Saubhagya Foundation is making a humanitarian appeal to seek financial support to save a mother of a newborn.
Medical context – A 32-year-old otherwise healthy mother, was admitted to a reputed private hospital in Colombo on 08th May 2025 for a planned caesarian section to give birth to her second child. She has a 4-year-old child. During the delivery of her second child, due to unforeseen complication, within seconds she went into have a cardiac arrest, and was successfully resuscitated. However, due to the complication she went into develop severe acute liver failure, kidney failure, brain oedema and cardiovascular instability – in essence the failure of 4 out of the 5 vital organ systems that keep all human beings alive. Against the odds of 100% mortality in a similar situation within the next 24 hours, this brave mother has rallied and responded well to medical management within an intense setting which is unparalleled. Currently failing organ functions are returning to a level of function and there is very good chance of survival. There is a significant journey yet to achieve the full functional status she requires significant input and invasive monitoring, organ support until such time.
As we all are aware, medical treatment is costly, and with a rough estimate based on current expenditure we envisage her full treatment costs would be in the range of 20million Sri Lankan rupees. The hospital services and specialist services are being offered free and has agreed to provide the best possible care to save this mother sans any monetary gains. We appeal to raise funds only for medication consumables and direct costs as she is likely to require very long stay in intensive care unit for multi-organ support. The costs involved are unbearable for a young family. The medical team caring her is in the firm belief that the intensity of her management couldn’t be replicated at any other institution, and the survival chances gained in the past one week would be lost if her management is to be transferred elsewhere.
Therefore, we kindly appeal to the philanthropic public, to contribute to save the life of this mother who is yet to see her newborn, and to give the life not only to her but to the two young children and her family
