🎨 Today, We Opened More Than a Batik Centre. We Opened Doors to Opportunity, Dignity, and a Brighter Future for Womens

A proud milestone was achieved on 09 June 2026 with the official opening of the Batik Centre at the Thonikkal Weaving Centre in Vavuniya.

The event was graced by Mr. S. Krishnendran, Provincial Director, Department of Industries – Northern Province, as the Chief Guest, Mr. I. Prathaban, Divisional Secretary – Vavuniya Divisional Secretariat, as the Honourable Guest, and Mr. P. Ragavan, Industrial Promotion Officer, as the Special Guest.

More than a production centre, this facility represents hope, empowerment, and opportunity. It will support the growth of the local Batik Producers Society, empowering women artisans, including talented members with hearing and speech disabilities, proving that creativity and determination know no limits.

During the event, the Chief Guest highlighted the promising future of the batik industry, while the Honourable Guest reaffirmed the commitment of the Vavuniya Divisional Secretariat to promoting traditional crafts and supporting local artisans through development initiatives and market opportunities.

Today, we celebrate not only the opening of a Batik centre but also the beginning of new journeys, new enterprises, and new dreams for the women of Vavuniya.

🌿 Weaving Hope, Tradition & Sustainable Livelihoods 🇱🇰✨

In many rural communities, traditional skills are more than cultural practices — they are pathways to dignity, income, and a better future for families. ❤️

With this vision, the Department of Industries – Northern Province, Mullaitivu District successfully implemented a 07-Day Palmyrah Leaf Based Design Mat Weaving Training Programme in the Oddusuddan DS Division from 14th–16th May and 23rd–26th May 2026, with the support of the PSDG Fund and coordination of the National Craft Council (NCC). 🌱🧺

The programme brought together enthusiastic women participants who actively engaged in learning traditional weaving techniques, innovative design patterns, finishing methods, and value-added product development using palmyrah leaves.

From raw palmyrah leaves to beautifully crafted design mats, participants demonstrated remarkable dedication, creativity, and perseverance throughout the training. ✨

Beyond preserving a valuable cultural heritage, this programme created opportunities for:

With the vision of creating new SME opportunities for youth and women in Vavuniya, the Department of Industries – Northern Province successfully conducted a Knowledge Sharing Workshop on Pipe Cleaner Based Product Production on 22.05.2026 from 02:00 PM to 05:00 PM under the “Knowledge to Nation – MSME Empowerment Programme.” 🌱✨

The initiative was developed and implemented under the guidance of Mr. K.
