Over 250 twelfth-grade students, neatly dressed in their school uniforms, assembled in the gymnasium of the William V. S. Tubman Gray School in Gbarnga, B**g County, to participate in a Career Day program organized and sponsored by B**g County Electoral District #2 Representative, Hon. James M. Kolleh.

Speaking during the program, Hon. Kolleh described the initiative as the first in a series of educational engagements aimed at preparing students for their future career paths and helping them make informed decisions about their roles in society.

According to the lawmaker, although many people, including himself, did not have the opportunity to benefit from pre-career guidance during their school years, he is committed to ensuring that current and future twelfth graders in B**g County receive such exposure and mentorship.

More than ten professionals from various fields, including law, medicine, engineering, accounting, nursing, economics, social work, law enforcement, and journalism, served as lecturers during the event.

The speakers shared personal experiences about their educational journeys and professional careers while encouraging students to carefully choose careers that align with their passions and goals.

The students expressed gratitude to Hon. Kolleh for organizing the initiative, noting that the lectures positively influenced their thinking and broadened their understanding of different career opportunities. They praised the lawmaker for bringing together experts and specialists to mentor them and wished him success as he continues to represent the people of District #2, B**g County, in the 55th Legislature.

The event was also attended by the County Education Officer (CEO) and several District Education Officers (DEOs) from across B**g County.

The Honorable House of Representatives has constituted a specialized committee to investigate alleged undue charges imposed on the business sector and ordinary citizens at the Freeport of Monrovia.

The decision was reached during Thursdayโ€™s sitting following concerns raised by Grand Bassa County Electoral District #2 Representative, Hon. J. Clarence T. Banks, regarding excessive port-related charges and bottlenecks that continue to negatively impact importers and the general public.

Those appointed to serve on the committee include:

Hon. Musa Bility โ€“ Chairman
Hon. Foday Fahnbulleh โ€“ Co-Chair
Hon. Marvin Cole โ€“ Member
Hon. Jeremiah Sokan โ€“ Member
Hon. Austin Taylor โ€“ Member
Hon. Dixon Seboe โ€“ Member
Hon. Ernest Manseah โ€“ Member

The committee has been mandated to conduct a full-scale investigation into the matter and report its findings and recommendations to Plenary.

The House believes that ordinary Liberians continue to suffer from the burden of excessive charges and administrative bottlenecks at the port, a situation lawmakers say is discouraging business growth and increasing hardship for citizens.

According to lawmakers, many importers are now opting to use neighboring ports in the Republic of Guinea to bring in their goods due to the high charges and delays experienced at Liberian port. Members of the House further noted that delays in cargo clearance often compel importers to pay huge demurrage fees, thereby increasing the cost of goods on the local market.

Appearing before the House during Thursdayโ€™s session were the Commissioner General of the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA), the President of the Liberia Business Association (LIBA), the General Manager of Global Tracking & Maritime Solution (GTMS), the President of the Custom Brokers Association of Liberia, the General Manager of APM Terminals, the General Manager of MTS Inspection Services Ltd., and the General Manager of METECH Scientific.

The officials appeared to address issues surrounding the alleged imposition of undue charges on the business community and citizens of Liberia.

The House of Representatives has requested at least five committees to review a fifty-seven million dollar financing agreement between Liberia and the International Development Association- IDA.

The committees are Investment, Mines and Energy, Contracts and Monopoly, Ways and Means, and Public Utilities.

Plenary took the decision during its regular Thursday sitting on May 28, 2026, after receiving the agreement from President Joseph Boakai.

The agreement, between Liberia and the International Development Association, seeks to rapidly expand grid-connected renewable energy capacity and strengthen regional energy integration among participating countries.

The project will support the construction of a thirty megawatt solar plant with twelve megawatt hour battery storage, including associated transmission lines for grid connection at Mount Coffee Island.

It will also fund the expansion of the Mount Coffee Hydro Power Plant by adding forty-two megawatts of capacity through the installation of four turbines, each with a maximum capacity of ten point five megawatts.

Under the agreement, the International Development Association will extend a concessional credit of fifty-seven million United States dollars to support the full implementation of the project.

President Boakai, in his submission to the Legislature, urged timely ratification of the financing agreement, stressing its importance in strengthening Liberia's overall energy sector.

Meanwhile, the committee is expected to report to plenary next week Thursday.

The House of Representatives has constituted a specialized committee to review the Act establishing the Liberia Standards Authority (LiSA) following mounting concerns over weak regulatory enforcement and the influx of imported products labeled entirely in foreign languages.

The committee, headed by B**g County District 6 Representative Moima Briggs Mensah, was established Tuesday after officials of the authority appeared before plenary to respond to concerns raised by lawmakers regarding consumer safety and regulatory oversight.

During the hearing, LiSA officials informed lawmakers that the Act creating the institution limits its enforcement powers and that the authority often operates under directives from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The appearance followed a formal communication from Rep. Briggs Mensah, who questioned why fertilizers and other imported products continue to enter Liberian markets carrying instructions and warning labels written solely in foreign languages, making them inaccessible to most Liberian consumers.

Her inquiry extended beyond labeling concerns, demanding accountability reports covering fiscal years 2024 through 2026. She requested detailed records of inspections, seizures, enforcement actions, penalties, and compliance monitoring activities conducted by the authority.

Rep. Briggs Mensah attributes the weak regulatory environment to worsening public health concerns across the country.

โ€œToday our people are suffering from kidney infection, liver infection, and different sicknesses we cannot even explain,โ€ she told plenary. โ€œThe chemicals meant for plants and trees are now being used on vegetables, and our people are consuming them.โ€

Following the establishment of the committee, Rep. Briggs Mensah thanked House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon for treating the matter with urgency. She said the committee would work expeditiously despite reports from the authority that it remains understaffed and without official vehicles.

Other committee members include Representatives Anthony Williams, Prince K. Koinah, Johnson SN. Williams, Bernard Blue Benson, Ernest M. Manseah Sr. and Gbessie Sonii Feika.

The Plenary of the House of Representatives has mandated its Committees on Judiciary and Human Rights to review and report on a draft bill titled: โ€œAn Act to Amend the Act Establishing the Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR) and to Establish a Preventive Mechanism Against Torture, Other Cruel, Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or Punishment within the Republic of Liberia.โ€

Plenaryโ€™s decision was reached on Tuesday during the 5th Day Sitting of the 2nd Quarter of the 3rd Session following a communication submitted by Margibi County Electoral District #2 Representative Hon. Ivar K. Jones.

In his communication, Representative Jones requested Plenaryโ€™s review, deliberation, and subsequent enactment of the proposed legislation, which seeks to strengthen Liberiaโ€™s human rights framework and establish safeguards against torture and other forms of inhumane treatment.

According to Representative Jones, the proposed Act is consistent with the โ€œOptional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or Punishment,โ€ adopted on December 18, 2002, during the 57th Session of the United Nations General Assembly under Resolution A/RES/57/199. Liberia signed the protocol on September 22, 2004.

Representative Jones further referenced Article 21(e) of the 1986 Constitution of the Republic of Liberia, which prohibits torture and inhumane treatment against persons charged, arrested, detained, or otherwise held in confinement. The constitutional provision also mandates the Legislature to criminalize such acts and provide appropriate penalties against public officials found in violation.

The proposed legislation seeks to amend the existing Act establishing the Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR) while creating a national preventive mechanism aimed at ensuring compliance with international human rights standards relating to the prevention of torture and degrading treatment.

Following deliberations, Plenary mandated the Joint Committee on Judiciary and Human Rights to thoroughly review the draft bill and report its findings and recommendations to Plenary within two weeks.

As part of ongoing reform initiatives under the leadership of Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, the House of Representatives has reintroduced the production and distribution of the Legislative Journal covering the activities and proceedings of its daily sittings.

The Legislative Journal is prepared by the Secretariat of the Honorable House of Representatives and reviewed by the Chief Clerk prior to distribution to members of the House during the next dayโ€™s sitting. The initiative is intended to keep lawmakers informed about proceedings, decisions, and actions taken during previous sittings.

The reintroduction of the journal saw the Office of the Chief Clerk, on Tuesday during the 5th Day Sitting, distribute two separate editions of the Legislative Journal. These included the journal covering the 2nd Day Sitting of the 2nd Quarter of the 3rd Session held on May 12, 2026, as well as the journal covering the 5th Day Sitting of the Extraordinary Session of the 3rd Quarter held on April 16, 2026.

Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon believes the reform initiative forms part of efforts to modernize and strengthen parliamentary operations by ensuring transparency, institutional record-keeping, and effective legislative communication among members of the House.

The Speaker further emphasized that maintaining updated parliamentary records is essential to promoting accountability, continuity, and informed legislative decision-making within the First Branch of Government.
