Haritha Jeewa -

Haritha Jeewa - හරිතජීව A project by Leo Club of University of Colombo. 🌿 Our team has taken this step to develop the ecosystem by contributing 1000 plants to the Puttalam lagoon.

Project හරිතජීව, intends to recover the deforested, destructed area which were destroyed by planting a mangrove forest as mangrove plants are of a vital factor in maintaining the natural balance between flora and fauna. We have identified that there is an instability in the spread of the Mangrove trees and as per our study it would contribute the community to grow sustainably. Amid the awareness regarding the importance and value, the destruction and erosion of mangrove forests continue to take place in many parts of Sri Lanka due to many a socio-economical as well as ineffective and inefficient policy decisions taken. Increasing modes of pollutants, and habitations within mangrove areas have made for these plants and diversity to eradicate and reduce quickly. We believe that our project ‘හරිතජීව’; contributes sustainably to the community by leading a positive example to the future societies. We ensure that our project helps to grow each aspect required for the sustainable development.

Mangroves play an integral role in protecting the coastal environment and areas as well as the biodiversity surrounding them. These plants store up to 500% more organic carbon than your average terrestrial tropical plant. This is a result of the mangroves’ ability to apprehend and store organic carbon, in their soils. With an average life span of 25 years, a hectare of a mature mangrove forest absorbs up to 840 metric tonnes of carbon. Which means that one mangrove tree removes 308kg (0.3 tonnes) of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere over its growth span , which is 12.3kg per year. Most territorial plants have their carbon stored above the soil level whilst in mangroves, it is stored below the soil level.

Unlike green carbon terrestrial plants and forests, which stores organic carbon in the form of biomass which is not released to the atmosphere until after the trees die, mangroves store most carbon in their soil sediments. It would last longer if it’s not destroyed. Thus, in order to sequestrate carbon naturally, without the involvement of human labor and man made processes, mangroves must be protected and maintained.
