness to learn, while contributing meaningfully to the schools and communities they will call home during their service.

Government Delivers New Beh Town Public School in Bomi County

Seven months after breaking ground, the Government of Liberia has completed and officially turned over the Beh Town Public School in Dewoin District, Bomi County, providing the community with improved classrooms, more than 200 student chairs, whiteboards, and a better environment for teaching and learning.

The new school is part of the Ministry of Education’s wider effort to ensure that more children can access and benefit from public education. Registration from Kindergarten through Grade 6 is now free, removing an important financial barrier for families. Bomi is also one of seven priority counties under the Back to My Classroom Campaign, which is working to return out-of-school children to education.

At the dedication, Minister of Education Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah joined county and district authorities, traditional leaders, teachers, parents, students, and community members in formally handing the facility over for use.

With the school now completed, the Ministry’s work continues through teacher support, stronger school management, and measures to help children enroll, attend regularly, and progress in their education.

Beh Town reflects the broader direction of the Ministry’s reform agenda: investing in public schools while removing the barriers that prevent children from accessing and benefiting from education.

Meet Our National Orator

As Liberia prepares to commemorate the 179th National Flag Day Anniversary, we are pleased to introduce this year’s National Orator, Hon. Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, Minister of Finance and Development Planning.

The national observance will take place on Monday, August 24, 2026, under the theme:

“From Heritage to Hope: The Flag That Unites Us.”

Activities begin at 6:00 a.m. at the Barclay Training Center with the National Flag Hoisting Ceremony, competitive drill activities and Pass-in-Review, followed by the official indoor program at the Executive Pavilion at 10:00 a.m.
