Militants of the Vanguard Student Unification Party; distinguished university students and students of the University of Liberia; our brothers and sisters from the various high schools across Monrovia and beyond; student leaders, activists, teachers, members of the press; and fellow Liberians, we bring you warm, fraternal greetings from the revolutionary Vanguard Student Unification Party.

The revolutionary Vanguard Student Unification Party calls on the Government of Liberia to immediately renovate public schools across the country and establish a comprehensive system to support students transitioning from high school to university. We also call on students, teachers, parents and civil society to unite in a nationwide demand for quality, accessible and affordable education.

Across Liberia, thousands of students continue to learn in overcrowded, dilapidated and poorly equipped classrooms. Many lack adequate furniture, laboratories, libraries, sanitation, electricity, internet connectivity and basic instructional materials. These conditions undermine the quality of education and threaten the future of young people as well as Liberia in general.

Liberia’s educational crisis cannot be addressed through empty speeches, fake promises or temporary interventions. Across the country, many public schools continue to operate in unacceptable conditions, with insufficient instructional materials, as well as other challenges that undermine effective learning.

Therefore, SUP calls on the Government of Liberia to launch an urgent nationwide renovation program targeting public schools, particularly schools serving vulnerable communities. All Liberian children deserve a safe, functional and inspiring environment to learn.
Beyond these challenges, thousands of students who successfully complete high school are unable to enter university because of poverty, graduation expenses, transportation costs, tuition, textbooks and the absence of adequate scholarships and transitional support.

High school graduation should never become the end of a Liberian student’s educational journey. The revolutionary Vanguard Student Unification Party recognizes that secondary and tertiary education are interconnected. A student entering Fendall or Capitol Hill today was yesterday’s high school student, while a student struggling in an overcrowded classroom today is potentially tomorrow’s doctor, teacher, engineer, scientist, entrepreneur or national leader.
When a qualified student is forced to abandon education because of poverty, Liberia loses a student, but more than this, it loses a potential talent and national leadership.
The revolutionary Vanguard Student Unification Party demands the Government to establish a national High School-to-University Transition Program, providing scholarships, career guidance, financial assistance and other support for qualified students, particularly those from disadvantaged communities.

Fast forward, the Student Unification Party demands a nationwide public-school renovation program that prioritizes safe classrooms, laboratories, libraries, sanitation, electricity, clean water, furniture, internet connectivity and essential learning materials. Education must serve as a national investment and a guaranteed pathway to opportunity, instead of empty slogans that offer nothing concrete.

The Student Unification Party calls on every high school student and all student activists present today to understand that they are part of this movement, which is the change that Liberia needs. This day marks the beginning of a new era in Liberian student activism, as it unites secondary and tertiary education students under one umbrella to demand an educational system that is accessible, affordable, safe, properly funded and capable of preparing our young people for the future.

The Student Unification Party remains the lone voice of the students and broader masses of Liberia. Rooted in the historic tradition of student activism and popular struggle, SUP will continue to organize, educate and advocate for social justice, academic freedom, quality education, democracy and peace. We believe education must liberate, empower and transform society. As long as injustice persists, SUP will remain on the side of the students and the people, staying principled, organized and unyielding in the struggle for a better Liberia.

REF 21: SUP Condemns the Dictatorial Memo Jointly Issued by Maparyan and the Board of Trustees; Calls on ULFA and ULSA to Resist; and Re-emphasizes the Dismissal of Lester Tenny and August 25th Protest!

Fellow students and compatriots, the revolutionary Vanguard Student Unification Party issues this decisive statement as a follow up on its press statement issued on August 13, where we categorically demanded the immediate dismissal of the Vice President for Fiscal Affairs and Finance, Lester Tenny, and strongly reprimanded Maparyan for offering false hopes to the student body and the Liberian public. Our stance remains completely unchanged and uncompromising. Yesterday, we called upon the resilient student body of the University of Liberia to remain vigilant and assemble on the University's campus on August 25th to demand a genuine, fully resolved,
and functional reopening of our noble institution. However, instead of soberly reflecting upon their administrative failures and engaging in honest, constructive dialogue with the aggrieved Faculty and Staff, the leadership of the University of Liberia has chosen to escalate its campaign of disrespect and authoritarianism through another reckless administrative maneuver.

Just today, the University's administration, in collusion with the Board of Trustees, issued a heavy-handed memo signed jointly by Maparyan and the illegitimate Chairman of the Board of Trustees, unilaterally mandating all members of the Faculty and Staff to report to work on August 17th. The Vanguard Student Unification Party views this directive as the highest level of administrative disrespect, institutional arrogance and blatant provocation against the University of Liberia Faculty Association and the University of Liberia Staff Association. It is completely absurd, illogical and condescending to believe that a severe, ongoing institutional standoff rooted in legitimate labor grievances, unpaid benefits and administrative misconduct can be resolved by issuing dictatorial commands. You cannot treat esteemed intellectuals and dedicated staff like your children, ignore their well-founded demands, ignore a vote of no confidence and then arbitrarily order them back into the classrooms as if their dignity and rights do not matter.

This dictatorial posture that is being displayed by Maparyan and the Board of Trustees is a complete lack of leadership capacity that speaks volumes about how disconnected they are from the realities of the University. Maparyan and her kangaroo Board of Trustees confidant must understand that the University of Liberia is not a military training ground where a commander can just issue unilateral mandates and expect blind loyalty from academics and professionals. Whenever crises arise in serious academic institutions, they are resolved through humility, transparency and the concrete settlement of grievances. Dictatorial approaches do nothing to restore normal academic activities; on the contrary, they make situations worse, and in this case, unnecessarily delay the resumption of classes.

Furthermore, SUP takes specific aim at the counterfeit Chairman of the Board of Trustees, whose signature on this controversial directive is both an insult and an administrative farce. We categorically and unapologetically state today that Numene Bartekwa lacks the legal authority, moral standing and institutional legitimacy to issue mandates to the university community. He is an illegal and illegitimate occupant of that office, operating without proper statutory backing or legitimate governance credentials. An illegal individual cannot issue lawful commands, execute constitutional authority or demand compliance from respected academics who have given decades of dedicated service to this nation. Bartekwa’s continued interference in the governance of the University is a major impediment to peace, stability and institutional progress.

The Vanguard Student Unification Party makes it unequivocally clear that we stand in total solidarity with the University of Liberia Faculty Association and the University of Liberia Staff Association in their righteous struggle for dignity, fairness and administrative accountability. We urge the Faculty and Staff not to bow to intimidation, threats or illegitimate decrees issued by an autocratic administration and an illegal Board Chairman. The students of the University of Liberia recognize that our academic success is inextricably linked to the well-being, respect and proper compensation of our professors and university workers. In so doing, SUP reiterates that August 25th will be a glorious struggle day if the University does not reopen.

REF 20: SUP Condemns the Reckless Statement of Lester Tenny towards the Faculty and Staff; Calls for His Immediate Dismissal; Condemns Maparyan’s Announcement of the Reopening of the University without Resolving Internal Issues; and Calls on all Students to Assemble on August 25th in Demanding the Reopening of the University!

Comrades and friends, unrelenting crusaders of academic justice, firebrand radicals, fellow students and compatriots, the revolutionary Vanguard Student Unification Party, with unyielding resolve, seeks to address the decaying state of leadership, accountability and administrative ethics at our nation’s premier center of higher learning, the University of Liberia.

The University is experiencing an unsettled labor crisis, broken infrastructure and academic stagnation, but those in the administration have chosen to abandon diplomacy, reason and humility. Instead of demonstrating mature leadership and pursuing constructive reconciliation to protect the academic calendar, certain elements within the administration have resorted to provocation and shameless attacks against the Faculty and Staff.

The Vanguard Student Unification Party, therefore, condemns the reckless, arrogant, provocative, rebellious and disrespectful statements recently made by Lester Tenny against the hard-working Faculty and Staff of the University of Liberia. Lester Tenny, who previously functioned in an acting capacity as Vice President for Fiscal Affairs and Finance, recently went live on Facebook to boastfully announce that he has been confirmed by the Board of Trustees and subsequently appointed by the President of the University of Liberia. Instead of utilizing that platform to project sound leadership, build bridges or offer a vision for financial stability, this indolent chap weaponized his broadcast to exhibit extreme recalcitrance and utter disdain for members of the instructional staff. In a display of unprovoked hostility, he insulted members of the University of Liberia Faculty Association, using demeaning words on professors, lecturers and staff members. Such disparaging language is a direct assault on the dignity of our educators and a complete degradation of the high office he purports to occupy.

This unbecoming behavior occurs against the backdrop of an unprecedented institutional crisis, where the University is embroiled in a severe standoff between the administration, the University of Liberia Faculty Association and the University of Liberia Staff Association. The Faculty and Staff Associations have rightfully disengaged from academic activities, declaring a total boycott of the proposed university reopening scheduled for August 25th. Their disengagement is rooted in legitimate grievances and critical administrative failures, resulting in an explicit vote of no confidence passed against key members of the University's leadership, including the then Acting Vice President for Fiscal Affairs and Finance, Lester Tenny, the Director of Human Resources, Reginald Gaye and the President of the University of Liberia.

Given these serious circumstances, it is disturbing and irresponsible that the President of the University of Liberia and the Board of Trustees would proceed to confirm and formally appoint Lester Tenny while the institution remains handcuffed in a devastating crisis. Lester Tenny had already been serving in an acting capacity for several months, during which his administration failed to foster harmonious relations or build confidence among key internal stakeholders. The Faculty Association had formally submitted its grievances and demands to the Board of Trustees long before this controversial appointment was finalized. This reality forces us to question the fairness, transparency and credibility of this Jack and Rose appointment.

The Faculty and Staff are legitimate and indispensable stakeholders of the University. Once they have expressed specific concerns regarding the conduct and competence of administrators, their concerns should not be dismissed. The decision to protect and promote controversial individuals instead of addressing the underlying problems is clear evidence that the administration is bent on perpetuating, escalating and institutionalizing the ongoing conflict.

Furthermore, Lester Tenny's own professional history and public declarations regarding dual employments reveal a serious hypocrisy that undermines his moral authority to govern or lecture others. In his podcast, he aggressively pontificated on the legal and ethical grounds of individuals holding dual employment across different state institutions. He said that an individual should not receive dual salaries and provided examples of faculty members working at the Central Bank of Liberia or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who also receive salaries from the University of Liberia.

However, this loose-talking hypocrite's past actions contradict the standards he is imposing on others. It is not a secret that he served as the Vice President for Technical Services at the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) from 2018 to 2022, while at the same time maintaining his status and employment as a senior member of the University of Liberia Faculty. The same individual who today wants to lecture faculty members on the illegality of double-dipping must be held accountable to the same standard. Lester Tenny's gross inability to provide a sound and justifiable explanation for his history of dual public employment means that he does not have any moral authority to lecture, discipline or demean the Faculty and Staff of the University of Liberia.

As it stands, the University needs mature leadership, tactful diplomacy and sincere reconciliation. Therefore, Lester Tenny's arrogance and divisiveness are unacceptable. The University cannot realistically expect to resolve an institutional crisis when a senior financial officer continues to insult and vilify faculty members. On that basis, the revolutionary Vanguard Student Unification Party calls for the immediate dismissal of Lester Tenny and declares him persona non grata.

Meanwhile, SUP condemns the deceptive announcement made by the President of the University of Liberia regarding the reopening of the University on August 25th. The University's president cannot be engaging in public relations stunts by making empty promises to the student body and the Liberian people when the internal issues stopping the resumption of academic activities remain unresolved. You cannot announce an arbitrary reopening date when the Faculty and Staff Associations remain committed to an academic boycott.

The University of Liberia cannot reopen for instruction without the active and voluntary inclusion of its Faculty and Staff. The administration has failed to negotiate in good faith, failed to settle outstanding financial obligations, failed to address administrative malpractices and failed to satisfy the major demands presented by ULFA and ULSA. To announce a reopening under these unresolved conditions is to treat the academic lives of Liberian students with utter frivolity. The announcement of the August 25th reopening date without prior settlement of internal grievances is a mockery of 30,000 students.This misguided focus tells us that the true priorities of the administration are self-preservation and showmanship, instead of student welfare and academic excellence.

The victims of this prolonged administrative negligence and institutional ego-clashing are the students of the University of Liberia. Liberian students, coming from poor families, continue to suffer delayed graduations, lost professional opportunities and unbearable financial hardship due to the total incapacity of the current administration to maturely manage labor issues. The administration and the Board of Trustees must realize that the patience of the student body is exhausted, and we will no longer permit our educational future to be held hostage by administrative incompetence and reckless bravado.

In light of these realities, the revolutionary Vanguard Student Unification Party calls upon all conscious, resilient and determined students of the University of Liberia to assemble in massive numbers on August 25th at the Capitol Hill Campus to peacefully and uncompromisingly demand the genuine, fully resolved and complete reopening of our University.

REF 19: SUP Calls on all Students to Assemble at the Capitol Hill Campus on August 25th as We Demand the Reopening of the University of Liberia; Condemns the Continuous Harassment of Jurors and Demands the Immediate Dismissal of Judge Ousman Feika

Comrades and friends, ideological militants of massescracy, intellectual paratroopers, apostles of the massescratic renaissance, revolutionary scholars, students, waiters and waitresses, motorcyclists, hustling street vendors and all courageous Liberians, SUP conveys its fraternal revolutionary salutations.

Comrades and progressive allies, the leadership of the 34th Politburo and Central Committee of the revolutionary Vanguard Student Unification Party forcefully addresses the systemic collapse and criminal neglect plaguing the University of Liberia, the nation's premier sanctuary of higher education. As the announced August 25th resumption of classes approaches, the University remains trapped in an operational impasse.

The Administration of the University of Liberia, working alongside the Board of Trustees and the Government of Liberia, has published an academic calendar on paper, but they have deliberately ignored the administrative, financial and structural disaster that make learning impossible.

The Vanguard Student Unification Party stands firmly against this administrative hypocrisy and holds the Government of Liberia and the UL Administration solely responsible for paralyzing our academic lives.
The plight of the University is an accumulation of unaddressed grievances that affect every single student on our campuses.
The government and administration have turned the University of Liberia into an academic death trap. Thousands of students are forced to attend lectures in dilapidated facilities where basic human dignity is denied on a daily basis. The bathrooms across our campuses, from Capitol Hill to Fendall, are unhygienic, unrenovated and hazardous, posing severe health risks to the student population. There is a complete absence of campus transportation, leaving struggling students stranded for hours or forced to walk long distances in unpredictable weather conditions just to attend classes.

Our learning spaces lack proper laboratory equipment, basic instructional materials, internet connectivity and adequate security. The University's environment has become fundamentally unsafe, insecure and unsupportive of serious intellectual work. This appalling state is the direct outcome of a government that views public education as a secondary burden rather than a primary national obligation. The failure to maintain basic physical infrastructure is an open insult to the children of the poor people and down-trodden masses who depend on this institution for their advancement.

The current crisis and impending boycott of classes by ULFA directly affects more than 25,000 students. We will not continue to be the grass while ULFA, ULSA, the BoT and the government of Liberia display Cat and Mouse play at the detriment of thousands of students.

Therefore, the revolutionary Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) calls on all militant students, progressives and defenders of public education to assemble in their thousands at the Capitol Hill Campus on August 25th to launch a united struggle for the immediate reopening of the University of Liberia and the restoration of accountable leadership within the institution.

The closure of the University is not an accident. It is the inevitable consequence of years of administrative incompetence, official neglect and a persistent failure to prioritize public education.
While students are denied their constitutional right to education, they continue to endure collapsing infrastructure, unsanitary facilities, inadequate laboratories, poor access to internet connectivity, insufficient security and the absence of reliable campus transportation. These conditions are unacceptable and represent a clear betrayal of the students of the University of Liberia.

Fast forward , the revolutionary Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) condemns the Government of Liberia’s handling of the jurors in the trial involving former Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweah, Jr. and his co-defendants. The release of the 12 jurors from the Monrovia Central Prison deserves no commendation for ending a deprivation of liberty. Their subsequent referral to the Ministry of Justice for criminal investigation only extends what appears to be a campaign of intimidation against citizens who performed a constitutional duty.

SUP is deeply troubled by the apparent disparity in the treatment of jurors. While some individuals have been spared further scrutiny, the remaining 12 now face investigation after their release.

This uneven approach raises serious concerns about equal treatment under the law and risks creating the perception that jurors are rewarded or punished according to whether their actions align with the preferences of those in power. Such a precedent threatens public confidence in the independence of Liberia’s justice system.

A democratic society cannot sustain an independent jury system if citizens fear detention, investigation or prosecution because of their participation in judicial proceedings. Jurors must be free to discharge their civic responsibilities without intimidation or political pressure.
Any action that creates the appearance of retaliation against jurors weakens the rule of law and undermines the constitutional guarantee of a fair and impartial justice system.

SUP therefore calls on the Ministry of Justice to immediately discontinue any investigation that lacks a clear and lawful basis and to refrain from any action perceived as retaliation against these jurors. The Government of Liberia must protect, not persecute, citizens who answer the call to serve their country through jury service.

SUP calls for the immediate dismissal of Judge Ousman Feika from Criminal Court “C” because public confidence in the impartial administration of justice has been seriously eroded. We further demand an end to all forms of intimidation, harassment and politically motivated actions directed at the 12 jurors. Should the government persist in actions that undermine judicial independence and constitutional liberties, SUP will organize broad-based, peaceful and lawful democratic resistance in defense of the rule of law,
judicial independence and the constitutional rights of all Liberians.

An attack on the independence of the jury system is an attack on every Liberian’s right to justice. SUP will continue to stand with the people in resisting every attempt to erode the rule of law and constitutional governance.
