Not Too Young To Run

Not Too Young To Run To the youth, We are not leaders of tomorrow but let us lead now and be the change that we seek to achieve. Let us always speak up against an injustice.

Indeed our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter the most.

Not soccer related

Kenyan runner Abel Mutai was only a few meters from the finish line, but got confused with the signs and stopped, thinking he had finished the race. A Spanish man, Ivan Fernandez, was right behind him and, realizing what was going on, started shouting to the Kenyan to keep running. Mutai did not know Spanish and did not understand.

Realizing what was going on, Fernandez pushed Mutai to victory. A reporter asked Ivan, "Why did you do this?" Ivan replied, "My dream is that one day we can have some sort of community life where we push ourselves and help each other win." The reporter insisted "But why did you let the Kenyan win?" Ivan replied, "I didn't let him win, he was going to win. The race was his."

The reporter insisted and asked again, "But you could have won!" Ivan looked at him and replied: "But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor of this medal? What would my Mother think of it?" The values are transmitted from generation to generation. What values do we teach our children and how much do you inspire others to earn? Most of us take advantage of people's weaknesses instead of helping to strengthen them.

RESPECT!
By Leymah Gbowee

A few years ago, my youngest daughter and I went to a function, there were many young children her age at the event. They all sat on one side of the room, and the adults naturally sat on the other side. I am forever the mother hen, so the entire time the adults were talking, I barely listened as I was keen on observing the interaction between and amongst the children.

As the girls joked and played, my daughter decided to turn some Wiki Stix on the table into tiny people for each of her friends using her artistic skills. Typical of children, she became the center of attention; we are told “light attracts bugs”. In a twinkle of an eye, my daughter literally flew from her seat and fell under the table as another child who wanted the spotlight willfully pushed her with all her might.

To say I was raging mad is an understatement. All of the adults stood up to check on her. I asked her to explain what had happened and she said she was pushed but she believed the girl didn’t mean to hurt her. She said through tears “mommy, it was an accident”. The waiter then said “nope, you may not have been paying attention but she intentionally pushed you”. I told him, I too had observed that she was pushed. I took a deep breath, said my good byes to the women and immediately gathered our stuff and we left the event.

I barely slept that night. I kept tossing and turning- replaying the whole scene in my head. At 6 am, I woke my daughter up and said to her “baby, please tell me what really happened from your perspective. She said “Mommy, I was pushed, but I didn’t want her to get in trouble with her mom, so I said it was an accident”. I had to take another deep breath, prayed for wisdom in that moment and then said to her “baby, I want you to know that it is kind of you to not want your friend to get in trouble, but what I observed yesterday was you being disrespected by someone you love”. I continued “I want you to tell your friend when you see her, that she cannot be your friend because she disrespected and hurt you”. “Tell her she can only be your friend if she apologizes to you for pushing you and promises to never disrespect you again”.

A day later, the girl’s mother called me and apologized and also narrated what my daughter had told her daughter about respecting her or they could never be friends.

Fast forward, a few days ago, I got a complaint that my youngest son had pushed and jumped another little boy. Well, the short form of the story is that he didn’t want to play with this child because the boy was dirty. Beyond fighting him, my son has been bullying the boy because of his poor appearance. When I received the complaint, I was angry, upset, and sad. Naturally as a parent, I began to ask myself, what are we doing to make him think it is okay to mistreat someone because of their appearance. As a family unit, we spent a lot of time discussing the situation and deterrent measures.

As a punishment for his actions, we took a pair of his favorite shoes, sneakers, and some outfits from his closet and made him take the items to the boy’s home. He was also made to apologize to the boy and the boy’s mother. We also had a stern talk with him about respecting people, regardless of age, status, or creed. TV privileges and other special treats have been taken away from him for the rest of the month. As a family, we all believe we need to deter him from this attitude, knowing that “to whom much is given, much is expected in return”.

My message to both my kids in these two situations is, RESPECT should be the core of our existence. You do not have to be friends with everyone, you may not like the way they look, you may not speak their language or share their socio-economic status, but it is a must that you RESPECT them.

We must find ways in our daily existence to reignite the culture of RESPECT!

6 young leaders who are improving the state of the world

On International Youth Day, we celebrate six young people shaping the future of education and technology.

Across the world, young people are shaping the future in healthcare, education, technology, food security and more. Their ideas are transforming communities and society.

To celebrate International Youth Day, here’s a look at the achievements of six inspirational young leaders who are improving the state of the world as part of our Global Shapers Community.

Basima Abdulrahman

Basima is an Iraqi structural engineer who is passionate about the environment. She founded Kesk, one of Iraq’s first sustainable architecture consultancies, to build greener buildings in her homeland.

Her consultancy helps other businesses to make their buildings more sustainable through retrofitting. No easy task in a country where security and the economy are top priorities and there is a lack of awareness of sustainable design and architecture.

But this hasn’t deterred Basima, who has big ambitions for the future: she wants to build her first green building within a couple of years and an entire green city in the northern region of Erbil in the next decade.

Kwiri is the founder and CEO of LifeGyde. The online platform is a space for young people to seek advice, guidance and support. She has an impressive track record of supporting not only individuals, but also small- and medium-sized businesses.

Her first venture helped immigrant owners of small businesses in California and she went on to found four more companies that helped local communities. When she developed anxiety and depression Kwiri realized how many people, like her, were struggling with their mental health – and LifeGyde was born.

As well as fighting stigma around mental health, LifeGyde also provides access to preventative information and advice.

Abi Ramanan

Abi is the co-founder and CEO of ImpactVision, a software platform that uses machine learning to reduce food waste. She is also a co-chair at the World Economic Forum’s upcoming Annual Meeting of the New Champions.

ImpactVision’s technology uses hyperspectral imaging – a combination of digital imaging and spectroscopy – to take a picture of food and analyze its nutritional value and freshness.

The non-invasive system aims to reduce waste while also improving food safety and consistency. As technology advances, the sensors it uses are reducing in size and price, and could soon be integrated into everyday devices. A hyperspectral camera – and a better understanding of the food you’re eating – could be coming to a smartphone near you.

Doreen is COO of Ubongo, a multi-media educational platform in Africa. Using the power of entertainment and mass media, the company provides educational material at low cost and high volume and scale.

Some 6.4 million households in 31 countries currently watch, listen and learn from Ubongo’s cartoons each week, with improved outcomes in maths and school readiness. In addition, the cartoons have also been shown to have a positive impact on the behaviour of caregivers.

In Akili and Me, children aged three to six join Akili in Lala Land, where they learn English, drawing, numbers and letters.

Nafez Dakkak

Nafez is CEO of the London office of the Queen Rania Foundation. Started in 2013 by Queen Rania of Jordan, the foundation aims to be the leading educational resource in Jordan and the rest of the Arab world, and to facilitate the development of new ideas and initiatives.

In his previous job, Nafez was the CEO of Edraak.org, which was the first non-profit Arabic massive open online course (MOOC).

The platform reaches more than 1.5 million Arabic-speakers, including disadvantaged youth across the Middle East. It offers original Arabic courses and access to Arabic language versions of courses taught by online educational platforms such as HarvardX and MITX.

Oana, a former state secretary in Romania’s Ministry of Labour, applies her passion for social innovation to search for solutions to some of the world’s big problems.

She’s the founder and general manager of Social Innovation Solutions, which offers training and consultancy in social innovation and entrepreneurship.

Before that, she led the team that set up Mesteshukar BuitQ, a social enterprise focused on traditional Roma crafts and skills. The organization promotes not only cultural heritage and ancient knowledge of Roma people, but also aims to tackle prejudice and discrimination.

She’s also on the Board of Directors of The Entrepreneurship Academy, where students work in teams, learning about business by running real businesses under the guidance of a “team coach”.

A very good piece from Hon. Melvin L. Yealu, Assistant Minister for Administration, Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications Republic of Liberia.

By doing the above and others that I may not mention , the old- man concluded , you will surely be successful and will accomplish your dream.

How to become a successful young leader....

In today’s fast-paced world, consumer demand and technological advances are growing at a faster rate than ever before. The youth of today are blessed to grow up in the current digital age. Young industry moguls are using their talent and motivation as early as they can, shooting them in CEO positions as early as high school.

The term “young CEO” used to be correlated with successful young adults, but nowadays, even a kid can come to mind. Like me, you might think that these youngsters are coming up with some crazy new technology. However, they are doing quite the contrary. They are simply finding success in existing markets.

For example, Leanna Archer. At the early age of 17 years, she burst into the scene as the youngest CEO to open on the NASDAQ. At nine years old she used her grandmother’s recipe to produce a specialty, all natural, hair product line. Just six years later she was pulling $100,000 in annual revenue. For the year 2016, her net worth was estimated at $5 million, not too shabby for a high school senior.

Another young gun is Robert Nay . Unlike beauty products, which have been around for thousands of years, Nay dove head first into a much newer market. Every played Bubble Ball? The game app saw two million downloads two weeks into its launch, snatching the throne for number one app in the free app store. The game they bumped into second? Angry Birds. That isn’t even the craziest part, Robert Nay was 14 when Bubble Ball launched and it was his first development. Today his company, Nay Games, is valued at around $2 million and that number is expected to keep growing.

These are just two of the countless examples of young guns making a huge splash in the business world. But the question remains, what qualities do they all seem to share?

1. Pursuit of Passion

Every success story I researched stemmed from doing something fun and personal use. Robert Nay designed a game to play on his phone that he could enjoy, decided to share it with the world and the world loved it. They say when you do what you love you’ll never work another day in your life. That seems to be the most reoccurring theme when it comes to success. Do what you love.

2. Listen and Learn

If you want to become a leader you have to know how to listen. Listen to peers, listen to your teachers, and listen to your heart. The world can give you the tools to create anything you want but if you don’t listen to the things around you, it will be hard to put those tools to use. Find what you love, learn how to do it to the best of your ability, and make a career out of it.

Nick Haschka, a young business owner of Credit Parent gives his advice saying:

“My best tip for young leaders is to practice humble confidence. You have to be willing to assert and lead, but also be willing to be wrong and adapt to the signals you receive from those below, beside, and above you. A lot of leadership is about listening, which is the humble part. Clarifying, re-stating, and asserting is the part requiring confidence. No one wants to work with an arrogant know-it-all, but people appreciate working with people who can make and articulate decisions and lead confidently. There's a fine line to walk that requires constant attention and deliberate action.”

3. Be Patient

Success doesn’t just happen overnight; these things take time. While some are fortunate to see rapid growth early, this is relatively uncommon. Trial and error is your best friend. They show you what you have and what you need. The key is to keep working and growing until the day comes when you’ve perfected your product. It could take months or it could take years, all good things come with time. For this reason, patience is always a virtue.

4. Stay Curious

“Millions saw the apple fall, but only Newton asked why.” Curiosity is a reoccurring trait in good leaders. The desire to explore and grow in your industry is vital.

William Lipovsky, CEO of First Quarter Finance suggests:

“A young leader needs to realize that early in their career it's about figuring out what to do. Then it's about how to do it. Then it's about finding who should be doing it. Last, it's about letting the who figure out the what.”

5. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable

When you’re comfortable being uncomfortable, you’re prepared to handle whatever life may throw you. Navy Seals go through “surf torture”, a process that involves linking arms and lying down in the cold ocean until the body reaches early stages of hypothermia. This is done daily before all other tasks. The goal is to force them to stay focused on their goals, despite how uncomfortable they feel. While this is an extreme example, the point is to never lose sight of your objective. No matter how bumpy the ride is.

Steve Kahan from Lumina Communications said that,

“People love their comfort zones, but those who zoom to the top are willing to shine a light on the important things that must change, and offer accountability for leading the effort. This doesn’t mean challenging everything so you’re perceived as an anti-establishment contrarian. The best approach is to carefully choose your areas of challenge where changes can make the biggest impact, such as increasing revenue, lowering costs, improving customers’ lives, or removing frustrations for your co-workers. You will become known as a leader who successfully challenges the old ways and creates new, better ways where it counts.”

6. Be Persistent

Mikaela, Founder and Marketing Manager of Miracle Marketing starts us off by sharing her advice:

“To be successful at a young age, you have to be fearless, take risks, and trust your gut. Never let anyone tell you what’s going to be hard for you, and never let people project their worries, fears, anxieties on you. “It’s so hard to get a job after college!” Well, that’s only because you believed it to be so. You can choose to go along with limiting beliefs, or not.”

Sometimes you can be your worst enemy. You can achieve anything if you put your mind to it and believe! Never give up. Tell yourself you can then really believe it. You will be amazed at the results that will be running your way.

While these five qualities are only a handful of those found in successful young leaders today, they are definitely some of the most important. At the end of the day success always seems to find it’s way to those who follow their dreams, work hard, and learn as much as they can. Remember that great leaders don’t tell you what to do – they show you how it’s done. If you know what you want, go out and get it.

I believe there is a force of unbelievable love and goodness deep within you, and that force is you more than anything is you. It's like a beautiful light trying to work its way out of you, and shine through your art or shine through your deepest feelings of love and through your kindness.

Sometimes the world seems so dark and lonely, no matter how bright the sun shines or how many people you find within physical vicinity.

Sometimes you may feel lost in the world. Sometimes you may feel the world has lost sight of you.

But more of us see the light in you than you realize. If we fail to show it to you sometimes, or most of the time, maybe it's because we are trapped in the dark trying to get out too.

Stay strong, my friends. There's beauty in the struggle. There's so much to overcome, but imagine what it could mean to overcome it. You are truly amazing even if it often goes unseen or unshown. The world only seems so cold and dark sometimes because you are so bright. Your incredible potential sets a high bar.

29/05/2020

Liberia Senate's will be making the greatest mistake of all time to think about expelling Ab Darius Dillon out.

SENATOR DILLON is not God. He is human like the rest of us. If, as a lawmaker he feels frustrated about the way things are, if he somehow feels cheated by his peers and believe that they did something wrong, it is his right to voice out his views as a member of the Senate.

ARTICLE 42 of the constitution is clear. “No member of the Senate or House of Representatives shall be arrested, detained, prosecuted or tried as a result of opinions expressed or votes cast in the exercise of the functions of his office. Members shall be privileged from arrest while attending, going to or returning from sessions of the Legislature, except for treason, felony or breach of the peace. All official acts done or performed, and all statement made in the Chambers of the Legislature shall be privileged, and no Legislator shall be held accountable or punished therefor.”

AS SIR KNIGHT rightly said in his book: “Politicians sometimes use unwarranted abuse to enliven what they know is a dull brief. They are aware that the barb helps them to hold the floor and thereby get the message across.”

SO, INSTEAD of orchestrating a poorly-hatched and calculated attempt to weaken Senator Dillon in an election year, Pro Temp Albert Chie and his peers can do Liberia the favor and save democracy the trouble by focusing on the plight of those languishing at the bottom of the economic ladder and delivering democracy dividends to the people of Liberia, instead of trying to shortchange them under the guise of bogus and undemocratic attempt to remove a popularly-elected Senator from his post.

SENATOR DILLON is not perfect. He has made some missteps, but he has apologized for them. When the public felt shorted, they took him to task, and he has not shied away from apologizing and checkmating himself. People see him as the light.

Front-page Africa quote "SENATOR DILLON has been a rare light in the darkness of a legislative body that has brought nothing but shame and disgrace to Liberia, signing bogus concessions, failing to ask the right questions to unqualified nominees and simply turning a blind eye to the ills in society".

People believed in him as the light, making that attempt to expel him from the Senate will be the upper house greatest mistake of all time.

27/05/2020

Take advantage of these opportunities.

“The global economy will this year likely suffer the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression due to the Covid-19 pandemic”, says IMF.

No one knows when the corona virus pandemic will end for economic activities to return to normal. But even as uncertainty abounds, life changing opportunities are already rearing their heads. Throughout history, each time an economic or health crisis break out, the direction and momentum of the society and lifestyle is altered.

From the Black Death in the 1300s, the 2002 SARS pandemic to the 2008 Global financial crisis. These events left us with lasting economic and lifestyle impact. So what are some of the opportunities the Corona Virus pandemic have presented today? Here are 3 of some of them.

Digital media
Digital marketing has experienced a boom over the past decade. But the industry is recording some loses as businesses are now cutting back on their digital marketing spending. However, the industry is likely to experience even major boom after covid-19. Many industries have experienced significant decline to digital marketing usage since the lockdown; with travel, transportation and hospitality being the most hit.

Most businesses are currently shut down, with no cash-flow and companies are eating deep into their cash reserve. When this pandemic is over and businesses resume, most businesses will need to get their cash-flow back on track. Businesses will be open to innovative and affordable ways to reach customers. And digital marketing will be there to the rescue. This is an area you want to position yourself in. Take this opportunity to develop your digital marketing skill.

Online education
And easy way to start developing relevant skills is through online education. Most schools are close today. Students and workers are at home. One of the best things you can do today is to take an online education. You probably heard the name Sir Isaac Newton, the man who propounded the law of gravity. What most people do not know is that, Isaac Newton came up with the idea of the theory of gravity, among many other discoveries during an epidemic that forced people to stay at home in 1600s. by the end of the lockdown, Newton was returning back to school, in society in essence, with unfair advantages.

For over a decade, there have been predictions of online education going mainstream to rival traditional education. This change has seemed to be gradual over the years. But this virus outbreak is already giving online education the moment it’s been waited for.

Online education; short courses, degree programs and conference training is booming now. It’s a good time to take advantage of this trend either by taking relevant online courses or creating you online learning program; depending on where you fit in.

The Gig Economy
As many companies will not want to have huge numbers of full time employees (and fixed costs) after this crisis, this will accelerate the gig economy, freelance works and associated startups. People can easily keep their job while making side income offering freelance services. You want to start preparing yourself to function in a gig economy.

Over the longer term, Covid-19 has irrevocably changed the way people and businesses will compete over the next decade. People that choose to capitalize on these underlying changes will succeed and the ones that don’t will get behind the line.
