The National Young Women Political Council of Liberia (NYWPCL) on Monday, May 25, 2026, signed a €60,000 sub-grant agreement with the Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation to implement the European Union-funded Liberia Project (“PeaceGen: The Generation of Peace”) over a three-year period (2026–2029) in five counties: Montserrado, Nimba, B**g, Bomi, and Sinoe.
The signing ceremony was held at the WIPNET Peace Hut in Monrovia.
The PEACEGEN Liberia project is a timely and strategic intervention aimed at strengthening youth and women’s participation in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and transitional justice processes in Liberia.
Despite Liberia’s progress in sustaining peace and democratic governance, many young people, particularly young women, remain underrepresented in peace, governance, and transitional justice processes. Limited inclusion, economic frustrations, and weak civic engagement continue to create vulnerabilities that can undermine social cohesion and sustainable peace.
The project recognizes that sustainable reconciliation, accountability, and national healing cannot be achieved without meaningful youth and women participation. PeaceGen therefore seeks to create safe, inclusive, and empowering spaces where young people and women can actively contribute to shaping Liberia’s peace and development agenda.
Through this €60,000 sub-grant, NYWPCL will lead grassroots advocacy, awareness, and engagement initiatives that support the implementation of Liberia’s National Action Plan (NAP) on Youth, Peace and Security (YPS). The project aligns with the NAP’s commitment to promoting youth participation, protection, prevention, partnerships, disengagement and reintegration, and coordinated action as critical pillars for sustaining peace and preventing violence in Liberia.
Under the project, NYWPCL will empower young people to serve as Youth, Peace and Security Ambassadors (YPSAs) through leadership development, mentorship, and capacity-building initiatives. These ambassadors will lead awareness campaigns, facilitate community dialogues to amplify youth voices, promote reconciliation, and strengthen peace narratives across the target counties.
The project’s implementation in Montserrado, Nimba, B**g, Bomi, and Sinoe counties will strengthen grassroots peacebuilding efforts while ensuring the inclusion of both rural and urban youth voices in national conversations around peace, governance, and transitional justice.
As part of the initiative, NYWPCL will also host an Annual Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) Conference in Nimba County. The conference will serve as a national platform for reviewing progress, sharing experiences and best practices, mobilizing collective advocacy, strengthening partnerships, synthesizing recommendations into a conference resolution, and promoting peace, reconciliation, and cultural exchange through youth-led and community-centered activities.
The initiative aims to strengthen youth leadership, promote social cohesion, increase public awareness, and expand youth and women’s participation in national peace and governance processes. The project will also establish a sustainable network of trained Youth, Peace and Security Ambassadors who will continue advocacy and community engagement efforts beyond the life of the project through local ownership, partnerships, and community-driven action.
The President of the NYWPCL, Madam Laura Targbeh signed the grant agreement and appreciated the partnership and support of the Kvinna till Kvinna, Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia and the European Union in Liberia for investing in youth and women-led peacebuilding initiatives in Liberia. This support reflects a shared commitment to empowering the next generation of peacebuilders and advancing inclusive and sustainable peace.
As a leading young women-led organization committed to leadership, advocacy, and grassroots mobilization, NYWPCL remains dedicated to ensuring that young women and youth are not only beneficiaries of peace, but active leaders in building a more inclusive, democratic, resilient, and peaceful Liberia.
NYWPCL believes that empowering young people and women as peacebuilders today is essential to securing a more just, united, and peaceful Liberia for future generations.
