A historic milestone for the National Institute of Mental Health.

For the first time in its history, a dedicated Clinical Society was established following the clinical meeting held on 18th March 2026, with the active participation of all staff categories—marking a significant step forward in strengthening multidisciplinary collaboration.

The Society is committed to:
• Supporting continuous professional development of its members
• Promoting and encouraging high-quality research
• Fostering collaboration and professional fellowship
• Strengthening evidence-based clinical practice
• Upholding ethical standards in mental healthcare

At the Annual General Meeting, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist
Dr. Saman Weerawardhana was appointed as the President, and
Dr. Upeka Kariyawasam as the Secretary, alongside the election of 37 council members representing a truly multidisciplinary team.

This marks the beginning of a new chapter in advancing clinical excellence and unity within NIMH.

In line with the 100th year anniversary celebrations of the National Institute of Mental Health, we are delighted to announce the opening of a new Gymnasium dedicated to both staff and patients.

This important addition highlights our commitment to holistic healing—recognizing the vital connection between physical activity and mental well-being.

The Gymnasium was officially opened by Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni, Deputy Minister of Health & Mass Media marking another meaningful step forward in enhancing the quality of care and support we provide.

Together, we continue to build a healthier, stronger future for all. 🌿

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Buddhadasa Waidyasekera, a distinguished and pioneering figure in the field of mental health in Sri Lanka.

Dr. Waidyasekera dedicated his life to improving mental health services and to caring compassionately for the less fortunate. He served with great commitment in both his teaching and managerial roles at Angoda Mental Hospital, where he inspired many through his knowledge, leadership, and humanity.

He had the unique ability to bring warmth, colour, and wit to every room he entered. His innate kindness and genuine interest in people were evident to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He served the nation as:

Sri Lanka’s first Forensic Psychiatrist
Medical Superintendent of Angoda Mental Hospital
Founder Member and President of the Sri Lanka Psychiatric Association

Dr. Waidyasekera’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched, the students he mentored, and the lasting contributions he made to mental health care in Sri Lanka.
