The Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University successfully hosted the 6th Student Research Forum, 2026, bringing together undergraduate researchers to explore the strategic, political and security challenges shaping the contemporary world. Held under the theme โ€œNavigating Global Transformations: Understanding Strategic Complexities in the 21st Century,โ€ the forum provided a dynamic platform for students to present their research and engage with emerging issues within the field of Strategic Studies and International Relations.

The forum was graced by the Vice Chancellor of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Air Vice Marshal WRDMI Wickramasinghe, USP, MSc (Def & Strat Stu), MHRM, BSc (Def Stu) Aero Eng, C Eng (UK), MRAeS, AMIE(SL), ndc, psc as the Chief Guest, together with Brigadier HA Hapugoda USACGSC, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence and Administration), Professor Charitha L Gunasekara, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Colonel WHMCK Wijekoon WWV RWP RSP USP idu psc, the Dean of the Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies, Dr Harinda Vidanage, Director of Centre for Strategic Assessment and Dr Niruka Sanjeewani, Head of the Department of Strategic Studies alongside distinguished academics, researchers, military professionals, and other members of the university community. The Guest of Honour and Keynote Speaker, Dr. Patrick McNamara, Executive Director and Ex-Officio Board Member of Fulbright Commission, Sri Lanka, delivered the keynote address, offering valuable insights into the complexities and transformations defining the contemporary global environment.

The Student Research Forum continues to serve a distinctive purpose within the Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies, extending beyond the presentation of academic research. It provides undergraduates with an opportunity to transform classroom knowledge into meaningful inquiry while developing essential competencies in research, critical thinking, communication, academic presentation, and event management. This yearโ€™s forum was chaired by Faculty Under Officer PRMSAN Rajapaksha, with Day Scholar Isulie Aththanayake serving as Conference Secretary and Day Scholar Janani Prabhashwarie serving as Chief Editor. Together with the organizing committee and student participants, they contributed to the successful planning and ex*****on of the forum.

A significant highlight of SRF 2026 was the recognition of excellence in student research and academic presentation. Day Scholar KM Deshani of Intake 42, from the Strategic Studies and International Relations programme, was awarded Best Researcher, recognising the quality and overall contribution of her research. Day Scholar HOVR Perera of Intake 42, from the Strategic Studies and International Relations programme, was recognised as the Best Poster Presenter, highlighting excellence in communicating research through visual presentation.

The Student Research Forum 2026 stands as another milestone in the Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studiesโ€™ continuing effort to cultivate a culture of research among undergraduates. By bringing together research, dialogue, and diverse perspectives, SRF 2026 reaffirmed that student research is not merely an academic requirement, but an important avenue through which young scholars can engage with the strategic realities of an increasingly complex world.

General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University proudly emerged as the Overall Champion at the APIIT EXTRAVAGANZA Athletic Meet 2026, held on 1 and 2 September 2026 at Torrington Grounds. Represented by nearly 40 athletes, the KDU team delivered an outstanding performance, demonstrating discipline, teamwork and determination throughout the competition. The team secured 11 Gold, 10 Silver and 12 Bronze medals, accumulating a total of 294 points to claim the Overall Championship. Adding to this success, KDU was crowned Overall Relay Champion with 61 points. Officer Cadet RRK Maduranga was recognized as the Best Athlete โ€“ Track Events, while Officer Cadet KMTS Kumara received the award for Best Thrower of the meet. The success at APIIT EXTRAVAGANZA 2026 marks another significant milestone in KDUโ€™s pursuit of sporting excellence and brings great pride to the University.

The Library Network of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), in collaboration with the Faculty of Criminal Justice (FOCJ), conducted a one-day programme titled โ€˜Empowering Students via Reading & Researchโ€™ for FOCJ undergraduates on 11th August 2026, at the sophisticated, state-of-the-art upper floor area of the Main Library, with the aim of inculcating a reading culture among the students. The specific objectives of this one-day session were to give the students an opportunity to explore curriculum-related text books, recommended readings, scholarly databases available in the library, and motivate them towards utilizing authentic sources of information resources for learning and research. Further, the students were inspired through interactive discussions with Prof. W. M. Dhanapala, Dean FOCJ, a prominent academic in Sri Lanka specializing in Criminology and Criminal Justice, who played an active role as a Human Book, and Dr. Ruwan M. Jayathunga, a great personality, author of 60 books, who delivered the book talk.

The programme included the events: Human Library, Book Talk on Criminal Psychology, and Exhibition of print and e-resources related to the FOCJ curriculum.

The KDU Library Network and faculty members of the Faculty of Criminal Justice extend their sincere appreciation to the resource persons for their valuable support in successfully conducting the programme. Students from the Department of Police Sciences and the Department of Criminology participated in the activities and benefited from the programme.

Air Vice Marshal Indika Wickramasinghe, USP, MSc (Def & Strat Stu), MHRM, BSc (Def Stu) Aero Eng, C Eng (UK), MRAeS, AMIE (SL), ndc, psc, assumed duties as the new Vice Chancellor of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) on the morning of 01st September 2026. He formally assumed office by signing his first official document amidst the chanting of Pirith by the Maha Sangha.

Air Vice Marshal Indika Wickramasinghe is a proficient Aeronautical Engineer who has held several key engineering appointments in the Sri Lanka Air Force, including Director General General Engineering and Director General Aeronautical Engineering.

The official assumption of duties was followed by a guard turnout, a colourful ceremonial parade with KDU colours, and a symbolic tree planting to mark the occasion. The ceremonial parade was attended by Deputy Vice Chancellors, Rectors of Campuses, Deans of Faculties, Centre Directors, senior tri-service and administrative staff, as well as a cross-section of officer cadets and day scholars.

Later in the morning, the newly appointed Vice Chancellor addressed the Deans of all faculties of KDU and outlined his vision for taking the University forward during his tenure. He highlighted several key areas of emphasis, including elevating the standards of the University through the provision of quality education, strengthening academic excellence, and enhancing research output.

The Vice Chancellor called upon all staff members to extend their fullest support, willing cooperation, and active contribution towards achieving these objectives and further advancing KDU.

Air Vice Marshal Wickramasinghe also expressed his gratitude to His Excellency the President for appointing him to the post and to the Commander of the Air Force for nominating him for the position. He further expressed his appreciation to the Commandants, Commanding Officers, lecturers, and instructors of the former Kotelawala Defence Academy (KDA), who guided and groomed him during his studentship and contributed significantly to his professional development.

He acknowledged that the experience and guidance received during his formative years at KDA had played an important role in preparing him to undertake the high responsibility of serving as the Vice Chancellor of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.

The 19th KDU International Research Conference (KDU IRC 2026) brought together distinguished scholars, senior military professionals, researchers, academics and practitioners to explore under the theme โ€œFrom Crisis to Opportunity: Reimagining Governance, Infrastructure and Innovation for a Resilient Future,โ€.

The 19th International Research Conference (IRC 2026) of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) was successfully inaugurated on 20 August 2026 at the University premises.

Held under the theme โ€œFrom Crisis to Opportunity: Reimagining Governance, Infrastructure and Innovation for a Resilient Future,โ€ the conference brings together researchers, academics and professionals from Sri Lanka and overseas to exchange knowledge, foster collaboration and explore innovative approaches to contemporary challenges.

The inauguration was graced by the Chief Guest, Hon. Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, who emphasized the importance of building a strong research culture founded on curiosity, academic freedom and integrity. She highlighted the need to encourage critical thinking, responsible innovation and research that responds to national priorities and contributes to global knowledge. The Prime Minister also formally launched the IRC 2026 Abstract Book, marking an important milestone in the conference.

The Keynote Speaker, Professor Malik Peiris of the University of Hong Kong, brought his internationally recognized expertise in virology and global public health to the conference.

The event brought together senior government officials and policymakers, senior officers of the Tri-Forces, researchers, local and foreign academics, industry professionals and conference delegates, facilitating insightful discussions, the exchange of diverse perspectives and meaningful dialogue on research, innovation and contemporary challenges.

IRC 2026 features 13 multidisciplinary research tracks, with international participation from 10 countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand, and The United Kingdom further strengthening KDUโ€™s international academic engagement and its contribution to research, innovation and national development.
