Sidon Excavation Best of 15 Years When a city is mentioned so many times in Antiquity, one has to wonder what the big fuss is about.

In the case of Sidon, one of the oldest cities of Lebanon and one of the most prominent Phoenician harbours, the big fuss becomes legendary. Until recently there was little information on this great city but the last 15 years of archaeological excavations by the British Museum in conjunction with the Department of Antiquities of Lebanon has revealed a fountain of information going back five thous

and years. Each historical period is encapsulated in a timeline accessible to all. A small glimpse of our past is being presented to the public for the first time in an exhibition open from September 3rd to November 3rd 2013. The early lifestyle of people in ancient Sidon has been revived and brought back to life by a team of archaeologists showing to its full extent the richness of Lebanese heritage, culture and history. We’re back in Sidon! 🎉
The amazing support of the Honor Frost Foundation has made the 2025 excavation season possible. After two months on site, we’ve just wrapped up an incredible campaign uncovering the Late Bronze Age layers of this ancient city.

It’s hard to believe that this is our 28th year digging in Sidon, and the discoveries still take our breath away. Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing short films straight from the trenches: just a few seconds of archaeology a day to bring the past to life and show how our discoveries help shape Lebanon’s story and our shared identity for the future. 🇱🇧✨
